Brunei, once the largest empire in Borneo, lost most of its territory to Britain/Malaysia. Its oil resources made it a wealthy state (and the sultan has expensive tastes), but its rainforest still remains in pristine condition.

Sabah is home to Sipadan, a diver's haven. Disputed until recently by Indonesia and Malaysia, Sipadan became a national park in 2002. The orange device is a safety sausage used to signal underwater divers during a safety stop.

Deep in the jungle of Sarawak, Gunung Mulu is a stunning national park listed as a Unesco World Heritage site. This extensive cave system (over 300km in length, 2/3 of which still unexplored) is home to 13 specie of bats.

Deer Cave was once the largest cave in the world until the recent discovery of Son Doong Cave, Vietnam, in 2009. It is named after the deers which came to the cave for the salt contained in bats droppings.

Bats leave the cave at dusk to hunt for insects. They eat 2/3 of their weight in insects every day.
