Sein Vater, der Geiger Corneliu Niculescu, viele Jahre lang der Hauptpartner von Gheorghe Zamfir (Panflöte), war Florins erster Lehrer an der Violine. Im Alter von 6 Jahren trat der Junge in die Enescu-Akademie in Buka- rest ein, wo er zum klassischen Violinsolisten ausgebildet wurde. Er wurde mit einem 1. Preis der Akademie ausge- zeichnet und im Jahr 1984 mit einer „besonderen Erwäh- nung“ der Jury des internationalen Wieniawski-Wettbewerbs Django Reinhardt (1910-1953), das Gitarren-Genie, war Europas größter Jazzmusiker. Er war ein Superstar zu seiner Zeit, führte aber ein unberechenbares Leben zwischen gla- mourösen Hotelsuiten und Nachtquartieren im Freien und machte sich einen Sport daraus, enorme Gagen zu verlangen und sie innerhalb von Stunden zu verprassen. Django, der völlige Analphabet, hatte Bewunderer und Freunde unter den größten Künstlern und Intellektuellen seiner Zeit und wurde der größte Stolz seines Volkes, der Roma. TThhee RRoosseennbbeerrgg TTrriioo consists of the three cousins NNoonnnniiee,,NNoouuss''cchhee and SSttoocchheelloo RRoosseennbbeerrgg. All three have been play-ing music since their childhood days. As children, they havelearnt by listening and watching their family members at cele-brations and gatherings. Following the great gipsy musicaltraditioon, they were tought to play by ear, and to practicerestlessly, playing the classics over and over again. Neither ofthe three can actually read or write music, but they are none-theless one of today's most impressive jazz bands, and cer-

Das Rosenberg Trio (bestehend aus den drei CousinsStochelo, Nous’che und Nonnie Rosenberg) und Florin Nicu-lescu sind mir seit Jahren ein Begriff, selbst getroffen hatteich sie aber noch nie. Ivan Minthe, der Manager des TrioRosenbergs, kontaktierte mich und schickte die vom Trioselbst produzierte CD/DVD, die mir auf der Stelle sehr gefiel.Mein Interesse wurde verstärkt durch die Mitwirkung vonBiréli Lagrène, den ich als 12-jährigen Bub in Stuttgart beieinem Konzert gehört hatte. Das war damals schon schwerbeeindruckend. Ich fuhr sofort nach Paris. Ivan Minthe erklär-te, dass das Rosenberg Trio sich von der Industrie trennenmöchte und seit langem mit ENJA durch die CDs von RenaudGarcia-Fons vertraut ist. Wir verstanden uns auf Anhieb sehrgut, und schnell war ein mehrjähriger Exklusivvertrag unter-schrieben. Meine Erfahrung mit Gypsy Music beschränktesich bisher auf die serbische Brass Band Ekrem Sajdics. DerRoma-Künstler und ENJA-Musiker Ferenc Snétberger mussmehr zu Jazz und Klassik gezählt werden. Reine „musiquemanouche“ ist ein neues Kapitel für ENJA. Kurz zuvor hattemich Florin Niculescu angerufen, ganz ähnlich motiviert. Ichfand einen Mitschnitt mit ihm und Biréli Lagrène auf YouTube(Vienne Festival) und war fasziniert. Beide Ensembles wolltenihre Hommage an den Übervater Django Reinhardt imRahmen seines 100. Geburtstags aufnehmen. Die Rosen-bergs stehen dabei vor allem für die immense Power derDjango-Musik, Niculescu mehr für die unglaubliche Eleganzin seiner mehr Jazz-inspirierten Interpretation. Mehr und tie-fer kann man wohl kaum in die Totalität von Djangos Musikeinsteigen. Die Wege der beiden Gruppen kreuzen sich oft,mal spielt Stochelo bei Florin, mal umgekehrt. So treten siezum Beispiel im Juli gemeinsam in einem großem Konzert inMoskau auf.

their talent grew and demand became constant.At the age of 12, Stochelo was awarded the prize for bestmusician at a child's musical contest on dutch television, andsince then the trio has been constantly on the rise, on a cour-se that has now taken them worldwide to play on the mostreputed stages along the world's greatest musicians, inclu-ding a memorable show at New York's Carnegie Hall forlegendary violonist Stephane Grapelli's 85th birthday celebra-tion, and many Otter magic moments.

The Rosenberg Trio's discographic debut, "Seresta" was thestart of a series of albums which have been aknowledged byjazz lovers, gipsy musicians and music critics alike as "musthaves". The album released in may 2007, simple named"Roots" pays a large tribute to Django's tunes and also featu-res some of Stochelo's compositions and others, And wassoon followed by the latest, "Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli"featuring Tim Kliphuis on violin, released in March 2008.

