Was bedeutet ‘Loonaki’?

“Loonaki” ist über Umwege entstanden. Mein erster Internet-Nick war “Haruaki”, eine Kombination aus den japanischen Worten “Haru” (Frühling) und “Aki” (Herbst). Ein weiterer Nick auf einem anderen Portal hieß Loona (weil ich den Mond mochte, mir aber Luna zu langweilig war). Bei der Anmeldung auf deviantART war all das schon vergeben und so hab ich einfach die beiden zu “Loonaki” kombiniert. Mittlerweile hat dieser Name seine Hintergrundbedeutungen für mich verloren. Ich finde einfach, er klingt schön und ist recht einzigartig. Er fühlt sich schon fast wie ein richtiger Name an.

Wie lange zeichnest du schon?

Ich hab schon immer gern gemalt, aber so ernsthafter und regelmäßiger zeichne ich seit Ende 2003, da war ich 11.

Wie oft zeichnest du und wie lange brauchst du durchschnittlich für deine Arbeiten?

Zur Zeit zeichne ich jeden Tag, wegen meines 365 Tage Projektes. Mal mehr, mal weniger. Und wie lange ich für eine Arbeit brauche kann ich ganz schlecht pauschal sagen, weil sich das von Bild zu Bild je nach Material, Größe und Aufwand extrem unterscheiden kann. Alles zwischen 30 Minuten und 10-12 Stunden. Für meine typischen Splashy-Aquarell-Bilder brauch ich vielleicht etwa 6-7 Stunden.

Was ist das für ein Projekt? Kann man sich das ähnlich vorstellen wie die 365 Tage Projekte von Fotografen?

Ja, so ähnlich. Bloß, dass ich die Bedingungen etwas gelockert habe, weil ich ja zwischendurch noch Schule und Abi hatte. Es ging einfach darum, dass ich jeden Tag irgendwas zeichne, das musste kein fertiges Bild sein, sondern konnte auch nur ein Cartoon aus ein paar Strichen oder eine kleine Skizze oder ein gescannter Zwischenschritt einer größeren Arbeit sein. Einfach weil die Zeit nicht immer da war etwas ferig zu machen. Ich bin auch ziemlich stolz auf das Projekt, denn ich bin jetzt bald fertig. Heute ist Tag 362, also ist am Samstag der letzte Tag.

Sind danach schon Projekte in Planung bzw. laufen schon nebenbei?

Ja, meine To-Do-Liste ist ziemlich voll. Das meiste sind so Sachen, die ich mir schon länger vorgenommen habe zu machen, darunter ein größeres Illustrationsprojekt und mehrere Einzelmotive, persönliche Arbeiten also. Aber auch einige Tutorials für meine deviantART gallery und eine sehr große Auftragsarbeit (bzw. eine Zusammenarbeit mit jemandem).

Bei so großen Vorhaben braucht man sicherlich viel Inspiration. Wer sind deine Vorbilder und wie findest du deine Ideen zu den Motiven?

Ich hab keine konkreten Vorbilder denen ich nacheifere, ich sehe immer wieder an verschiedenen Stellen, verschiedene Dinge, die mich inspirieren. Die Sache mit der Inspiration ist ja sowieso was sehr spezielles. Ich hab letztens erst drüber nachgedacht. Dabei ist mir wieder klar geworden, was für seltsame, kleine Sachen den kreativen Schalter in mir umlegen können. Es sind natürlich klassische Sachen, wie andere Künstler, Bilder, Musik oder Filme. Aber ich bin auch inspiriert von zufälligsten Wortkombinationen, Zitaten, Farben selbst,Gefühlen, Gesichtern, Bewegungen, sogar einfachen Winkeln oder Kurven die ich sehe und ästhetisch finde. Und auf einmal BAM! hab ich ein Bild im Kopf.

Du hast 2009 den Manga Magie VIII gewonnen. Inwiefern war das für deine Arbeit förderlich? Hat es dir Möglichkeiten eröffnet?

Es war auf jeden Fall förderlich für mein Selbstbewusstsein als Künstler (das ehrlich nicht sehr hoch ist…), ich habe tolle Leute kennengelernt und ein wenig mit Verlagsvertretern reden können. Im Moment plane ich nicht, mich mit einem Projekt an einen Verlag zu wenden, aber vielleicht kann das in Zukunft noch praktisch werden. Es macht sich auf jeden Fall gut auf meinem “zeichnerischen Lebenslauf”. Und es hat meine Bekanntheit gesteigert.

Dein Stil ist sehr besonders, anders als das, was man sich unter Manga vorstellt. Wie würdest du ihn selbst bezeichnen?

Nicht als Manga, jedenfalls nicht mehr. Das sind meine Wurzeln, ich liebe es immernoch sehr und es stört mich nicht, wenn jemand meinen Stil so bezeichnet. Ich glaube nur, dass ich mich ziemlich davon entfernt habe, was klassichem Manga-Stil nahe kommt. Mmh. Ich würde ihn vielleicht als semi-realistischen Comic-Stil mit surrealen Elementen bezeichnen. (lacht)

Wohin entwickelt sich denn die Manga-Szene im Allgemeinen?

