빌립보서 3:5-11

1.

정의란 무엇인가? 의롭게 산다는 말은 무슨 뜻인가? 무엇이 옳은 일인가? 요즈음 미국에서

가장 자주 듣게 되는 질문입니다. 바로 이것이 영화 <노아>를 통해 작가와 감독이 관객에게

제기하는 중요한 질문 중 하나입니다. 성경이 노아를 '의로운 사람'으로 제시하고 있기 때문입니다.

창세기 6 장에서 노아는 다음과 같이 소개됩니다.

What is justice? What does it mean to “live righteously?” What is the right thing to do? These are some of the most-asked questions in the U.S. these days. Indeed, this is one of the important questions that the producer and the director of the movie Noah leave us with. This is because the Bible sets forth Noah as the “righteous person” of his time. In chapter 6 of the book of Genesis, Noah is introduced as follows:

노아의 역사는 이러하다. 노아는 그 당대에 의롭고 흠이 없는 사람이었다. 노아는 하나님과

동행하는 사람이었다. (창 6:9)

These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God. (Genesis 6:9)

홍수가 시작될 때, 하나님은 노아에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다.

When the flood started, God said to Noah:

내가 보니, 이 세상에 의로운 사람이라고는 너밖에 없구나. (창 7:1)

"Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time.” (Genesis 7:1)

이 두 구절에서 보듯, 노아는 무엇보다도 의로운 사람입니다. 작가와 감독은 이 본문에

기초해 '의' (righteousness)혹은 '정의'(justice)의 문제를 다룹니다. 하지만 영화에서 노아는 의로운

사람의 모델이 아니라 '자기의'(自己義, self-righteousness)에 도취한 사람으로 그려집니다.

As you can see in these two verses, Noah was the most righteous person in his time. The writer and the director approach the issue of “righteousness” and “justice” based on this reading. In the movie, however, Noah is depicted as a person obsessed with self-righteousness, not a model of a righteous person.

처음에는 자애롭고 인자한 아버지였습니다. 하지만 하나님의 뜻을 지키고 실천해 가는

과정에서 노아는 점점 괴물이 되어갑니다. 영화의 흐름 속에서 노아가 결정적으로 달라지는

전환점은 일라가 임신했다는 사실을 알고 나서부터입니다.

In the beginning, Noah was a loving and kind father. His character, however, slowly turns treacherous in his quest for fulfilling “God’s will.” The turning point in Noah’s transformation is when he finds out that Ila is pregnant.

이미 말씀 드린 것처럼, 영화에서 노아는 죄의 뿌리가 자신에게도 있다는 사실을 확인하고

인류가 모두 사라지는 것이 하나님의 뜻이라고 단정합니다. 홍수가 끝난 후 자신의 가족까지 다

사라져야만 하나님의 뜻이 완성된다고 믿었습니다. 그래서 아내감을 찾아달라는 햄의 요청을

거절합니다. 햄이 스스로 아내감을 찾아 오다가 덫에 걸려 곤경에 처하자, 노아는 햄만을 구출해

방주로 돌아옵니다. 이 일로 인해 햄은 아버지에게 원한을 품습니다.

As discussed last week, after Noah realizes that he, too, has the seed of evil within him, he concludes that God’s will is for the entire humanity to disappear from the earth. He believes that “God’s will” will only be fulfilled when his family, too, disappears after the flood is over. Thus, he denies Ham’s request to find a bride for him. When Ham is caught in a trap while returning with the bride he found, Noah rescues only Ham and brings him back to the ark. This incident causes Ham to hold a grudge against his father.

홍수가 시작된 후에는 큰 아들 셈과도 갈등을 겪습니다. 아이를 낳을 수 없었던 일라가

므두셀라에게 치유를 받고 셈의 아이를 임신합니다. 노아의 아내 나아마는 아들과 며느리를

데리고 노아에게 찾아가 그 사실을 알립니다. 노아는 아들일 경우에는 살려 두겠지만 딸일

경우에는 태어나는 즉시 죽을 것이라고 말합니다. 세 사람은 노아의 말에 모두 경악을 합니다.

아무리 사정해도 노아는 듣지 않습니다.

