Ladies and Gentlemen,

The food industry is a key driver of economic growth in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Numerous companies have successfully located in our state and are thriving here. The recipe for this positive development is, on the one hand, a healthy mix of well-established companies, global players, and newcomer businesses and, on the other hand, our skilled workforce and the high quality of their work. In our state – with its Baltic Sea coast and innumerable lakes – fish pro-cessing has historically been one of the most important production sec-tors. Fish are sourced from not only regional waters but also aquaculture projects. Land-based fish farming creates a solid basis for the processing and refining of fish products. Regional processing operations also profit from the additional orders. Value chains are extended.

frastructure has been developed in the field of aquaculture over the past several years that enables producers, processers, and research in-stitutes to cooperate successfully. This development work should be put on a permanent footing. For this reason, the promotion of aquaculture facilities, through both financial and organizational support, remains an explicit objective of the state government. For example, appropriate sites for recirculating aquaculture facilities have already been identi-fied, offering potential investors outstanding opportunities. The first successful projects have demonstrated that we are on the right track for developing a modern aquaculture landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a land of fishing. Inland, deep-sea, and in-shore fishing have a strong tradition here. For some time now, aquaculture (fish farming) has also been gaining importance in our state. Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine the future development of the fishing industry without this sector. There are three very important reasons for this trend: the overfishing of the oceans, the pollution generated by overseas shipping and production, and the aspects of product quality and regionality. The state government has been actively supporting and promoting aquaculture since the beginning of this millennium with the aim of developing closed and partially closed recirculating systems for fish farming on a scientific basis. Thanks to these efforts, a promising in-

viele andere Projektpartner eingebunden.

In recent years, the field of aquaculture has developed rapidly and successfully in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This development has been

fueled by experience, know-how, and tradition – as well as scientific curiosity and an innovative spirit. More and more companies and

institutes are taking advantage of the existing networks, recognizing the growth potential, and making a conscious choice for investment in our state. These projects enjoy strong support from open-minded political

and administrative stakeholders.

Sustainable fish production is becoming essential worldwideMore and more people are living on our planet. The global population is expected to increase dramatically and quickly in the coming decades. At the same time, fish and other seafood are gaining importance in human diets. Not only are these products healthier than meat – their production is more economical, effective, and environ-mentally friendly. In terms of production processes, fish requires significantly less feed, water, and energy per pound than beef, pork, or poultry. However, natural fish sources are limited, and the increasing demand for food fish cannot be met through the traditional methods of carp and trout farming. By the year 2030, roughly 50 percent of the global demand for fish will have to be met through aquaculture.

Recirculating systems offer new solutionsUntil now, many aquaculture systems have been plagued with difficulties. Owing to high energy consumption and the use of antibiot-ics and chemicals, the sector has rarely been associated with sustainability. Closed recir-culating systems can solve the problems of conventional fish farming: they are resistant to weather conditions, it’s possible to gener-ate heat and power biologically, and tem-peratures can be controlled better than in nature. Through water treatment and reuse, no more than 20 percent of the total volume must be replaced with fresh water daily. Furthermore, no antibiotics are required. In Germany, the state of Mecklenburg-Vor-pommern has assumed the leading role for biogas-fueled recirculating systems. To date, these highly successful systems have mainly been used for the production of African cat-fish. But soon, the production quantities of shrimp, noble crayfish, maraena whitefish,

and other native fish species will drastically increase after the first intensive phases of de-velopment.

A land and its traditionWith sustainable aquaculture, we in Mecklen-burg-Vorpommern have been demonstrating for many years that ecology and economy don’t have to be at odds with one another. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the most water-rich state in Germany – fishing has a long tradition here. Aquaculture has been prac-ticed for centuries in the form of carp and trout farming in ponds. Today, tranquility, experience, and tradition combine with the innovative research and development work that is being undertaken by brilliant minds in the state’s numerous companies and research institutes, as well as their committed project partners. Furthermore, the largely rural state offers abundant space for experimentation and the implementation of innovative ideas.

Currently, there is a strong focus on exploring the possibilities offered by the combined cul-ture of fish and crops in closed recirculating systems – aquaponics.

