tage.

The Zurich International Saxfest will be held in the Toni-Areal Campus, a unique artistic space and the new residence of the Zurich University of the Arts. From 3rd to 5th of March 2017, the Toni-Areal Campus will host a great number of concerts, con-ferences, expositions, performances and master-classes. The three-day celebration of the saxophone is an exquisite opportunity of creating a dialogue between the public, students, professors, prominent performers, as well as educators from all over the world, such as Frederick L. Hemke, Nikita Zimin, Rolf-Erik Nystrøm and Iwan Roth, all reflecting different schools, approaches and generations in the evolution of the instrument. Through round tables, public lectures or more casual meetings, all will be able to find their way to participate in this effervescent event. In honor of the occasion, the musical program is wide and diverse, therefore accessible and capti-vating for a large spectrum of audiences, ranging from professional musicians, knowledgeable music lovers, families and more. The festival will be featuring saxophone students from the Swiss music Universities (Zurich, Luzern, Basel, Lausanne, Lugano, Bern, Geneva), as well as students from the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität Wien. The festival also presents various renowned en-sembles with alumni from Swiss and Austrian music universities, such as Ensemble Nikel, Too Hot to Hoot?, Trio Saeitenwind and Five Sax. This weekend will also include the Swiss Saxophone Days, a cooperation between the different Music Universities in Switzerland. Throughout the Festival, professors of the Swiss music universities and guest artists will offer public lessons (Sascha Armbruster (Luzern), Raphael Camenisch (Lugano), Beat Hofstetter (Luzern), Lars Mlekusch (Zurich / Vienna), Marcus Weiss (Basel) as well as Harry White (Zurich) and Michael Krenn (Innsbruck/Vienna). This intense festival will also allow the audience to rediscover a vast repertoire; from Igor Stravinsky

to Paul Dukas, from Dimitri Shostakovich to Fran-cisco Guerrero, from William Albright to Camille St-Saëns, with particular regard to contemporary Swiss composers. Another highlight of the Festival will be the American saxophone school, r epresented by the renowned saxophonist and educator Frederick L. Hemke. An exceptional performance- representation of Salvatore Sciarrino’s monumental piece «La Bocca, I Piedi, Il Suono», for 4 soloists and 100 moving saxophonists, followed by world pre-mieres of works for saxophone ensemble (Gérard Pape, Junghae Lee), will all be part of this enriching musical experience.

SAX VOYAGEFIVE SAX 22:00 –22:45, Kaskadenhalle

Five Sax invites you to join them on an unforgettable musical journey. The multi-continental trip begins in the legendary capital of music: Vienna, with a look back at some timeless classics of the past. Then we jump on a train to explore the rich ethnic musical styles of Spain, Italy, Hungary and the Balkans. From there we hop on a flight to Rio de Janeiro to experience the seductive rhythms of Brazilian Bossa Nova, the passion of Argentine Tango and a visit to the mythic Columbian town of Macondo. For the last stop of our voyage, we touch down in sunny Los Angeles where we rediscover some of the most famous Hollywood hits.

ARTISTIC RESEARCHORIENTATION TONI-AREAL SAXOPHONE AND ELECTRONICS 14:00 –15:00, Konzertsaal 1

Presentation SABREPresenter: Matthias Müller

Working with electronics is an enriching and fascinating challenge for performers. As instrumen-talists we do not want to give up the quality of our instruments, and we want to work with electronics as freely as we do with human partners. This is what motivated clarinetist and composer Matthias Mueller, professor at the ZhdK, to initiate the SABRE research project together with his team from the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation in 2008. After nearly 10 years of conception, development and artistic experimentation, the first product is now coming to market: the SABRE Multi Sensor (SMS). This sensor can be easily attached to any saxophone or clarinet and comes with its own powerful software, designed for use by non- specialists. The SMS enables a new artistic way of realizing the coordination between performer and electronics. With his instrument the performer can control not only electronic music, but also light, visuals, video and video games. The SMS is avail-able worldwide online beginning in February 2017. More: www.sabremultisensor.com.

Extending the Saxophone via Live ElectronicsPresenter: Joel Diegert

As modern computers have becoming increasingly powerful, digital processing has become an integral part of most music production in virtually every genre. The crucial capability to process streams of audio in real time is now available to anyone with a laptop or smartphone, opening the door to new modes of performance, improvisation and compo sition. This research project investigates the inter section of acoustic instrumental performance and digital sound manipulation. In this presentation we will take a look at the idea of the «extended instrument». What does it mean to «extend» an instrument, and how could we go about designing one? The interest in this kind of hybridization has been present since the early days of electronic music, but the goal of a truly extended instrument has proven to be elusive. American saxophonist Joel Diegert has won prizes at several major international competitions and has performed at prestigious venues and festivals around the world. He is dedicated to the develop-ment and promotion of contemporary music, having premiered countless works in collaboration with modern composers. Joel is currently a doctoral student at the Kunstuniversität Graz, where he is researching the topic Extending the Saxophone via Live Electronics with the support of a KUG doctoral stipend.