NNoonnnniiee RRoosseennbbeerrgg, born in 1956, is the double-bass playerof the trio. As a young boy, Nonnie was surrounded by gui-tars, which his father and uncles played. Of course, Nonniecaught the music virus in his early days, dreaming to becomea great Flamenco guitarist, so he tried to gain access to hisfather's guitar and play it whenever his father was away. Butbeing born in a family of so many guitarists can be tricky, andNonnie was soon asked to pick up a double bass to join thefamily band, as teere were already too many guitarists. For a

The cohesion of the trio, the strength, might and precision ofNonnie and Nous'che's breathtaking rhythms and uncatcha-ble tempo, the ease with which Stochelo's lead guitar singsand swings above this impressive Rhythmik section, makesthis band a truly unique act in the world of Jazz, both in theirown rendering of standards, of Django's classic compositionsand in the greatly melodic original tunes that Stochelo himselfmanages to compose.

Perhaps it was why they were adopted by Maestro StéphaneGrappelli, who, after seing and hearing them for the first time,immediatly invited them to play with him, taking them world-wide, across Europe, and also to celebrate his 85th birthdayat New York's Carnegie Hall. This friendship was not to enduntil Stéphane's death, and they recorded together onStéphane's birthday album "85 and still swinging", on theRosenberg Trio's "Caravan" (Verve, 1994) and on ManhattanTransfer's 1997 Album "Swing". In 2008 The Rosenbergs paida wonderful tribute to their long-time friend on what wouldhave been his 100th birthday.

when it comes to gipsy jazz, a fast tempo can be lightning-fast. Nous'che plays Eimers Guitars and Selmer Guitars, strin-ged wich Gallistrings' 11/47 gipsy strings.

SSttoocchheelloo RRoosseennbbeerrgg, born in 1968, is the lead-guitarist. Thefunny thing about Stochelo is that he started to play guitar atthe very "late" age of 10 years old, which is very rare in sucha musical family. But Stochelo caught up incredibly quick,constantly replaying Django's solos over and over when hewas not learning from his father Mimer and his Unklee WassoGrunholz. Rapidly spotted as an exceptional talent, Stochelohad several early opportunities to get signed on variousrecord companies, but his parents wanted to keep him pro-tected from the universe of "Show business" while he wasyoung, so he remained to play with his cousins and maturedwhat would become one of the leading formations in thehistory of gipsy jazz. Stochelo's unmistakable, extremelymelodic playing is now universally regarded as one of themost brilliant forms of guitar plaing ever. But he himself does-n't want to hear that. "Forget about Stochelo and all theothers" he says. "If you want to learn and understand gipsyjazz, start with Django, the best guitarist that ever was". But itseems his playing is proving Stochelo wrong even in the Sinticommunity he is regarded as a true legitimate heir of theuntouchable Icon of swing, and his rendering of Django'sclassics at the Samois Festival brought tears to the eye's ofDjango's sister Carmen. Not just a virtuoso player, Stochelo isthe man behind compositions such as the enchanting "ForSephora" ( a tune which has conquered the hearts of so manyguitarists that it is already a classic to practice upon), the dre-amy "Rumba Sunset", and many others that reveal Stochelo'sunique ability to bring the melody to the forefront of even tuewildest, fastest runnig solo, making anything he plays a com-

NNoouuss''cchhee RRoosseennbbeerrgg, born in 1965, plays the rhythm guitar.Needless say Nous'che started playing in his early childhooddays too, as a young Rosenberg boy is very likely to. He per-formed in local meetings, churches and kept playing all day,everyday. He was 16 when they were awarded the Dutch tele-vision's music contest first prize, and 24 when tue Rosenbergtrio took the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois' stage byStorm and delivered a memorable set that earnt them a toprank in today's gipsy jazz universe. Since then the Rosenbergtrio's reputation is growing worldwide, and Nous'che isrecognized as one of the very best rhythm guter players onthe planet. Florin Niculescu is one of the finest violinists on the interna-tional jazz scene today.Through many musical collaborationsthis captivating musician has developed a distinct sound andlanguage, building on a solid classical education and linkinggypsy traditions to diverse forms of jazz. His impeccable tech-nique and outstanding virtuosity praised by fellow musiciansand audiences alike are not a means to an end but a way ofexpressing his artistic personality. And rather than creatingboundaries, his obvious spiritual affinity with StéphaneGrappelli (1908-1997) has enabled him to explore new andinnovative musical grounds. Following a long and fruitfulassociation with Biréli Lagrène, Florin Niculescu is now invol-ved in a new project, reworking some of Django Reinhardt's(1910-1953) material.

