RWTH Aachen University - An excellent choice

TRADITION THE BASIS OF EXCELLENCERWTH Aachen University was founded in 1870 with considerable support from localcompanies. Originally a polytechnical institute, it subsequently became the Rheinisch-Westflische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH), i.e., the North-Rhine-WestphalianInstitute of Technology, in 1900.

    THE PRESENT INTERNATIONAL EXPERTISE

Today, RWTH Aachen University is one of the most renowned Technical Universities inEurope. The University maintains an academic staff of more than 2.400, with 420 full-timeprofessors.RWTH Aachen Universitys long-standing reputation for research and educational distinctionattracts students from all over the world: Out of a total of more than 35.000 students over5.000 come from 130 different countries.

    PARTNERSHIPS SHARING INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY

Close cooperation in research and development between Engineering and Natural Sciencesand numerous important companies contribute decisively to the RWTH Aachen Universitys

competitiveness at a national and international level. The settlement of international research institutions such as Microsoft, Ford, UnitedTechnologies and Philips as well as a large number of start-up companies in the Aachenregion proves the universitys strength in innovation.

TEN GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE RWTH AACHEN UNIVERSITY

Academic excellence1.Long-standing tradition in Engineering, IT and the Natural Sciences2.Interdisciplinary research with external partners3.

    Close cooperation with international companies4. Research-oriented education5.State-of-the-art facilities6.International atmosphere and cooperation7.Outstanding prospects for employment8.Cultural diversity9.A supportive and stimulating environment10.

IS RWTH AACHEN UNIVERSITY THE RIGHT UNIVERSITY FOR ME?

RWTH Aachen University is an Excellence University in the German educational system andone of the leading technical universities in the world. We offer a world-class education that

enables you to start a successful academic or professional career. Many of our internationalalumni now hold top positions in business, politics, administration and academia. In return we expect our students to have shown outstanding performance in their past studies(Bachelors degree studies as well as secondary education) and dedication to their eldof study. Furthermore, you should be willing to integrate and become an active part in theuniversity community, to learn German and to take part in university activities (starting withthe orientation workshop, BeBuddy-programme, etc.).

The German system of university education is quite different from the Anglo-American system. You are expected to be much more self-reliant. You need to organize your studies yourselfand should show a willingness to make informed decisions for yourself. It is much harderin Germany to gain access to professors and lecturers than in, e.g., the U.S. Professors inGermany have to supervise more students than in the Anglo-American educational system. If you are a self-reliant person, this offers you the chance to follow your own path into theworld of research. This system, however, is not suitable for those individuals who expect tobe guided through every aspect of their student life.

In short, what we expect of our future students is: dedication to your studies, extraordinaryintellectual abilities, a high degree of self-reliance, assertiveness, willingness to become partof the RWTH Aachen University community and the willingness to learn German.

Application for a Bachelor`s degree programme at RWTH

Important:This information leaet is intended exclusively for applicants who would like to join a Bachelorsdegree programme and who are not nationals of Germany or who have not obtained therequalifying degree in Germany! If you received your school degree in Germany, you are considered to be a Bildungsinlnder. In this case, you must apply at the Registrars Ofce of RWTH Aachen University

(Studierendensekretariat). Please inquire at the Registrars Ofce for more information on

the application process. If you are a German citizen even if you have received a school degree in a foreign country

you have to apply at the Registrar s Ofce.

    1. STEP: GATHER INFORMATION

The rst step in your application should be to make up your mind what subject you would

like to study. RWTH Aachen University offers help in the process of nding the right eld

of study. In fact, we expect all of our Bachelors degree students to take part in an onlineself-assessment. It is mandatory that proof of taking part is submitted together with the otherrequired application documents. The self-assessment is a questionaire that you answeronline. At the end you receive a recommendation which eld of study suits the interests that

you entered in the online questionaire. The result of the self-assessment is only known to you.The university is not informed on the outcome. The online self-assessment can be found at:http://www.rwth-aachen.de/cms/main/root/~eft/?lidx=1A list of all study programmes offered by RWTH Aachen University you nd at:

http://www.rwth-aachen.de/cms/main/root/~yev/?lidx=1If a study programme interests you, you should read the detailed information pages.Additionally, you may want to contact the study coordinator or advisor. They can give youdetailed information about content of your studies, organization of the programme and career

prospects. The list of advisors can be found at: http://www.rwth-aachen.de/cms/root/~tmy/?lidx=1

Please also refer to the webpage of the International Ofce of RWTH Aachen University

where you will nd up-to-date information about the application process.

Freely accessible vs. restricted study programmes

When browsing the list of study programmes you will nd that some are freely accessible while

others are called restricted. Restricted study programmes are those where considerably

more applications are submitted each year than places of study can be offered. A typicalexample is human medicine. We can only offer about 200 places of study each year, butreceive more than ten times the number of applications. Restricted subjects receive an

    8/20

    8

exclusion grade (called numerous clausus). Only the applicants with the best grades havea chance to enter these programmes. In the list of subjects you need to look under the column

Bewerbung 1. Fachsem. If you nd the entry RWTH-NC or ZVS-NC, then the study

programme is access restricted. In freely accessible study programmes all persons who are found to be qualied receive

a place of study. Please note that a major difference from the point of view of an applicant

is this: In restricted programmes you cannot receive a conditional admission or an earlyadmission! Furthermore, you must submit all required documents before the deadline! Youmay not submit, e.g., a language test result at a later time!

Hochschulzugangsberechtigung - eligibility to enter a study programme in Germany
