basis of a successful professional life in the twentieth-century.
Welcome from Dr. Ahmad Alawar I am glad to see AD Poly students

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
May 18, 2014 — Abu Dhabi Polytechnic held its first nuclear
energy workshop in anticipation of graduating its first class of
nuclear power plant operators and maintenance technologists.
The Opening Plenary Session had over 200 participants.
IAT Director General Dr. Abdullatif Al Shamsi told of the
history of the nuclear program and how AD Polytechnic was
envisioned as part of the overall IAT experience. ENEC CEO HE Eng. Mohammed Al Hammadi provided keynote
remarks encouraging students to continue their hard work and enthusiasm for the nuclear industry. The workshop co-
organizer Prof. Il Soon Hwang from Seoul National University provided remarks of
appreciation for the AD Polytechnic hosts, ENEC, the Emirates Saean Engineering
Services LLC.
The Opening Plenary Session was followed by 6 technical sessions on a variety
of topics under the workshop theme of Industrial Research, Training, and Leadership
by Prof. Hwang, Dr. Anthony Hechanova, Professor Jong Hun Woo, and others. The
final theme of the workshop was industrial research with presentations by Dr. Ab-
delaziz Khlaifat Dr. Hong Kim, and Mr. Byung Sup Kim.
Salma Al Dhefari, a nuclear technology
student at AD Poly, is an Emirati legend
in chess. She has won many champion-
ships and rewards in the UAE and has
represented the country worldwide. Salma ranks high in almost every competition
she participates in. For example, in 2013, she swept first place twice in the President
Cup Chess Championship for girls under 18 in UAE. During the same year, Salma
claimed the third spot in both the UAE Chess Championship and the Arabs Chess
Championship for girls under 18 girls which was hosted in Jordan; these are just a few of her many accomplishments.
Salma recently traveled to Singapore to represent the UAE in the World Amateur Chess Championship 2014 for
women held on the 25th of April. Her passion for chess started five years ago when joined the Al Ain Chess Club to
practice more and achieve good results. Although she says that she practices most of the time alone, she believes that
her hard work and passion for chess has helped her to rise to glory. Salma is already a legend in our book.

AD Poly Focus correspondents had
a chance to speak with the former
student council president, Hamad
Al-Hanaei, on a number of topics,
including his secrets to academic
success, future career goals, and
upcoming plans for the student
council.
Can you tell us about how you chose AD Poly and decided
on your major?
Frankly, I was hesitant at first to join the Polytechnic and the
Information Security Technology major, because Abu Dhabi
Polytechnic is still in its beginning and hasn’t yet completed
its third year, but I don’t regret it now, and I don’t think I will
regret this choice.
I see that you are one of the top 5 students in your major.
What’s the secret to your success?
Firstly, thank God for this. Secondly, perhaps, the desire and
passion to study this discipline has helped me a lot to excel in
this area. Most people probably don’t know that my father is a
website developer, so I benefited greatly from him and con-
sider him as my most important influence. Also, the academic
environment, including both students and professors, moti-
vates me to do my best.
Why did you choose to run for student council president?
Because I think that I can contribute to the student council,
and I also wanted to improve myself on a personal level by
developing my interpersonal and leadership skills and enhanc-
ing my self-confidence.
What do you enjoy most about your position?
I’ve become more well-known around the campus, which has
helped me form some friendships that I am proud of.
Can you work under pressure?
Definitely. I love working under pressure because that makes
me feel the worth of every second of my life. The most im-
portant factor for success at work, though, is proper planning,
especially under pressure.
What are your goals?
Certainly, to praise Allah, which is the goal we live for as
Muslims in this land, but I have many goals, such as having
my own computer programming company and devoting my-
self to studying, researching and exploring my major field.
Any plans for the future of the student council? What is
your next step as council president?
Certainly, many plans and surprises will soon be revealed.
Hamad Al-Hanaei,
the former president of
the student council