SASCHA ARMBRUSTERSAXOPHONESascha Armbruster was born in Lahr/Schwarzwald (Germany) in 1974. First he studied saxophone in Basel with Iwan Roth and Marcus Weiss. After the «Premier prix à l‘ Unanimité» at the Conservatoire de Paris with Claude Delangle, he specialized in contemporary music and its borders. Concert- activities as soloist and with chamber groups brought him to famous festivals for example in Japan, the US and all over Europe. He performed with leading ensembles for contemporary music as the «Ensemble Modern», the «Ensemble Recher-che» and the «Klangforum Wien». As member and founder of the ARTE Quartett (Basel) he worked with musicians like Tim Berne, Marc Ducret, Pierre Favre, Fred Frith, Urs Leimgruber and Terry Riley. Since winterterm 2001 he has been working as a tutor at the Conservatory of Lucerne.

RAPHAEL CAMENISCHSAXOPHONERaphael Camenisch was born in Zurich. He started his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Zurich while still attending high school in the class of Marcus Weiss, and continued under Jean-Georges Koerper to graduate with distinction in 2000. Further influence came from masterclasses with Ivan Roth, Jean-Michel Goury and Kyle Horch. He has won various competitions and was soloist in Zurich‘s Tonhalle as part of the Orpheum concerts.Raphael Camenisch brings his passion as a chamber musician to various formations, be it with piano, with saxophone quartet, with the Trio Trafique or with audio designer Holger Stenschke, his versati-lity being essential in each case. The members converged in Vienna from around the world, united by a modern conception of virtuosity and the constant urge to push the limits of performance. The five musicians from Poland, Italy, Hong Kong, the USA and Chile each brings his own unique and vibrant personality to the group. The ensembles imaginative programming mirrors the diversity of its members; rooted in classical music, while venturing into American jazz, South-American Latin styles and European folk music. The ensemble began in an unusual way: performing street theater in the centre of Vienna. Their first year performing together was an unforgettable ex perience of running from the police, surviving freezing temperatures and dealing with angry shopkeepers. The ensembles past is echoed in their concerts by their use of theatrical elements, their strong connection with the audience, and their spon-taneous approach to making music.

JUNGHAE LEECOMPOSERJunghae Lee was born in Tokyo in 1964 and is a Korean citizen. She studied composition with Byung-Dong Paik at Seoul National University and later took part in masterclasses with Isang Yun and Toru Takemitsu. In 1991 she moved to Basel, where she studied electronic music and harpsichord at the Musik-Akademie Basel. A series of tape pieces reflects her search for strong and clear means of expression and led to their own idiom. After a phase of intensive activity in electro-acoustic music, she has once again turned her interest to instrumental composition. Special sounds and high expressivity characterize her work, both with and without electronic elements.Since 2010 she is realizing projects revolving around her interest for musical ressources in Korea.KYOL (PASSING MOMENTS) (2017)The Korean word «kyol» has several different meanings: Primarily it means «texture»,»grain» and «wave». But also it has some meanings in relati-on with time. In this case, it means «short while», «passing moments» or «time-event by chance». This kind of time concept represented by a single syllabic word «kyol» seems to me somehow related with a personal perception of each individuals. This piece is the continuation of a series of my work in the last years titled by «sorimuni(Klang-Sinn-bilder)» in which I research the relation between sound materials and sound images. The transfor-mations of sound materials and the organization of time elements are required in this working process.Experimenting the idea about «passing moment», I

set the spirit of «animato» as the main energy of the piece «kyol». Here, the energy is captured in «pas-sing moments» which are moving in the time space through the projection, concentration and diffusion.

ENSEMBLE NIKELA quartet consisting of saxophone, electric guitar, percussion and piano. These instruments, mostly evolving in the 20th century were joined together to form a new chamber music output where electric and acoustic sounds are to be melted into a unified organism bridging between, not only different sources of mechanical waves, but also aesthetic prejudice and dichotomies of musical genres. In its quest of exploring its audio spectral artistic possibilities, the group has been presenting an ongoing subscribers series in Tel Aviv & amp; Haifa, Initiating conceptual projects with changing part-ners, soloists or ensembles and above all collabo-rate with composers in developing new repertoire. Among the composers who wrote for the ensemble one can find Raphaël Cendo, Chaya Czernowin, Clemens Gadenstaetter, Philippe Hurel, Eduardo Moguillansky, Marco Momi, Helmut Oehring, Stefan Prins, Jose Maria Sanchez Verdu and Michael Wert-müller to name a few.Founded in 2006 by Yaron Deutsch and Gan Lev, the ensemble became a frequent guest in honorable festivals such as Wien Modern, Donauecshinger Musiktage, Ultraschall (Berlin), Bang on a Can (New York), International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt, ArsMusica (Brussels) Klangspuren