A merging of theory and practiceNumerous small and large research facilities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have dedicated themselves to sustainable aquaculture. The projects are manifold and always have a prac-tical orientation. Topics of study and testing include the living conditions and biological cycles of the animals, processing techniques, and the quality of the final products. Facili-ties also work on the development of technical systems, the assessment of economic viability, and the clarification of legal issues. In this R&D work, the authorities, researchers, and companies work hand in hand, maximizing efficiency. Besides cooperating with renowned research institutes, numerous other project partners across the country are being in-

Successful investment projects and well-established networksOur state is home to a wide range of aquacul-ture companies. Be it freshwater or seawater systems, fish or shellfish, native or exotic species, breeding, fattening, or processing: specialists are at work here. One focus is on recirculation technologies that combine eco-nomic and environmental objectives. Here, not only common, but also new fish species should be established. In our state, investors enjoy strong support from political and ad-ministrative stakeholders, who are open to new ideas, make fast decisions due to short lines of communication, and clear the way for appropriate financial support. The state government has set itself the task of actively

supporting investors and subsidizing invest-ment projects involving the farming, process-ing, and marketing of aquatic organisms. The first recirculating facilities have reached maturity, and numerous new investors are already waiting in the wings.

This brochure was created as a joint project between Rostock Business and Invest in MV to provide companies and investors with information about Mecklenburg-Vorpommern‘s competencies in the field of aquaculture.

Many roads lead to RostockProfessorPalmishappytobedoingresearch, teaching, and living in Mecklenburg-Vor-pommern. Already as a young boy in the Ger-man state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, his dream was to become a marine biologist. His love of water was a strong motivating factor in his choice of study and all career decisions that followed. The marine scientist led many ex-citing projects worldwide until coming to the beautiful state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2010 to accept a position as Chair of Aqua-culture and Sea-Ranching at the University of Rostock. Here,Palmhasthechancetopursuehis passion – the education of young scien-tists.

Research and developmentThe interdisciplinary working group for aqua-cultureandsea-ranchingledbyPalmismadeup of biologists and scientists from various disciplines. The research work falls into three main areas. The first of these is the expansion and development of sustainable and environ-mentally friendly aquaculture systems. The

second area is the use of biological indicator organisms for detecting short- and long-term changes in aquatic ecosystems. And the third focuses on the diagnosis of fish diseases and parasites. Palm’s favorite project is the fishgreenhouse, where intensive research is being conducted in the field of aquaponics.

Applied scienceNot only does the working group conduct research – its findings are also reflected in its products and services. These include the planning and setup of aquaculture facilities, recirculating technologies, and aquaponics projects, nutrient accounting and nutrient analysis, the use of bioindicators for assess-ing environmental impacts, the diagnosis of diseases and parasitic infections, and legal advice for all types of aquaculture projects.

Passion for the coast Carsten Kühn is not a man of many words. He’s a doer, driven by the vision of a regional and environmentally sound system of aqua-culture. Originally from the state of Branden-burg, Kühn remained in the north after fini-shing his studies at the University of Rostock – he values the wide, open spaces and the op-portunities that can be found here in his field. As Director of the Institute for Fisheries of the State Research Centre for Agriculture and Fishery in Rostock, the biologist is responsible for numerous innovative projects.

For sustainable aquacultureA key focus of the Institute is research on the design of environmentally friendly and economically competitive systems of aqua-culture. This work deals with fish farming as well as technological process optimization in fresh and brackish water. The main priori-ties are the development of closed recircula-tion technologies and the establishment of new native species, such as pikeperch and maraena whitefish, in aquaculture. In 2011,

an experimental and laboratory facility for pikeperch farming – the only pilot project of its kind in Europe – was put into operation in Hohen Wangelin. Here, the entire life cycle of the pikeperch is being researched and tested in a commercial-scale aquaculture system. Starting in 2015, the Hohen Wangelin facility plans to produce a total of 40 metric tons of pikeperch per year.

Practical orientationThe results of the research and technical- development work do not remain behind closed doors, but instead are applied state-wide. The Institute cooperates with almost all large inland fisheries in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. On a regular basis, Kühn visits his project partners, observes current develop-ments, takes samples, assists in the spawning, or shares experience. The Institute’s partners, which include the maraena whitefish facility managed by the BIMES fishery in Frauen-mark and the companies Fischerei Müritz-PlauGmbHandForellenzuchtUhthoffGmbHin Neubrandenburg, value the cooperation.

