STRESSING DEFENSES with the EMPTY SET

1. STACK FORMATION• Great NO HUDDLE FORMATION

• Good IF/THEN answers which means no wasted plays

2. Stressing the defense with 5 immediate receiving threats

3. Stress the defense LATERALLY and forces the DEFENSE to defend the entire field

4. Line up in EMPTY to run the ball

5. Empty formation gets the D line to run laterally without a reward

THOUGHT PROCESS

1. SCREEN• Take advantage of numbers laterally

• Control blitz

2. RUN• Take Advantage of box numbers

• Pull for displaced backers

3. 5 step throws• Try to get a cover 3 look

• Incorporate your cover 3 beaters from this formation

QB Fundamentals and Daily Drills

GOAL is to improve game day performance with daily drill

What we emphasize with our QBs

• Do not make major changes in delivery, by the time they get to college this is hard to correct.

• Maintain proper grip and index finger placement

What you CAN change

1. GRIP: the index finger is the last contact to ball

Upper Body

1. Hands are offset on the ball

2. Keep ball as far back as possible

3. Keep the back elbow away from the body. This helps prevent the ball from dropping

Lower Body

1. You are 2 inches lower when ball is trigger (bend in the knees)

2. No weight on the front foot

*Use Special Teams time for bonus QB indy time

*During all drills stress the need to spin the ball to start a drill, not flip. This avoid turnovers and slow timing

QB Daily Drills

1. SPIN BALL DRILL

The key is to make sure the QB is not looking at the ball

2. Warmup from 1 knee

Emphasize Fast Trigger then Easy Throw

3. Trigger (no steps)

Emphasize to only Rotate and Throw

4. Trigger (with crossover and plant steps)

Add 2 steps to Trigger drill

5. “HANG then BANG”

Lift front foot up then go through throwing motion. This check for weight on back foot and helpseliminate backward motion.

6. Trigger (plus steps #3 and #4)

Emphasize driving knee into the ground

7. Pocket Presence

QB has a short drops with small bumps or hits a with a bag

8. Movement Wave Drill with QUICKER feet and shorter movement

This is more realistic than the LONG WAVE drill

9. Throw on the run: QB runs on a straight line, not boot motion

Running to the right: Emphasize right hip through the throw

Finish must have belt and hip FLAT to the target

Running to the left…Don’t run AWAY from the ball
