Der hchste Punkt der Insel ist der Hvannadalshnkur mit 2110 m. Der lngste Fluss ist die jrs mit 230 km. Die Meerenge zwischen Grnland und Island wird Dnemarkstrae genannt. Nrdlich von Island liegt die Grnlandsee, stlich liegt das Europische Nordmeer oder Nordpolarmeer, beides Nebenmeere des Arktischen Ozeans. Nach Sden liegt der Nordatlantik. Reykjavk is the most northern capital in the world. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists mainly of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle.
