Double Sin

I had called in at my friend Poirots rooms to findhim sadly overworked. So much had he becomethe rage that every rich woman who had mislaida bracelet or lost a pet kitten rushed to secure theservices of the great Hercule Poirot. My little friendwas a strange mixture of Flemish thrift andartistic fervor. He accepted many cases in whichhe had little interest owing to the first instinctbeing predominant.

He also undertook cases in which there was a littleor no monetary reward sheerly because the probleminvolved interested him. The result was that, as I say,he was overworking himself. He admitted as muchhimself, and I found little difficulty in persuadinghim to accompany me for a weeks holiday to thatwell-known South Coast resort, Ebermouth.

We had spent four very agreeable days whenPoirot came to me, an open letter in his hand.

Mon ami, you remember my friend JosephAarons, the theatrical agent?

I assented after a moments thought. Poirotsfriends are so many and so varied, and range fromdustmen to dukes.

Eh bien, Hastings, Joseph Aarons finds himselfat Charlock Bay. He is far from well, and there isa little affair that it seems is worrying him. Hebegs me to go over and see him. I think, mon ami,that I must accede to his request. He is a faithfulfriend, the good Joseph Aarons, and has done muchto assist me in the past.

Ich hatte meinen Freund Poirot kurz in seiner Wohnung auf-gesucht und ihn arg berarbeitet vorgefunden. Er war so sehrin Mode gekommen, dass jede reiche Frau, die ein Armbandverlegt oder ihr geliebtes Ktzchen verloren hatte, loseilte,um sich der Dienste des groen Hercule Poirot zu versichern.Mein kleiner Freund war eine merkwrdige Mischung ausflmischer Geschftstchtigkeit und knstlerischer Leiden-schaft. Vieler Flle, die ihn nur wenig faszinierten, nahm ersich lediglich an, weil der erste Beweggrund berwog.

Ebenso befasste er sich mit Fllen, bei denen es fr ihnwenig oder gar nichts zu verdienen gab, einfach weil dasfragliche Problem ihn lockte. Die Folge war, wie schon gesagt,dass er sich berarbeitete. Er gab das selber zu, und ich hattenur geringe Schwierigkeiten, ihn zu berreden, mich fr eineWoche Ferien nach Ebermouth, jenem bekannten Bad an derSdkste, zu begleiten.

Wir hatten vier sehr behagliche Tage verbracht, als Poirotmit einem geffneten Brief in der Hand zu mir kam.

Mon ami, du erinnerst dich an meinen Freund JosephAarons, den Theateragenten?

Nach kurzem Nachdenken bejahte ich. Poirots Freundesind so zahlreich und so mannigfaltig, und sie reichen vonMllkutschern bis zu Grafen.

Eh bien, Hastings, Joseph Aarons hlt sich in CharlockBay auf. Er befindet sich keineswegs wohl, und da ist einekleine Sache, die ihm Sorgen zu machen scheint. Er bittetmich, zu einem Besuch hinberzukommen. Ich denke, monami, dass ich auf seinen Wunsch eingehen muss. Er ist einzuverlssiger Freund, der gute Joseph Aarons, und hat mirin der Vergangenheit oft beigestanden.

Certainly, if you think so, I said. I believeCharlock Bay is a beautiful spot, and as it happensIve never been there.

Then we combine business with pleasure, saidPoirot. You will inquire the trains, yes?

It will probably mean a change or two, I said witha grimace. You know what these cross-country linesare. To go from the South Devon coast to the NorthDevon coast is sometimes a days journey.

However, on inquiry, I found that the journey couldbe accomplished by only one change at Exeter and thatthe trains were good. I was hastening back to Poirotwith the information when I happened to pass the of-fices of the Speedy cars and saw written up:

Tomorrow. All-day excursion to Charlock Bay. Start-ing 8:30 through some of the most beautiful sceneryin Devon.

I inquired a few particulars and returned to the hotelfull of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, I found it hard tomake Poirot share my feelings.

My friend, why this passion for the motor coach?The train, see you, it is sure. The tires, they do notburst; the accidents, they do not happen. One is notincommoded by too much air. The windows can beshut and no drafts admitted.

I hinted delicately that the advantage of fresh air waswhat attracted me most to the motor-coach scheme.

And if it rains? Your English climate is so uncer-tain.

Theres a hood and all that. Besides, if it rains badly,the excursion doesnt take place.

Selbstverstndlich, wenn du der Ansicht bist, sagte ich.Charlock Bay ist sicherlich ein wunderschner Flecken, undwie es der Zufall will, ich bin nie dort gewesen.

Dann verbinden wir die Pflicht mit dem Vergngen,sagte Poirot. Du erkundigst dich nach den Zgen, ja?

Das heit wahrscheinlich ein- oder zweimal Umsteigen,sagte ich und verzog das Gesicht. Du weit ja, wie diese Eisen-bahnlinien ber Land sind. Von der Sdkste Devons zurNordkste Devons bedeutet es manchmal eine Tagesreise.

Doch als ich mich erkundigte, erfuhr ich, dass die Reise mitnur einmal Umsteigen in Exeter bewerkstelligt werden konn-te und dass es schnelle Zge waren. Ich eilte gerade mit dieserAuskunft zurck zu Poirot, als ich zufllig an den Schalternder berlandbusse vorbeikam und angeschlagen sah:

Morgen. Tagesausflug nach Charlock Bay. Start8 Uhr 30 zur Fahrt durch einige der schnstenGegenden Devons.

Ich erkundigte mich nach Einzelheiten und kehrte vollerBegeisterung ins Hotel zurck. Leider erwies es sich alsschwierig, Poirot zu bewegen, meine Gefhle zu teilen.

Mein Freund, warum diese Leidenschaft fr den Auto-bus? Die Eisenbahn, schau, sie ist zuverlssig. Ihre Reifen,sie platzen nicht; die Unflle, sie ereignen sich nicht. Manwird auch nicht durch zu viel Luft belstigt. Die Fensterknnen geschlossen und die Zugluft unterbunden werden.

Ich deutete taktvoll an, dass es der Vorteil frischer Luftwar, der mich an diesem Autobusplan am meisten reizte.

Und wenn es regnet? Euer englisches Klima ist so unzu-verlssig.

Es gibt ja ein Verdeck und dergleichen. Auerdem, wennes stark regnet, findet der Ausflug nicht statt.

Well, Im afraid it means staying the nightthere. You see, the tour goes round by Dartmoor.We have lunch at Monkhampton. We arrive atCharlock Bay about four oclock, and the coachstarts back at five, arriving here at ten oclock.

So! said Poirot. And there are people whodo this for pleasure! We shall, of course, get areduction of the fare since we do not make thereturn journey?

I hardly think thats likely.You must insist.Come now, Poirot, dont be mean. You know

youre coining money.My friend, it is not the meanness. It is the

business sense. If I were a millionaire, I would payonly what was just and right.

As I had foreseen, however, Poirot was doomedto fail in this respect. The gentleman who issuedtickets at the Speedy office was calm and unim-passioned but adamant. His point was that weought to return. He even implied that we oughtto pay extra for the privilege of leaving the coachat Charlock Bay.

Defeated, Poirot paid over the required sumand left the office.
