The philosophical dispute be-tween the British mathematician Sir Roger Penrose and the Austri-an quantum physicist Anton Zeilinger, which took place on stage in the Lucerne Theatre 15 years ago at the noteworthy Bien-nial The Engima of Conscious-ness, is legendary. The hot episte-mological question at stake back then, whether there might exist a world “out there”—a world beyond human observation—remains un-decided to the present day. The origin and nature of con-sciousness—the awareness of be-ing aware—possessed perhaps by humans only, is still one of the most intriguing and complex is-sues posing a big challenge to sci-ence. It is a question—I suggest—, which can only be answered satis-factorily with the knowledge from diverse research fields by focus-sing on life and its holistic dimen-sions.
We are living in a time when mil-lions of people still believe in hor-oscopes, feng shui, fortune telling, and tarot cards. For many, a new form of “quantum spirituality”, which could just as well be attrib-uted to the presently rampant va-rieties of esoterism, has become a substitute for religion. The Bien-nial is deliberately committed to setting a counterpoint to this cheerful market of world interpre-tations and “weak thought” (Edu-ard Kaeser, NZZ, 16 May 2012), which sometimes produces rather strange effects. Top representa-tives from quantum physics, neu-roscience, philosophy, anthropo-logy, systems theory, ecology, and Buddhism as well as from the wide field of research about the ef-fects of consciousness-expanding substances are invited to Lucerne.

The philosophical dispute be-tween the British mathematician Sir Roger Penrose and the Austri-an quantum physicist Anton Zeilinger, which took place on stage in the Lucerne Theatre 15 years ago at the noteworthy Bien-nial The Engima of Conscious-ness, is legendary. The hot episte-mological question at stake back then, whether there might exist a world “out there”—a world beyond human observation—remains un-decided to the present day. The origin and nature of con-sciousness—the awareness of be-ing aware—possessed perhaps by humans only, is still one of the most intriguing and complex is-sues posing a big challenge to sci-ence. It is a question—I suggest—, which can only be answered satis-factorily with the knowledge from diverse research fields by focus-sing on life and its holistic dimen-sions.
We are living in a time when mil-lions of people still believe in hor-oscopes, feng shui, fortune telling, and tarot cards. For many, a new form of “quantum spirituality”, which could just as well be attrib-uted to the presently rampant va-rieties of esoterism, has become a substitute for religion. The Bien-nial is deliberately committed to setting a counterpoint to this cheerful market of world interpre-tations and “weak thought” (Edu-ard Kaeser, NZZ, 16 May 2012), which sometimes produces rather strange effects. Top representa-tives from quantum physics, neu-roscience, philosophy, anthropo-logy, systems theory, ecology, and Buddhism as well as from the wide field of research about the ef-fects of consciousness-expanding substances are invited to Lucerne.

The philosophical dispute be-tween the British mathematician Sir Roger Penrose and the Austri-an quantum physicist Anton Zeilinger, which took place on stage in the Lucerne Theatre 15 years ago at the noteworthy Bien-nial The Engima of Conscious-ness, is legendary. The hot episte-mological question at stake back then, whether there might exist a world “out there”—a world beyond human observation—remains un-decided to the present day. The origin and nature of con-sciousness—the awareness of be-ing aware—possessed perhaps by humans only, is still one of the most intriguing and complex is-sues posing a big challenge to sci-ence. It is a question—I suggest—, which can only be answered satis-factorily with the knowledge from diverse research fields by focus-sing on life and its holistic dimen-sions.
We are living in a time when mil-lions of people still believe in hor-oscopes, feng shui, fortune telling, and tarot cards. For many, a new form of “quantum spirituality”, which could just as well be attrib-uted to the presently rampant va-rieties of esoterism, has become a substitute for religion. The Bien-nial is deliberately committed to setting a counterpoint to this cheerful market of world interpre-tations and “weak thought” (Edu-ard Kaeser, NZZ, 16 May 2012), which sometimes produces rather strange effects. Top representa-tives from quantum physics, neu-roscience, philosophy, anthropo-logy, systems theory, ecology, and Buddhism as well as from the wide field of research about the ef-fects of consciousness-expanding substances are invited to Lucerne.
