 AssociAtion for AcAdemic surgery • fAll 2010 N r  PRESIDEN ’S MESSAGE Dr. Daniel Albo Tis year has been one o incredible growth and expansion or the Association or Academic Surgery (AAS). In particular, the society has increased its international outreach, urther developed its Fall Courses to serve a broader population o developing surgeon scientists, and broadened the scope o the program or the  Academic Srgical Congress (ASC) to better reect the increasing percentage o academic surgeons devoted to clinical outcomes research. Tis newsle tter highli ghts the increasing inuence o the AA S in promoting the development o academic surgeons both in the United States and worldwide. One o the core pr ojects or which AA S is known is the annual Fa ll Courses – the Fndamentals o Srgical Research (FSRC) and Career Development Corses (CDC) that precede the American Colleg e o Surgeons Clinical Congress. I would like to congratulate the organizers o the Fall Courses or continuing the tradition o recruiting excellent speakers to deliver high quality talks on a wide range o topics. Dr. Steve Goldin, Past President Dr. Kevin Staveley-O’Carroll, and the Co-Chairs o the Education Committee, Drs. Kent Choi and David Foley, a h 21 Aa fsrc a h c-cha h lahp c, Drs. Faiz Bhora and Herb Zeh organized the 6th A nnal CDC. Tese society leaders’ and their committees’ hard work are directly responsible or the huge success o these courses; they should all be commended or their eorts. Te AAS is proud to announce that a book based on the FSRC will be published by Springer and edited by Past Past President Dr. Herb Chen and AAS Secretary Dr. Lillian Kao. T 15 hap bk w b a h by AAS members who previously or currently have played an active role on the AAS Executive Council. Tis book will urther establish the AAS as the premier society or developing young academic surgeons and will be distributed with the Fall Courses and international courses. For several years, the AAS has been collaborating with its international members and international surgical societies to bring these courses to other countries. In this newsletter, the Global Aairs Committee, co- chaired by Drs. Alla n sng and Carlton Barnett , highlights these international initiat ives. Te Developing a Career in Academic Srgery Corse (DCAS) in Australia and the  West Arica Corse in Nigeria are both in their third year and have received glowing eedback rom course participants. Furthermore, as detailed in this issue, a DCAS course was established in Colombia this past year with plans to expand this course to the Latin-American Federation o Srgical Societies (FELAC) in upcoming years. Courses are also in the development stage or France, Italy, India, and other countries. In addition to the Fall Courses, the AAS has exchanges with the Srgical Research Society (SRS) o  Australia, the  Yonger Fellows Association (YFA) , o the Royal Astralasian College o Srgeons (RACS), the aiwan Srgical Association (SA), and the Colombian Srgical Association (CSA) . Te  AAS representative to the SRS is the winner o the best abstract by a ull and active member submitted to the Academic Srgical Congress (ASC) a h b h Pa c. la a w, Dr. Herb Chen, will attend the SRS meeting in November o this year. Tis year’s winner is Dr. Jstin Dimick , the AAS representative to the Surgical Outcomes Club (SOC). Te YFA and SA representatives are sel- nominated and then selected by a committee comprised o the Executive Ofcers, past presidents, and the Global Aairs Committee Co-Chairs. Tis year’s representatives will be Dr. Carmen Solorzano, a newly- AAs c 2011-2013, h yfA a Dr. Andrew Hill, a member o the Global Aairs c a cha h oaz c h dcAs Aa, h tsA. la, this year’s representative to the CSA is Dr. Daniel Anaya , who is on the ASC Program Committee, having organized an outstanding course in Bogota this past July (as detailed in this newsletter). Tese outstanding individuals represent the AAS and its mission in developing the uture leaders in academic surgery around the world.  As the AAS broadens its world-wide impact, I would ask that each and every one o you welcome our international visitors at the 6th Annual ASC.
