50 Jahre – 50 Vasen | Leitbild für modernes Design: Seit 50 Jahren steht

die Rosenthal studio-line für Innovation und Avantgarde.

Künstler und Designer wie Walter Gropius, Hans Theo Baumann,

Tapio Wirkkala, Björn Wiinblad, Jasper Morrison, Dror Benshetrit, Marcel

made in Germany.

Back to objectivity: the good form

Products with a timeless quality, cleanly designed, aest-hetically pleasing and functional – by realigning its pro-duct philosophy Rosenthal joins other companies such as Braun, AEG, Wilkhahn and Vitsoe, to become the embodiment of “the good form”. The substance of the products and the striking character of their design are the foundation upon which the corporate brand is built.International designers, architects and artists are com-missioned with the intention of developing new collections for Rosenthal. This conscious decision to engage industry outsiders to put a new spin on what have hitherto been essentially mundane objects such as plates and cups, sets Rosenthal distinctly apart from its competitors. While the origins of European product design are mainly to be found in the functionalist tradition, American design in the early 1960s is already strongly oriented to the sales-promoting aspect of beautiful products. “Ugliness doesn’t sell” is the motto taken by Raymond Loewy, founding-father of Streamlined Design and perhaps the most successful designer of all time. »Form 2000«, de-signed for Rosenthal, sells in the millions, making the range a style icon of the 1950s and 1960s.At Loewy’s studio, Philip Rosenthal meets the Finn, Tapio Wirkkala. He accepts Rosenthal’s offer to collaborate on the development of the studio-line. The vase series »Ura« (1961), »Pollo« (1970) and the »Tütenvase« (1977) document Wirkkala’s creativity.Dieter Mankau, Walter Gropius, Hans Theo Baumann, Martin Freyer, Eugen Gomringer, Cuno Fischer, Elsa Fi-scher-Treyden and Werner Schreib are just a few repre-sentative examples of Germany’s post-war architectural,

design and art scene. They all have a major impact on the Rosenthal look of the 1960s.

Inspired by nature: organic design

Curving lines and soft, sculptural shapes supersede the geometrical ideal of classical functionalism. It is first and foremost Scandinavian designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton and Alvar Aalto who understand how to translate the concept of modernism into traditional materials and organic shapes.Scandinavian design gains a foothold in Rosenthal design development, led by Tapio Wirkkala, Bjørn Wiinblad and Timo Sarpaneva. The latter’s organic designs in glass, metal, wood and ceramic are internationally acclaimed. Timo Sarpaneva designs the »Suomi« service for Rosenthal, and it remains one of the best sellers in the Rosenthal studio-line right until the present day. The »Suomi« vase (1976) strikingly expresses just how well Timo Sarpaneva is able to design and interpret shapes inspired by nature – in this case, a pebble. In 1950, Count Sigvard Bernadotte, the son of Swedish monarchs Gustav VI Adolf and Margareta, opens an industrial design firm in Copenhagen, together with the Dane Acton Bjørn. Clients include illustrious companies such as General Electric, Bang&Olufsen and Ericsson. As well as various cutlery ranges, Sigvard Bernadotte designs several series of vases for Rosenthal with different graphic reliefs, including »Poang« (1962).Bjørn Wiinblad’s designs include the »Romance« and »magic flute« services. The romantic, fairytale interpre-tation of »magic flute« is unique and is picked up again

Page 66: 50 Jahre Rosenthal studio-line - Vasen - jeroenbechtold.nljeroenbechtold.nl/artikelen/2011-rosenthal/50JS-L_Vasenleaflet_2011_LR.pdf50 years – 50 vases | A model for contemporary

in most of the objects he designs for Rosenthal. The »Romance« and »Zaubervogel« vases are representative of the many pieces that Wiinblad created for Rosenthal during a collaboration that lasted for over 40 years.

