Chris Duncan / USA · Sculpture + Painting
I’m a sculptor and professor of visual arts at Union College in upstate New York. Born in New York City, studied literature and art in Maine and New York, worked for other artists in New York and London, maintained studios in Brooklyn and Maine for years before moving out of the city to take a teaching job in the late 1980’s.In sculpture, I work in steel, other metals, plaster, wood. I also make a lot of drawings and collages, often large pieces in ink, acrylic, and cut paper. The sculptures and drawings are abstract. I’m looking for structure and expressiveness in both form and material, and I like a kind of tension between the raw and the cooked. Materials and processes set certain limits; within these I respond to the way a particular work looks and feels; qualities of gravity, balance, and surface that make sense visually, physically, emotionally.
Recent and upcoming exhibitions include the State University of New York at Delhi;National Academy Museum, NY, NY; Allan Stone Gallery at Art Basel/Miami;RICO, Brooklyn, NY; Kirkland Art Center, Clinton, NY and the Cherry Valley SculptureTrail, Cherry Valley, NY.