Visionen nachgehenDr.

I’m proud of being able to pursue the vision of a fully contained

recirculating system. Here in the state, we have not only the space, but also the full support of political and administrative stakeholders.”

Thinking things through from start to finishMaking visions realityDr. Günther Scheibe has always been a visionary. His dream of a perfectrecirculatingsystemgainedmomentumwhenPALAnlagenbauwas founded in 1992 as a technical supplier for agriculture. Scheibe’s holistic approach and the search for energy-efficient solutions soon brought him and his colleagues to the question of how the waste heat generated in agriculture could be used effectively. He also observed the increasing fish consumption and, at the same time, the depletion of natural fish stocks. So why not bring the fish onto land?

The big picturePAL Anlagenbau networked with and gathered information fromother projects throughout Europe. Since its construction of a warm-water recirculating system for the production of African catfish in a section of the facility, PAL has emerged as a genuine expert in thefield of aquaculture. Working together with partners and research facilities, the company is constantly developing. PAL is no longerjust an equipment manufacturer, but also a systems developer and

producer active in the cooperatives “Fischgut Nord” and “Fischgut Mitte”. Currently, eight producers with three slaughterhouses have joined together for improving efficiency in the marketing of African catfish. In the beginning, juvenile fish were purchased and grown out in Abtshagen. Since 2013, however, the company has been breeding its own juvenile fish for member companies in the fish farm it founded in Abtshagen.

Models for the futureRecently,PALAnlagenbauwaschosenfromalargepoolofapplicantstoparticipateinaworldwideaquaponicsproject.Projectpartnerswillbe looking into ways of combining the farming of fish (aquaculture) with soilless plant culture (hydroponics) using a closed system for recycling water and nutrients. For Dr. Günther Scheibe, such systems are not only logical, but also promising for the future.

Wir freuen uns auf die Zukunft!““Here, there’s plenty of land and a whole lot of ideas. We chose Mecklen-

Healthy circulation Discovering fish farming by chanceThePommerehnefarminLüchowisrunbythreededicatedbrothers. For a long time, their business was pig farming. Now, they are part of a cooperative focused on the production, processing, and sale of African catfish.Actually, thePommerehnebrothershadsimplybeenlookingfor a way to effectively use the waste heat generated by their farm’s biogas plant.

Uncomplicated productionBioenergie Lüchow GmbH & Co. KG became one of the first companies in the state to farm African catfish in a recirculating system. The Pommerehne brothers were mainly convinced by the fact that the production of this fish is relatively uncomplicated and requires mini-mal engineering. All that is needed is heat, a building, water, and a recirculatingsystem, whichwasprovidedbyPALAnlagenbauGmbH.Furthermore, the fully automated feeding process places minimal de-mands on staff. That pays off.

It’s all interlinkedOn the farm, there is a biogas plant that produces enough electricity to cover the needs of the entire facility. Any excess electricity is fed into the public power grid. Waste heat from the combustion process is used for heating the buildings, and the fish tanks use water from a well. Wastewater from the fish farm is collected in storage tanks and then irrigated onto the family’s fields during dry periods. Even the processing takes place on site. The cooling of the respective building is achieved in part through a heat exchanger of the biogas plant. The fish-processing byproducts are used as feed for pigs. A large network, abundant available land, and the active support of the authorities: for thePommerehnebrothers, there isnoquestion that thedecision forMecklenburg-Vorpommern was the beginning of a success story.

auf der man Innovatives aufbauen kann.“ “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has always been a land of fishing – here, we have the experience and the tradition. They are the foundation on which

innovative solutions can be developed.”

Der Deutsche eDelkrebs kehrt zurÜckTHE NOBLE CRAYFISH MAKES A COMEBACK

befallenen gewässern deutschlandweit wieder angesiedelt. in Mecklenburg-Vorpom-

The noble crayfish has been virtually eradicated by the crayfish plague and is therefore

included on the Red List of threatened species published by the German Federal Agency for

Nature Conservation. Today, it is being reintroduced in plague-free waters across Germany.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the species has been successfully bred in captivity in recircu-

lating systems and pond facilities since 2005. In Friedrichsruhe, they are being farmed in a

recirculating system with maraena whitefish.

