National forewordThis standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 121 ‘Welding’ (Secretariat: Germany).The responsible German body involved in its preparation was the Normenausschuss Schweißtechnik(Welding Standards Committee), Technical Committee Abnahmefestlegungen für das Personal fürSchweißen und verwandte Verfahren.

GeneralThe aim of this standard is to ensure that the qualification testing of welders is performed under the sameconditions and using the same types of test piece, irrespective of where such tests are held. By passing thetest as specified here, a welder demonstrates that he is adequately qualified to be employed for the fusionwelding of steel in industry within the scope specified in this standard.The standard thus provides a basis for mutual recognition of welder qualification test certificates by thebodies responsible for the various fields of application.

Examiners and examining bodiesThis standard does not provide information on examiners and examining bodies involved in the qualificationtesting of welders since these are indicated in the relevant legal regulations, specialized standards, codesof practice, or technical delivery conditions.Currently, the following persons and bodies are recognized as being competent for the qualification testingof welders:

a) welding training and testing institutes;b) welding training institutes;c) examination and certification boards of the Deutscher Verband für Schweißen und verwandteVerfahren e. V. (German Welding Society);d) technical inspection associations (TÜV);e) Germanischer Lloyd;f) Lloyd’s Register EMEA;

g) testing and inspection bodies accredited by federal or Land authorities;h) welding engineers, accredited on the basis of legal regulations, codes of practice or standards;i) examiners or examining bodies, accredited on the basis of European codes of practice, legal regulationsor standards, or in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17024.

Test certificatesThis standard does not invalidate existing qualification test certificates issued on the basis of the 1997 editionof DIN EN 287-1. On the expiry of these certificates new certificates have to be issued, which may involve thewelding of further test pieces by the welder concerned (since the scope of the new certificates differs somewhatfrom those issued hitherto on the basis of DIN EN 287-1).

Job knowledge testWelders who apply for approval in Germany are required to take the job knowledge test detailed in Annex C.Welders who are employed in Germany and have not passed such a test will be at least required to demonstratethat they have some knowledge in occupational safety and accident prevention.DIN V 1738 and DIN ISO 857-1 are the standards corresponding to CEN Report ISO 15608 and InternationalStandard ISO 857-1, respectively, referred to in clause 2 of the EN.

AmendmentsThis standard differs from the August 1997 edition in that it has been completely revised.
