    The Heart of the Pump:Shaft and Bearing DesignFlowserve offers the largestshaft and bearing componentsavailable in standard ANSI

    pumps. The followingcomparison of a Mark 3Group 2 power end withthat of a major competitordemonstrates the benefitsof heavy-duty design.

    Unique ExternalMicrometer ImpellerAdjustment reducesmaintenance time and,most importantly,

    is precisely accurate.

    Simply loosen the setscrews.Using a wrench rotate the

    bearing carrier counterclock-wise until the impeller lightlytouches the rear cover plate.

    Select the impeller setting.Each notch on the carrier ringrepresents exactly 0.10 mm(0.004 in) of clearance. For animpeller setting of 0.5 mm(0.020 in) count five notchescounterclockwise.

    Move the bearing carrierclockwise the selectednumber of notches. Tightenthe setscrews and check theimpeller clearance with thefeeler gauge.

    Bearings (see Table 1)Greater load handling ratingmeans extended bearing life.

    Extended bearing life comparisonis the ratio of the load ratings tothe third power or:

    I.B. =6078 3

    = 1.43 (+43%)5398

    O.B. = 8709

    3

    = 1.61(+61%)7439

    Shafts (see Table 2)

    Solid shafts are recommendedover shaft sleeves because theyreduce the harmful effects ofdeflection and vibration. Whileshaft sleeves may simplify main-tenance, solid shafts reduce it.

    Proper selection of wet-endmaterials of construction andmechanical seal design offsetpositive features of the shaftsleeve option.

    Prima3 bearings are designed tolast up to 61% longer.

    The formula I = L3/D4 offers an

    index of deflection to comparepump designs where:I = index of deflectionL = length of shaft overhang

    from bearingD = rigid shaft diameter

    Note: The Deflection Index pro-vides an approximate comparisonof shaft stiffness. A detailedanalysis should be made todetermine actual shaft deflection.