Sustainability, well worth it Preserving the old, creating the newGuido Thies is a fisherman through and through. This passion is in his blood – as the eleventh generation of his family to run the fishery. But he wants to do more than simply preserve old traditions. Using intensive research and development work, he is paving the way in his company for a modern system of aquaculture that can run without antibiotics or other drugs. In addition to the conventional manage-ment of 60 lakes, rivers, and four pond facilities throughout Meck-lenburg-Vorpommern, Thies is pressing ahead with two exceptional projects in Friedrichsruhe.

In the interests of natureThe maraena whitefish is a large, flavorful species of whitefish whose distribution today in Germany has been severely reduced in spite of extensive conservation efforts. Since 2008, BIMES GmbH has dedi-cated itself to the farming of this practically forgotten fish. Because the practice of harvesting broodfish from the wild is costly, only possible during certain times of year, and detrimental to wild stocks, the farm

has to build up a broodstock of its own that is large enough to make the production process independent of wild reproduction. The project covers the entire breeding cycle, from spawning conditions and brood care to processing options. In this context, feed tests and the fish’s mode of life are taken into consideration. For this work, Guido Thies could spend day and night at his fishponds. He enjoys scientific – and equally passionate – support from the Institute for Fisheries of the State Research Centre in Rostock.

Sensible recirculating systemsThe BIMES facility is fed with clean well water, which is what makes it so unique. Every pond has its own well. In order to reap the full benefits of this system, 40 ponds for noble crayfish are being built behind the fishponds. The nutrient-rich water from the whitefish ponds benefits the crayfish, which, at the same time, filter and clean the water. Begin-ning in 2015/16, BIMES GmbH plans to produce large quantities of noble crayfish on an ongoing basis.

realisieren können, ist beispielhaft für die gesamte Aquakultur.““We made a conscious decision for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – and this started us on the right track. The achievements we are able to make here

are exemplary in the field of aquaculture.”

Vision of producing absolutely pure foodA love for natural products York Dyckerhoff loves nature, fresh fish, and seafood. The thought of shrimp that have been raised in healthy recirculating systems without antibiotics or other drugs fills him with delight. With this vision, he and his partner, Gerrit Quantz, are running – and continuously de-veloping – the company Green Aqua Farming. And as a result, they have become experts for land-based aquaculture in closed recirculat-ing systems.

Extensive know-howThe knowledge comes from more than 25 years of experience in com-mercial saltwater fish production. This experience ranges from prac-tical work in recirculation farms to marketing and the development, planning, and installation of various components and complete sys-tems – worldwide. The company has customers from both the public and private sectors. Even leading institutes take advantage of the experience and competence of Green Aqua Farming. The company is currently planning pilot aquaculture facilities for the new buildings

of the Thünen Institute in Bremerhaven and the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Marine Biotechnology in Lübeck. It also planned and supervisedtheconstructionofafiltrationsystemfortheMaxPlanckInstituteforEvolutionaryBiologyinPlön.

Deliberate choice for Mecklenburg-VorpommernDyckerhoff made a conscious decision for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as the location for their company. His experience: in no other region is the support from political and administrative stakeholders for the field of aquaculture as strong as it is here. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, he found an openness for new ideas, a sense of cooperation, and fast decisions. He sees the good funding conditions as the icing on the cake. TheordersituationofGreenAquaFarmingcouldn’tbebetter.Planning, implementation, and feasibility studies for sustainable aquaculture systems for German and international customers fill the order books.

Frische shrimPs aus mecklenburg / FRESH SHRIMP FROM MECKLENBURG

co2-bilanz aufweisen.

Currently, Green Aqua Farming is building a facility for its own subsidiary. The Garnelen-Farm

Grevesmühlen is Dyckerhoff’s pet project. Here, the company plans to produce shrimp that

are absolutely fresh and, thanks to the closed recirculating system, require neither antibiotics

nor other additives. Owing to the short sales channels, the shrimp also have a low carbon

footprint.