ROLF-ERIK NYSTRØMSAXOPHONENorwegian saxophonist born in 1975. Nominated the Nordic Council Music Prize 2011 (previous nominees are a.o.Bjørk, Kaija Saariaho, Esa Pekka Salonen,Jan Garbarek & Christian Lindberg). About Nystrøm the jury writes:Rolf-Erik Nystrøm, despite his young age, is one of Norway’s most award-winning and Internationally active musicians. His unique technical talent gives him a timbre control that blows most people’s notions of what is possible on a saxophone, to a degree that makes the saxophone as an instrument almost subordinate to his personal expression. Nystrøm’s range spans from being a soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and a number of other Nordic and International ensembles, to receiving specially written music from composers such as Luca Francesconi and Richard Barrett, to name a few. In addition, he co-operates with leading performers in various folk music (Senegal, South- Africa, Tadjikistan, Egypt, Brazil, Ivory Coast, China, Norway, Sri Lanka) and tours the world with them.He also signs his own improvisation-based compo-

sitions. Far from being a superficial cross-over artist, on the contrary, he makes his mark by an unusual ability to orient himself in new musical situations; to be ‚in the style‘ and contribute with a personal, pioneering expression.

GERARD PAPECOMPOSERAmerican composer, born in New York City in 1955, has lived in France since 1991. He studied compo-sition privately with George Cacioppo and William Albright and electronic music with George Wilson at the University of Michigan. He has composed more than 80 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, vocal and instrumental soloists, and electroacoustic works. His works have been played throughout the world, including renown performers of Arditti String Quartet, Voxnova, Ensemble 2e2m, Paul Mefano, Nicholas Isherwood, Erik Drescher, Irvine Arditti, Rohan de Saram, Maurizio Barbetti, Daniel Kientzy, Cécile Daroux, Roland Auzet, Neue Vocalsolisten, Orchestre Nationale de Lille (conducted by Jean Claude Casadesus), the Orchestre des Flûtes Françaises, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Risto Joost) and the Ensemble U.Formerly director of the Ateliers UPIC/CCMIX from 1991 to 2007, Gerard Pape founded the C.L.S.I. («Cercle pour la Liberation du Son et de l‘Image»), an ensemble consisting of 8 performers playing instruments and computers «live» in 2007. In 2010, Pape founded along with his wife, the Russian composer, Olga Krashenko, the D.L.S.I., a duo where each composer participates in the performance of the other‘s works. Two recent CDs of his music came out in 2015 on Stradivarius and Mode Records. A bi-lingual book of Pape’s texts as well as musicological texts about his work, «MUSIPOESCI», was published in 2015 by Editions Michel de Maule in Paris.

His most recent musical compositions, includes HARMONIES OF FORM AND TIME for six solo-ists and six orchestras, premiered in March, 2012 and HARMONIES OF TIME AND TIMBRE for flute, 8 strings and 8 channel tape premiered in Janu-ary, 2012 as well as the opera «WHY POETS ?» premiered in May, 2014 in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was recently commissioned by the Sonar Quartet (Berlin) with funds provided by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation to write his 4th String Quartet «TEXTURES TURBULENTES ET FORMES EMERGENTES». Its world premiere was performed in Berlin December 11th, 2016.«VERS LA LUMIÈRE» (2017)This work is for soprano voice, glissando flute and an ensemble of 15 saxophones. The form is in 4 parts:1) Pulsating vibratos (Hommage to Scelsi)2) Spectral canon (Hommage to Tenney and Nancarrow)3) Climbing spectral mountains (Hommage to Daumal)4) Mnemosyne (Hommage to Holderlin )Sometimes being an artist, a creator, means having to descend into an abyss, a kind of Hell. If the artist manages to climb back alive out of his dark pit, he may even be capable thereafter of climbing high mountains, ones that may or may not exist, materially speaking, for others (ie Rene Daumal‘s great novel «Mount Analog»). In this case, climbing such heights represents a voyage towards the Light.Poets such as Holderlin and Rene Daumal have described the lows and the highs of poetical experience. Composers such as Scelsi, Nancarrow and Tenney have translated such arduous spiritual journeys into ecstatic sound. As for me, this new work represents another musical attempt to scale the seemingly impossible sonorous heights of time, timbre, harmony and polyphony.

Too Hot To Hoot?

TOO HOT TO HOOT?CHAMBER PERFORMING QUARTETToo hot to hoot? is a swiss new music quartet with harpist Estelle Costanzo, accordionist Sofia Ahjoniemi, saxophonist Kevin Juillerat and per-cussionist Julien Mégroz. As the palindrome which forms its name, symmetry is omnipresent in the

four-instrument characteristics: two percussive instruments (harp and percussion) and two wind instruments (accordion and saxophone); two harmonic instruments (accordion and harp) and two melodic instruments (saxophone and percussion)…Since timbre and sound quality are crucial in the music of today, that allows to create a lot of original and subtle sound colours and combinations. Its repertoire is made of free instrumentation pieces, arrangements and premieres. It explores the boundaries between classical and popular music and between different eras. The quartet also pays attention to the form of its concerts which are built as actual performances: e.g. by staging the musicians or by including extra-musi-cal elements. The quartet Too hot to hoot? has performed all over Switzerland and in Europe. It has been invited to Société de Musique Contemporaine Lausanne (SMC), H95, Raum für Kultur Basel, Concerts de Musique Contemporaine (les CMC) in Chaux-de-Fonds, to Théâtre de l’Oriental Vevey and to Ren-contres Musicales d’Evian in 2016.