After the flood starts, Noah also finds himself in conflict with his oldest son, Shem. Ila, who was once barren, becomes pregnant with Shem’s child after Methuselah cures her. Noah’s wife, Naamah, takes Shem and Ila to Noah and tells him about Ila’s pregnancy. Noah says that he will let the baby live if it is a boy but will kill the baby immediately if it is a girl. Naahmah, Shem, and Ila are all shocked by what Noah says and ask him to reconsider. Noah, however, would not listen to them.

해산달이 가까와 오자 셈은 뗏목을 만듭니다. 태어날 아기를 살리기 위해서 아버지를 피해

달아나려 한 것입니다. 뜻을 굽히지 않는 남편과 죽음을 불사하고 뗏목을 타고 떠나려는 아들

사이에서 나아마는 어쩔 줄을 몰라합니다. 물이 다 빠지지 않은 상태에서 뗏못을 타고 나간다면

모두 죽을 게 뻔합니다. 나아마는 남편 노아를 따로 찾아가 눈물로 호소합니다. 그 장면을 영상으로

보시겠습니다.

As the pregnancy advances, Shem builds a raft. He wants to run away from Noah to save his baby. Naahma does not know what to do, caught between Noah, who would not change his mind, and Shem, who is trying to run away from Noah and risk his life. It is clear that Shem’s family will die if they leave on a raft before the flood subsides. Naahma, in tears, goes up to her husband, Noah, and begs him to reconsider. Let’s watch the scene.

노아는 아기를 죽이는 것은 내가 원하는 일은 아니지만 해야만 하는 일이라고 말입니다.

그것이 의로운 일이라고 말입니다. 그러자 나아마가 맞받아 치지요. 그렇게 한다면 당신은

모두에게 미움 받는 상태로 홀로 외롭게 죽게 될 것이라고. 그것이 옳은 일이라고. 그것이 정의라고.

이 말에 노아는 잠시 멈칫하지만, 마음을 돌리지는 않습니다. 곧바로 바깥으로 나아가 셈이 만들어

놓은 뗏목을 불질러 버립니다.

Noah says that he does not want to kill the baby, but it is something he must do. He says it is the righteous thing to do. Naahma responds: “If you do that, you will die alone, hated by everyone. That would be right and just.” Hearing this, Noah hesitates, but he does not change his mind. He goes outside and burns the raft that Shem built.

마침내 일라가 딸 쌍둥이를 낳습니다. 셈은 창을 들고 노아를 찾아갑니다. 딸들을 살리기

위해 아버지를 살해하려고 한 것입니다. 그 때, 두발가인이 햄의 도움을 받아 노아와 싸우고

있었습니다. 노아의 자기의로 인해 발생한 갈등이 여기서 정점에 이릅니다. 노아는 두 아들 중

하나에게 죽임을 당할 처지에 있었습니다. 그 때 방주가 땅에 닿으면서 일대 혼란이 일어났고,

두발가인이 노아를 해칠 찰나에 햄이 두발가인을 살해합니다. 노아는 그것을 하나님의 개입으로

받아들입니다. 태어나는 아기를 통해 인류가 증식되는 것을 막기 위해 하나님이 자신을 살려

주셨다고 믿은 것입니다.

Finally Ila gives birth to twin girls. Shem takes a spear and goes up to Noah. He had planned to murder his father to save his daughters. At that time, Tubal-cain, with Ham’s help, was fighting Noah. The conflicts that started because of Noah’s self-righteousness reach the climax at this point. Noah was at the brink of being killed by one of his sons. Right then, the ark is breached, and a chaos ensues. When Tubal-cain is just about to hurt Noah, Ham ends up killing Tubal-cain. Noah accepts the incident as God’s intervention. He believes that God spared his life so that he can stop the birthing, thereby preventing humanity from multiplying.

노아는 칼을 들고 며느리의 방으로 찾아갑니다. 하지만 며느리는 아기들과 함께 이미 몸을

피했습니다. 그 때 방주 지붕에서 아기 우는 소리가 들립니다. 노아는 미친듯이 사다리를 뛰어

오릅니다. 그리고는 지붕 가장 자리에 서서 두 딸을 품에 안고 두려워 떠는 일라에게 다가갑니다.