Florin Niculescu was born in Bucharest on 8 February 1967,into a settled gypsy Family, all professional musicians: his fat-her, violinist Comeliu Niculescu, spent ten years as the maincollaborator of pan flautist Gheorghe Zemphir. His motherwas a pianist his sister played the cello, and his uncle wasfirst violin in tue Bucharest opera orchestra. Growing up insuch a family meant his entire childhood and teenage yearswere solely devoted to music, particularly the violin. «My fat-her was my first violin teacher. We started to work seriouslywhen I was four or five years old. Thanks to him heacquireda strong base, which proved really useful during my trainingand my musical career. Unfortunately, his professional dutiesled him around the world. He was often absent from home, somy mother took over and conlinued my musical éducation».

and in 1999 «For Your Friends» with Marcel Azzola. The 1999recording of «L'Esprit Roumain, Florilège» reunited fatherand son,surrounded by Jani Lincan (cymballum), AngeloDebarre (guitar), Antonio Licusati and Costel (bass) andlonoutz (accordeon ). The same year, accompanied by orga-nist Emmanuel Bex and Simon Goubert, he recorded «GypsyBallads» nominated «Album of the Year» and was awardedthe Talent Jazz prize at the Midem in 2001.

The end of 2000 found Florin Niculescu in New York, sharingthe bill with Biréli Lagrène, Babik Reinhardt, JimmyRosenberg and Bucky Pizzarelli at the first Django ReinhardtFestival. The concert was recorded live and the album«Django Reinhardt NY Festival - live at Birdland» was relea-sed. This event was even more memorable because of hisMeeting with George Benson who was very impressed by theViolinist and showered him wich praise. In 2001 Florin touredvarious European festivals as part of a trio. He performed withEmmanuel Bex and François Lezeau at tue Vienna Jazz festi-val and wich Emmanuel Bex and Simon Goubert at theMarciac Jazz festival, opening for Pianist Keith Jarrett. In Oslohe associated himself with the danish bass player NielsHenning Orsted Pedersen and the belgian guitarist PhilipCatherine.

At the age of six Florin entered the George Enescu Academyof Music in Bucharest to consolidate his home training. «Iwas lucky enough to have a great teacher who had previousiytaught many Romanian soloists and who really valued the factthat I had a solid musical base right from the start». Duringhis studies,Florin performed works from the violin repertory,first as a member of the school orchestra, then in chambermusic orchestras and finally as a soloist. He was awardedfirst prize from the Academy and in 1984 received a specialmention from the jury at the Henry Wieniawski Internationalcompetition in Lubjana. He also played alongside his father atweddings and celebrations, a demanding yet useful experien-ce which added extra strings to his bow and developed hissense of improvisation.

In the early 90s, aged 23, Florin left Romania for France andmoved to Paris. In 1991 he met guitarist Boulou Ferre and hisbrother Elios, which marked the first of many collaborations.Four years later he joined guitarist Romane's quintet. He leftto form his own band with hass player Jacques Vidal, pianistMichel Graillier, guitarist Frédéric Sylvestre and drummerSimon Goubert. In 1995, he joined the «New Quintette du HotClub de France» lead by Babik Reinhardt (1944-2001), son ofDjango, and participated on their eponymous album. That same year, Biréli Lagrène invited him to join his newquintet, The Gipsy Project, inspired by the «Quintette du HotClub de France» founded by Django Reinhardt and StéphaneGrappelli. Florin took on the role ot the late violin master inthe band's lineup. Their first eponymous recording withsuperb interplan between Lagrène and Niculescu, receivedthe «Prix du Public» al the «Djangos d'or» in 2002. Their fol-low up album «Gipsy Project and Friends», featuring rewor-ked versions of the late musicians legacy, was released in2002. Soon after, the quintet embarked on a long tour, appe-aring at prestigious international festivals such as Montreux,Antibes/Juanles Pins, Marciac and Vienna. A DVD, «BiréliLagrène Gipsy Project and Friends Live at the Vienna JazzFestival», is now available. Florin Niculescu was outstandingin the band and his ability to interact wich Biréli Lagrèneexceptional. Inspired by the sound of the «Quintette du HotClub de France» but not imitating it, The Gypsy Project was asplendid showcase for manouche jazz, keeping its spirit alive.Being constantly exposed to a large public, tue music hasnow emerged from the shadows and enjoys the recognition itdeserved. One hearing of Florin Niculescu's homage toStephane Grappelli sends the listener back to the old recor-dings of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, where Grappelliworked his magic with his most famous musical partner, gui-tar wizard Django Reinhardt. What a joy to listen to Grappelli.Not only could he make the violin sing and swing. He playedwith fire and passion. There are times that Grappelli seems tomake a u-turn on his instrument that is so sharp that thestrings are in danger of being broken or indeed are burningup. Now that's music that swings. Like Grappelli, Niculescu has the ability to make the violinsing. He doesn't just show off with a lot of fast notes, hemakes the music flow effortlessly with passion and commit-ment. Niculescu has a superb technique and his group consi-sting of Peter Beets on piano, Bruno Ziarelli on drums andDaryl Hall on bass plus guest guitarists Christian Escoudé;and Marc Fosset are doing a very good job of backing him.They swing comfortably and the record is a treat for the earsfrom start to finish. Highlights include a take on the classicReinhardt/Grappelli composition “Daphné,” where Niculescureally shows his chops. Elsewhere, he performs a stunningversion of “Old Man River” that manages to be both wild andsentimental. It is downright impossible not to like music thatswings as infectiously as this and Niculescu can play so eventhe alley cats of Paris must be dancing. An album like FlorinNiculescu Plays Stephane Grappelli is proof that the musicGrappelli treasured so much is still alive and not just a nostal-gic thing of the past. Zwei höchst ungleiche Charaktere trafen da zusam-men: hier der kultivierte, höfliche und bis zur Knickrigkeit kor-rekte Feingeist Grappelli, dort der hemmungslos unzuverläs-sige, des Lesens und Schreibens unkundige und an Geldkaum interessierte Hallodri Reinhardt. Das ungleiche Paar

