Youcan be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, you might notbe if you are buckled up. Alwaysfasten your safety belt, and checkthat your passengers beltsarefastened properly too.

provinces, the law says o wear safetybelts. Heres why: They work.

You never knowif youll be in a crash. If you do havea crash, you dant knowif it will be a bad one.A few crashes are very mild. In them, you wont gethurt even if yourenotbuckled up. And some crashes can e soserious, like being hit y a train, thateven buckledup a person wouldntsurvive. But most crashesare inbetween. In many of them, people whobuckle up can survive and ometimeswalk away. Withoutbelts they could bebadly hurt or k i l l e d .After 25 years of safety belts in vehicles, the facts are clear. In most crashesbuckling up does matter. . lot

Everyone in a vehicle needs protectionThat includes infants and all childrensmallerthan adult size. In fact, the lawin every state and Canadian provincesays children up to some age must erestrained while in a vehicle.

Smaller Children and BabiesSmaller childrenand babiesshould always be restrainedna childr infant restraint.heinstructions for the restraint willsay whether it is the right type andsize for your child.A very youngchild's hip bones areo small thata regular belt might nottay lowon the hips, as it should. Instead, the belt will likelye over thechild's abdomen. In a crash thebelt would apply force right on hechild's abdomen, which couldcause serious or fatal injuries. So,be sure that any child small enoughfor one is always properlyrestrained in a child or infantrestraint.

Lager Children CONI)Q: What if a child is wearing a lap-shoulder belt, but the childs sosmall that the shoulder belts veryclose to the childs face or neck?A: Move the child toward the center ofthe vehicle, but be ure that theshoulder belt still is on the childsshoulder, so that in a crash thechilds upper body would have therestraint that belts provide. If the child isso small that theshoulder belt is still very close to thechilds faceor neck, you might wantto place the child in a seat that has alap belt, if your vehicle has one.

Never do this.A Here a child s sitting in a seatthat has a lap-shoulder belt, but theshoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the beltn thisway, in a crash the child mightslide under the belt. he beltsforce would then be applied righton the childs abdomen. That couldcause seriousor fatal injuries.Wherever the child sits, the lap portionof the belt should be worn low andnulon the hips, ust touching the childsthighs. This applies belt force to thechilds pelvic bones in a crash.

Safety BeltExtenderIf the vehicles safety belt will fastenaround you, you should use t.But if a safety belt isnt long enough tofasten, your dealer will order you anextender. Its free. When you go in toorder it, take the heaviest coat you willwear, so the extender will be longenough for you. The extender will bejust for you, and just for the seat in yovehicle that you choose. Dont letsomeone else use it, and uset only forthe seat it is made to it. To wear it, justattach it to the regular safety belt.