그 때의 노아의 표정은 더 이상 인간의 얼굴이 아닙니다. 일라는 아기들을 진정하게 해 달라고

부탁하고 자장가를 불러 줍니다.

Noah runs to his daughter-in-law’s room with a knife in his hand. But, she has already escaped with her babies. That’s when Noah hears the babies crying on the deck of the ark. Noah runs up the ladder like a mad man. He approaches Ila holding her two daughters in her arms at the edge of the deck shivering in fear. By then, Noah’s face is no longer that of a human. Ila begs him for time to calm the babies and she sings a lullaby.

아기들이 울음을 그치고 잠에 들자 노아는 칼을 듭니다. 칼을 잡은 팔이 잠시 허공에 멈추어

부들부들 떱니다. 그리고 노아는 무너지듯 고개를 숙여 손녀에게 입을 맞춥니다. 그는 돌아서서

걸어가다가 칼을 떨어 뜨리고 하늘을 향해 말합니다. "저는 더 이상은 못하겠습니다."

Noah lifts up his knife when the twins stop crying and fall asleep. Noah’s arm holding the knife stops in the air and shakes. Then he drops his head and kisses his granddaughters on their foreheads. He drops his knife as he turns around and walks away, and he shouts to the sky, “I can’t do it anymore.”

이 장면 안에는 일종의 아이러니가 숨어 있습니다. 노아가 옳은 일 즉 정의를 이루기 위해서

가장 몰두했을 때 그는 가장 인간답지 못했습니다. 그의 얼굴 표정은 사나운 짐승과 같았습니다.

반면, 옳다고 생각하는 그 일을 포기하고 돌아섰을 때, 노아는 인간의 얼굴을 되찾습니다. 여기에

작가와 감독이 전하려는 메시지가 숨어 있습니다. 인간이 의로운 일에 몰두할 때가 가장 위험할

때입니다. 영화는 자기의에 빠져 사는 사람이 얼마나 악마적일 수 있는지 그리고 얼마나 많은

상처와 갈등과 혼란을 만들어 낼 수 있는지를 보여줍니다.

This scene is imbued with irony. Noah turned treacherous when he was most engrossed in accomplishing the right thing, the righteousness. His facial expressions were like that of a ferocious beast. On the other hand, when he turned around giving up on the things he thought were right, he regains his humanity. This is where the producer and the director planted their message they wanted to relay. Human nature can be most treacherous when they are self-absorbed in the ideals of doing the right thing. This movie shows us how evil human nature can be when they are engrossed in self-righteousness. It also shows us how they can cause pain, conflicts, and confusion in the process.

이 대목에서 여러분에게 떠오르는 얼굴이 적어도 한 두 명은 있을 것입니다. 온실에서 살아온

사람이 아니라면 그동안 살아오면서 이런 유형의 사람을 가정에서, 직장에서 혹은 교회에서

경험해 보았을 것입니다. 자기만 옳다는 확신이 너무 강하여 주변 사람들에게 상처를 주고 돌이킬

수 없는 파국을 만들어 내는 사람들 말입니다. 혹시 여러분이 그런 사람은 아닌지요? 만일

그렇다고 생각하신다면 불행 중 다행입니다. 대개 자기의에 빠진 사람들은 그 사실조차도

인정하지 않기 때문입니다.

I am sure it strikes a chord with most of you. Unless you have been living in a sheltered environment, I believe you have come across this kind of person in your family, work place, or church. There are people who are so stodgily self-righteous, they hurt people around them and cause irrevocable catastrophes. By any chance, are you that kind of a person? If you think so, there is hope. Usually, people who are self-righteousness don’t even admit the fact that they are.

과거에는 아버지들이 보통 이러했습니다. 고집불통과 완고함이 과거 아버지들의

특징이었습니다. 그로 인해 어머니들은 모진 아픔을 감내해야 했고, 자식들에게 치유할 수 없는

상처를 주는 일이 많았습니다. 요즈음에는 자식의 성공에 목숨 건 어머니들이 이런 불행을 만들어

내기도 합니다. 이런 사람들은 교회에서도, 직장에서도 혹은 사회에서도 얼마든지 만날 수

있습니다. 교회의 분열, 직장에서의 갈등 그리고 이 사회의 갈등은 주로 자신의 신념에 대해

과신하는 사람들에 의해서 만들어집니다.

