Welcome by the Conference Chairman

As the conference chairman, I would like to welcome you to the 6th

German Microwave Conference (GeMiC 2011) in Darmstadt.

This year GeMiC is held from March 14 to March 16, 2011, at Darmstadt’sScience and Congress Center “Darmstadtium”, close to Technische Uni-versität Darmstadt. It is organized by the Institute of Microwave Engi-neering and Photonics of Technische Universität Darmstadt, on behalfof the IMA e.V. and the VDE/ITG.

We will have a comprehensive technical program featuring 16 regulartechnical sessions and a poster session. In the tradition of last GeMiCin Berlin, the VDE/ITG Technical Committees 7.1 “Antennas” and 7.3“Microwaves” have organized two special sessions, in addition. Again, there will be two plenary sessions for opening and closing.

From a total of 115 regular paper submissions and the invited papersfor the special sessions, the Technical Program Committee selected 82papers for oral presentation, and 11 for posters. They are complementedby three invited speakers, who will give keynote talks in the plenarysessions.

Moreover, there will be several workshops and seminars during theconference, being organized by academics as well as industry. TheIndustrial Forum will complement the conference, allowing you notonly to hear the latest technical results but also to stay in touch with theleading hardware and software manufacturers. All these workshops, seminars and the Industrial Forum are open to all GeMiC attendees.

Furthermore, on Thursday, 17th March, there will be a Doctoral Schoolon Metamaterials at Technische Universität Darmstadt.

So, GeMiC is growing and taking over its role as the premier GermanMicrowave Conference.

GeMiC 2011 would not have been possible without the commitmentof many individuals and the continuous support by companies. Inparticular, we have to thank the Technical Program Committee and thePaper Review Board for carefully evaluating the manuscripts submitted, and all of our sponsors, supporting this conference.

Keynote TalkFrom Basic Research to Innovation

Thomas Becks, VDE Association for Electrical Electronic & InformationTechnologies

In today’s economy, it is clearer than ever that the key enabling technolo-gies are the most important driver of innovation and competitiveness. In Germany and Europe, research often yields excellent results. But thencomes the famous paradox: high quality knowledge is produced but itis not used or exploited sufficiently. The government pursues a range ofpolicies to set up strategic research agendas and to enhance the transferof research outcome into innovation. Starting with some basic figureson research expenditures and programmes in Germany and Europe thetalk will provide an overview of these policies and actions. Finally some“new” ideas and measures will be presented that may help giving betterresponses on the challenges.

Welcome by TU Darmstadt

Organizers: F. Sischka, D. Heckel

The workshop is divided into two parts:

1. Positioning S-parameters, harmonic measurements and X-para-meters

2. Measure and view X-parameters with the Agilent NVNA

This presentation and demo introduces how to make measurementswith a nonlinear network analyzer (NVNA). It explains the evolution ofS-parameter measurements to harmonic measurements (spectra in mag-nitude and phase) over to measuring and using X-parameters. Furtherthe application of NVNA measurements to non-linear harmonics mea-surements for device modeling (transistors, diodes) will be discussed, aswell as the usage of X-parameters for transistors and also for electroniccomponents (e. g. amplifiers, systems etc.) in simulators.
