Vorwort

The existing learner’s “Double Feature” is a beginner’s instruction book for guitar and bass. You will learn to play a melody according to the notes, rhythmics in eighth notes, song accompaniment, and playing both instruments together.

Exercises (Ex.) and chapters for guitar is marked with treble clef.

Exercises (Ex.) and chapters for bass is marked with bass clef.

Many themes such as song accompaniment, lear-ning rhythms or tablatures are pretty similar for both instruments. It therefore makes sense, to learn these themes on a parallel. These chapters are iden-tified with treble and bass clef.

Exercises (Ex.) and pieces which are marked with a CD symbol, can be heard, and played along with the CD included.

Furthermore, you will find instructions with a video link in different parts of this book. The videos can be found on the internet on the website

which will show you the relevant theme with the help of a short video clip.

relevant exercises. It is possible for you to choose a theme that you wish in the relevant chapter. If you do not wish to go through all the notes in chapter one relating to a particular melody in question, you may on a parallel begin with chapter two, with song accompaniment. This makes learning an instrument livelier, in that you may begin to play music with your friends at the very early stages.

Accordingly, you can also begin early to play the three songs at the end of this book. Each of the in-struments has different levels of difficulty and de-pending on the level you are at, you will be able to play the individual voices.

Some of the exercises will definitely remind you of songs which you have heard before. I have espe-cially marked them with the instruction, “sounds like...” to give you a practical approach to pieces which are renowned in the world.

In writing this book, I have intentionally avoided popular songs. Your creativity is called for, in that you should play the songs you like using the te-achings and the support of this book to help you.

In the attachment, you will find a list of songs which you may play with the appropriate playing tech-niques.

I would like to thank the following persons for their support and trust in me writing this book.

Elvira Klemmer, who got the ball rolling, Hans-Jörg Fischer for your trust and your overwhelming sup-port in “Finale”, Janis Würzburger for the photo- shoot, my students for having the patience in trying out the exercises, my family and of course my dear wife Manu for her patience, love and eternal trust.

My thanks also to the following companies:Markacoustic & Smile Music, Karl Höfner GmbH, Gitarrenbau Heiner Dreizehnter, Vovox, Schertler SA, Delano Pickup Systems und Pyramid Strings.

1. Notes on the fretboard

The first three note values

Note value means, the length of time the note is held. You will learn three note values in the exer-cises below:

The whole note has an unfilled note head without a stem.

The half note has an unfilled note head with a stem.

The quarter note has a filled note head with a stem.

These note values appear within a bar. The bar in-dicates the amount of beats and which values are used for counting the beats. This sounds rather com-plicated at first instance, but it is really not.

Our first bar is in 4/4 time. We take quarter notes, four of them and beat (count), one, two, three, and four. If you hold one note for four beats, you now have a complete bar and this note is called a “whole note”. If a note is held for two beats, which makes half a bar, this note is called a “half note”. If a note is held for only one beat , this note is called a “quarter note”, simply because it’s held for a quarter of a bar.

?&

Ex. 1

As you see, it isn’t as difficult as it looks. These three note values are configured in such a way that when you add them up all together, it always ends up with a value of 4 beats in a bar. For the time being, we are now dealing with the 4/4 time. If you encounter a bar in 4/4 time with more or less than 4 beats, then this bar is incorrect. If the time is correct and complete, each beat correlates with the respec-tive note value. You can determine where and when the next bar begins.

We start with the first exercise. Exercise 1 deals with the note values described above and you should clap this exercise. You have to be certain how fast you wish to count, in order to determine the beat.

Ex. 2

Ex. 3

And again, do the same exercise by saying a sylla-ble, instead of clapping. We use the syllable ta. Be careful of note length and only hold the syllable as long as the given note value.

Gitarre

Guitar

Notes on the guitar – first fret

Our first note on the guitar is “E”. Its note head is found on the first staff line and looks like this :

The E note

If you wish to play this note on the guitar, you must play the first string. This string is the thinnest string among the six.

Before the time signature you will see the so-called treble clef which is used for guitar notes. Other in-struments, for example the bass use another clef. So you will quickly recognise, that the notes are playable on the guitar.

Alternate picking with the plectrum

If you have successfully mastered exercise 3 with the syllables, we now want to try this exercise on the guitar with note E. You will need a plectrum to pick the first string. The following pictures will show you how a plectrum is held. Use your thumb and your first finger on your picking/striking hand and try not to press the finger too tightly against each other, instead keep them relaxed.

Please view the following video.

When doing an alternate pick, the string is picked once from above and once from below. Picking to-wards the floor is called “down-pick” and picking away from the floor is called “up-pick”.

In the following exercise, pick the note “E” inter-changeably from the top and from below – this is called the alternate pick.

Abschlag / down-pick Aufschlag / up-pick

Ex. 5

Ex. 6

The now following excercise will be something completely new for you. This instruction book re-quires you to practice the exercises with the syllable ta prior to playing the guitar. If you do this for all exercises, you will realise how much easier it would be to play with instrument.

Ex. 7

Ex. 8

In both the following exercises, you have to write your own notes. You will notice in Exercise 7, that notes are missing in some bars. Write the notes down as you wish, with note “E” in the bars and check if the total note value equals four. Complete the beats and the direction of the picking. Have fun!

Ex. 9

The F note

Our second note on the guitar is called the F note and it is found on the first string in the first fret. You press the note with the index finger, by pushing down your finger on the string just before the first fret. Be careful to push your finger tip into the fret from the top to ensure that the neighbouring string is not touched. The thumb of the left hand is placed behind the neck of the guitar, approximately at the same height as the middle finger.Insert the counts in Exercise 9 by yourself and say it out loud again with the syllable ta. Go through the exercise before you play it on the guitar.

In the following exercise you will notice the beat markings on the left are written over the note sy-stems throughout. You will recognise that these note systems are simultaneously played. The anchor point where both the voices are joined, is the mea-sure of the beat which is the basis of the rhythmic pulse – the counts 1, 2, 3 & 4. It is therefore impor-tant, that both musicians play at the same speed.

Insert the counts in the exercise and go through the exercise with the syllable ta.