Keine Ahnung, irgendwie steh ich zu wenig in der Materie. (lacht) Aber ich glaube, dass anatomische Genauigkeit eine immer größere Rolle spielt (soweit man das bei Comicstilen so bezeichnen kann), ansonsten gibt es unter den einzelnen Künstlern so große stilistische Unterschiede, dass ich da keine Richtung erkennen kann, die sich als beliebteste herauskristaliert.

Hat sich das Publikum verändert?

Nicht wesentlich glaub ich, es gibt immernoch alle Altersgruppen, mit einer Konzentration auf, sagen wir, 12-25 Jährige. Und in Deutschland weiterhin

überwiegend Mädchen (auf jeden Fall unter den Zeichnern). Hierzulande war das auch nie anders.

Streetart erfreut sich momentan großer Beliebtheit. Was denkst du, welche Zukunft Manga hat?

Also in näherer Zukunft eine ganz gute. Wenn man bedenkt, dass sich diese Kunstform schon ziemlich lange auf dem Markt hält und der Japanhype noch immer andauert, wird sie uns sicher noch eine ganze Weile erhalten bleiben.

Was würdest du Anfängern raten?

Nur zeichnen, wenn man Spaß an der Sache hat und nicht weil man “unbedingt so gut wie …” sein will, ich glaube, das ist kein optimaler Ansatz. Natürlich sollte man sich verbessern wollen, aber wenn man seine eigenen Arbeiten immer nur verteufelt, weil sie eben noch nicht so gut wie “…” ‘s sind, ist das nicht förderlich. Ansonsten: beobachten, abzeichnen, üben. Lieben was man tut.

What does “Loonaki” mean?

„Loonaki“ happened by a devious route. My first internet-nick was “Haruaki”, a combination of the japanese words “Haru” (spring) and “Aki” (autumn). Another nick on another site was “Loona” (because I liked the moon, but “Luna” was too boring). When I joined deviantART, both were already taken, so I just combined them to “Loonaki”. By this time the name lost it’s background meanings for me. I just like the sound of it and that it’s quite unique. It almost feels like a real name.

For how long have you been drawing?

I always loved it, but I started drawing more serious and regularly at the end of 2003, when I was 11.

How often do you draw and how much time do you need for one piece (on average)?

Right now I draw every day, because of my 365 days project. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I can’t exactly tell how much time need for one piece, since that differs a lot depending on material, size and effort. Everything between 30 minutes and 10-12 hours. My typical splashy watercolor pictures are mostly done in 6-7 hours.

What kind of project is that? Is it similar to the 365 days projects of photographers?

Yes, quite similar. I just made the terms less strong, because I had to go to school and graduate last year too. It was just about that I draw anything each day, it didn’t have to be a finished piece, but could also be a little sketch or cartoon or a scanned step of a work in progress of a bigger work. Sometimes I just didn’t have the time to finish stuff.

I’m quite proud of that project, since I’m almost done with it. Today is day 362, so Saturday will be the last day.

Are you planning further projects or are you already doing some besides this?

Yes, my to-do-list is pretty stuffed. Most of it are things, I’m already planning for a longer time now, like a bigger illustration project and certain other pieces, personal work. But also some tutorials for my deviantART gallery and a pretty big commission (/payed collaboration with someone).

For all those big plans you sure need lots of inspiration. Who are your role models and how do you get your ideas?

I don’t have a certain role model I try to equal, I always see all kinds of different stuff in different places that I get inspired by. The thing with the inspiration is a special one anyway. I just thought about it the other day. And I noticed yet again, what weird, little things can cause my creativity to flow. It’s obvious stuff, like other artists, pictures, music or movies. But I also get inspired by random words (word combinations), quotes, colors, feelings, faces, movements and even simple angles or curves I find to be aesthetic. And the BAM! I have this picture in my head.

You won the Manga Magie VIII ind 2009 (german Manga competition). How did this help you as an artist? Did it hold opportunities for you?

It sure was beneficial for my confidence as an artist (which isn’t really high to be honest…), I got to know great people and talk to some publisher agents. Right now I don’t plan to hand in any projects to a publishers in the near future, but it could come in handy sometime. It looks good in my “art-curriculum-vitae” anyway. And it increased my popularity.

Your style is very special, not what one would consider Manga. How would you label it?

Not as Manga, not anymore anyway. Those are my roots, and I still love it very much and I don’t mind, if people say it’s Manga-style. I just think that I moved away from what you could call classic Manga.

I’d say it’s a semi-realistic comic-style with surreal elements. Haha.

How do you think does the scene evolve in general?

No idea, I somehow really don’t know that much about it. Haha. But I think that anatomical correctness becomes more and more important (as far as you can call it that in comic-styles), other than that all artists have such different styles that I can’t see a certain direction that is most popular.

Did the audience change?

Not really I guess. There are still all ages, but there’s a focus on, let’s say, 12-25 year olds. Mostly females in germany (at least among the artists). And it was never any different here.

Right now street art is very popular. What do you think will be the future of Manga?

In the near future a good one for sure. If you think about that this form of art is already existing for quite some time and that the Japan hype is still going on, it will stay present for a long while.

What advice would you give to beginners?

Only draw, if you have fun doing it, and not just because you “absolutely need to be as good as …”, I don’t think that this would be a good start. Of course you should want to get better, but it doesn’t help if you always hate on what you do, because it’s not already as good as “…” ‘s work. Apart from that: observe, copy, practice. Love what you do.