sorgte für eine Revolution: Mit seinem Quintette du Hot Clubde France brachte es Europa auf die Landkarte des Jazz. Am23. Januar wäre Django Reinhardt 100 Jahre alt geworden.1953, als er an einem Gehirnschlag verstarb, legte man seineGitarre neben anderem Hab und Gut ins Feuer. So, wie esBrauch der Manouche ist.

Jean-Baptiste, der mit seiner Frau Bella hierlebt, erleidet schwere Verbrennungen. Seine linke Hand bleibtverkrüppelt - dabei hat er gerade seine erste Schallplatte alsBanjospieler aufgenommen. Der junge Mann macht aus derNot eine Tugend und wird einer der bekanntesten Jazzgitar-risten aller Zeiten. Er nennt sich Django.Als Jean-BaptisteReinhardt am 23. Januar 1910 geboren wird, ist die Familiegerade in Liverchies in Belgien. Seine Mutter gehört einerSchauspielertruppe an, die durch Belgien, Frankreich undAlgerien reist; der Vater ist Musiker. Sie sind Manouches,französischsprachige Sinti. Manouche oder Manusch heißtMensch in Romanes, der Sprache der Roma. Es ist im fran-zösischsprachigen Raum die Selbstbezeichnung der Sinti,jener Roma, die schon im Mittelalter aus Indien nach Mittel-und Westeuropa einwanderten - oder, nach Lesart mancherSinti, eines Volkes, das wie die Roma aus Indien kam, abernicht zu den Roma gehört. Im 19. Jahrhundert werden vieleSinti sesshaft, weil die Obrigkeit Repressalien gegen das "fah-rende Volk" verhängt. Familie Reinhardt stellt ihren Wohnwa-gen erst 1918 dauerhaft in Paris ab, in der Nähe der Porte deChoisy, einem der alten Stadttore. Jean-Baptiste ist etwazwölf, als er zu musizieren beginnt, erst auf der Geige, dannauf der damals populären Banjo-Gitarre Guitjo. Er lerntschnell, schaut sich Fingersätze von anderen Musikern ab undspielt bald in einem Tanzlokal in der Rue Monge. Mit einemFuß steht der junge Django im glitzernden Paris der GoldenenZwanziger, mit dem anderen in den Traditionen seiner Familie,die den Moden der Gadsche, der Nicht-Sinti, skeptisch gegen-übersteht. Lesen oder schreiben kann Django damals nicht.Als er mit dem Akkordeonisten Jean Vaissade erste Plattenaufnimmt, steht "Jiango Renard" auf der Hülle.

Denn in seinem Stil lie-fen viele Traditionen zusammen: die Walzer-Folklore derBals Musette und der gedämpfte, swingende Viertel-Beatder Dreißiger; Tonleitern der Sinti-Musik, die bis auf indi-sche Raga-Wurzeln zurückreichen, und Elementen derFlamenco-Phrasierung; eine individuell verstandene Ideevon Bebop und der gestalterische Output eines Gedächt-nisses, das spontan auf Tausende Melodien zurückgrei-fen konnte; schließlich eine Spieltechnik, die aufgrundder behinderten linken Hand auf komplett eigene Harmo-nisierungen, Klangfarben, Stimmführungen zurückgriff.

WWoollffrraamm KKnnaauueerr aauuff JJaazzzziinnssttiittuutt DDaarrmmssttaaddtt--OOnnlliinnee::Django Reinhardts Position in der Jazzgeschichte ist le-gendär: Er war der erste europäische Musiker, der ganzim Sinne des Jazz einen eigenständigen Personalstil ent-wickelte, in dem er seine musikalische Herkunft aus derManouche-Kultur mit leichtfüßig swingenden Jazzrhyth-men verband, instrumentale Virtuosität mit einfallsreicherSpontaneität.