The rationality and aesthetic of geometry: precision of form

Nonconformity and pop culture prepare the ground for something really new – lifestyle consumerism. In the wake of a hitherto unseen hedonism, design brands become status symbols, while designers gain the standing of rock stars. “Design” finally enters our everyday vocabulary. Italy becomes the world’s leading design nation with companies such as Artemide, Olivetti and Cassina. Ita-lian designers primarily use the ideal of a holistic aest-hetic as their model; the traditional borders between art, architecture and design are blown asunder.Architects and artists such as Ettore Sottsass, Michele de Lucchi, Lino Sabattini, Aldo Rossi and Enzo Mari define the era of Italian design at Rosenthal. Marcello Moran-dini, an important representative of constructivist art, works for Rosenthal as both an architect and a designer. He designs façades and buildings as well as numerous objects in porcelain. Like the majority of his works, his »Arcus« vase (1983) convinces with its dynamic precision.»Cupola« by Mario Bellini is a classic and its formal language is unmistakable. The design makes reference to the rationality and aesthetic of geometry, and to inno-vation borne of reason. The slanting handle, shaped like a ribbon, does not correspond with traditional porcelain designs, but is developed out of the logic of daily use.Aldo Rossi is regarded as one of the 20th century’s most

important architects. His central tenet is to “demonst-rate the relationship between the uniqueness of form and the versatility of function”. Aldo Rossi’s work for Rosenthal includes the »Il Faro« service – inspired by the architec-ture of a lighthouse – and the »Bottiglia« vase.

Back to basics: minimalism

The art of leaving things out. Characterised by a mini-malistic simple yet elegant structure, the British design scene sets new standards, following in the tradition of “the good form”. The motto of Jasper Morrison, one of British design’s most outstanding luminaries, is that “the quality of design should be evident less from its shape than from its use”. The appeal of Morrison’s »Moon« collection for Rosenthal lies in its deliberately plain form and its soft, clean design idiom. Each piece of the service has been reduced to a minimalist shape. This purism generates tremendous persuasive power. The designs from London-based Robin Platt and Cairn Young interpret minimalism in a playful, almost sculptural way. With »Free Spirit«, »Spirit«, »Yono«, »Tectonics«, and on-board tableware for Lufthansa and »A la carte« they define Rosenthal’s design image in the 1990s. The design team achieved renown with its furniture and object design for Sawaya & Moroni and Driade. The objects designed by Jan van der Vaart (»Portica«), Tadeo Amano (»Sakura«), Maarten Vrolijk (»Florinda«), Johan van Loon (»Fun o’Fant« and »Troll«), Marcel Wanders (»Blumengerechte Vase«), Emmanuel Babled (»Baobab«), Yang (»Pacco bello«) and Ron Arad (»Rin-goletto«) demonstrate impressively the sweeping creati-ve spectrum of the Rosenthal Collection.

New kids on the block: the globalisation of design

We enter a new millennium and the world changes. De-sign increasingly serves as an identif ier of individual lifestyle or to express a personal attitude to life. The globalisation of design continues to gain ground. Designs such as »Vase of Phases« by Israeli Dror Benshedrit, »Blu Canela« by the Spanish Harry&Camilla, »Fast Vase« by France’s Cédric Ragot, »Opening« by Australian Little Wonder, »Surface« by Achim Haigis and »Struc-tures« by Stefanie Hering from Germany, »Reunion« by Pieke Bergmans from the Netherlands, and »Papyrus« by the Italian, Vittorio Passaro, provide an extensive repertoire from the current young designer scene. It is the designs of Patricia Urquiola which best express the new decade. The Spanish designer’s clients include well-known companies such as Moroso, Driade and B&B. With »Landscape«, she creates an extraordinary collec-tion of porcelain, textiles and stainless steel objects for Rosenthal. The circle closes with Christophe de la Fontaine’s new design »Format« and, at the same time, new perspecti-ves open up. Inspired by Loewy’s »Form 2000«, de la Fontaine and the Rosenthal design team create a com-plete series for the Rosenthal studio-line that is ground-breaking. The products allude to the design of the 1950s and 1960s but exaggerate it in favour of an autonomous, striking design idiom. Basic architectural shapes such as the cylinder and cone come together to produce a com-pletely new service. These young designers follow in a tradition of over 150 artists who have created milestones of formal and func-

tional quality for the Rosenthal studio-line – as evidenced by more than 350 international design awards. What they have in common, apart from individual design quality, is that they all seek new paths, both in design and by finding ways to give that design physical form.

Ritorno all‘Oggettività: “la Buona forma”

Creafacciateededificiedanchenum-

erosi oggetti in porcellana.

Riduzione all’essenziale: Minimalismo
