1. 1. Das Emirat Kuwait (arabisch ,DMGal-Kuwait, deutsch auch: Kuweit) ist ein Staat in Vorderasien auf der Arabischen Halbinsel. Es grenzt im Norden undWesten an den Irak (240 Kilometer gemeinsamer Grenzverlauf), im Sden an Saudi-Arabien (222 Kilometer) und im Osten an den Persischen Golf (499 Kilometer). Bis 1991 warKuwait eine absolute Monarchie unter der Herrschaft der Familie as-Sabah. Gem der Verfassung von 1962, zuletzt gendert 1997, ist Kuwait jetzt eine konstitutionelle Erbmonarchie. Der Emirist sowohl weltliches als auch geistliches Staatsoberhaupt. Erernennt undentlsst die Regierung undkann auerdem das Parlament auflsen. Das Rechtssystem orientiert sich am islamischen Recht (Scharia) und an britischen Vorbildern. Erst zwischen 1991 und 1996 wurde ein Parlament (Nationalversammlung) gebildet. Das Parlament besteht aus 50 Mitgliedern, die alle vier Jahregewhlt werden. Wahlberechtigt sindalle Kuwaiter im Alter ab 21 Jahren, ausgenommen sind Angehrige des Militrsund der Sicherheitskrfte. Die Regierung ist auf ein gewisses Vertrauen im Parlament angewiesen. Kuwait ist Mitglied der UN, der Arabischen Liga, des GATT, der OPEC undder OAPEC. Following the KuwaitNajd War of19191920, Saudi Arabiaimposed a tradeblockade against Kuwait for14 years from1923 until 1937.Kuwait's oilfields were discovered in 1937. In1990, Kuwaitwas annexed byIraq.The Iraqi occupation came toan end after direct military intervention by United States-led forces. Kuwait isa constitutional monarchywith aparliamentary system of government. Kuwait City isthe country's political andeconomic capital. Kuwait hasthe most liberal political system in the GCC.Kuwait isclassified as a high income economy by the WorldBank.