Our forefathers of the past generations were as such. Stubbornness and bullishness were their characteristics. In result, our mothers had to endure painful situations, and they gave their children incurable scars. These days, some mothers who risk their necks for the success of their children fill a similar role to result in avoidable misfortunes. We can easily come across these people in our church, work place, or in the society. Discord in the church, conflicts at work, and disorder in the society are usually caused by people who are overly confident about their beliefs.

자기의 신념이 옳다는 확신이 믿음과 결합되면 고칠 수 없는 질병이 되어 버립니다. 영화

<노아>는 그 위험성을 경고하고 있습니다. 하나님의 뜻을 찾는 것은 좋은 일이고 또한 하나님의

뜻에 목숨 바치는 것도 아름다운 일입니다. 하지만 자신의 생각과 하나님의 뜻을 분별하지 못하고

자신의 생각을 하나님의 뜻이라고 믿고 그것에 목숨을 건다면, 엄청난 불행의 원인이 될 수

있습니다. 그렇게 되면, 자신의 신념에 따라 잔인무도한 행동을 하면서도 그것을 하나님의 뜻으로

정당화시킵니다. 믿지 않는 사람들은 그런 사람들의 말과 행동을 보고 하나님에게 등을 집니다.

그들이 믿는 하나님은 잔인한 분이기 때문입니다.

When exuberant confidence melds with one’s stern faith, it forms an incurable ill. The movie, “Noah”, is

a warning of such. It’s a good thing to search for God’s will, and it’s a beautiful thing to dedicate our

lives to accomplish God’s will. But, when we cannot distinguish the difference between our ideals and

God’s will, and dedicate our lives for our ideals mistaken for God’s will, we can cause tremendously

unfortunate situations and results. When this happens, people usually justify their cruel and

treacherous behaviors as God’s will. When unbelievers see such people and their acts, they turn from

God. Because they think God must be cruel.

이것은 기독교만의 문제가 아닙니다. 세계를 공포 속에 몰아넣고 있는 ISIS 는 "이교도를

살해하는 것이 알라의 뜻이다"라는 확신에 목숨을 바친 사람들입니다. 그들은 매일같이 어린

자녀를 데리고 산에 올라 맞은 편의 동네를 보여주면서 "저들을 살해하는 것이 가장 고귀한 일이며

알라의 뜻이다"라고 주입을 시킵니다. 그런 과정을 통해 자살테러범이 만들어집니다. 이와 같은

근본주의자(fundamentalist)들은 어느 종교에나 존재합니다. 그것은 종교의 문제가 아니라 인간의

타락한 본성의 문제입니다. 인류 역사에서 일어난 잔인한 살륙들 중 대부분은 종교와 상관 없이

일어났습니다.

This doesn’t happen in Christianity only. The ISIS, bent on terrorizing the world, is a group of radicals willing to risk their lives believing that killing heathens is heaven’s will. They brainwash their young children by taking them to the top of mountains to show the village on other side, and tell them that killing them is the most precious thing and it’s heaven’s will. Suicidal terrorists are raised this way. These kinds of radicals exist in all religions. This is not a problem arising from religion, but it’s a problem arising from the corruption of the human nature. Cruelest atrocities to humanity happen time and again irrespective of the religion.

이것이 인간이 처한 딜렘마입니다. 정의에 대한 목마름은 누구에게나 있습니다. 이 세상이

돌아가는 모습을 제대로 보는 사람이라면 "이건 아닌데!"라고 느끼게 되어 있습니다. 자신의

가정도 그렇고, 가족간의 관계도 그렇고, 교회도 그렇고, 직장도 그렇고, 나라도 그렇고, 세상

돌아가는 것도 그렇습니다. 하루에도 여러 번 우리는 "이건 아닌데!"라고 탄식합니다. 우리 모두는

인간은 이보다는 더 나은 존재이고, 인간 사회는 이보다는 더 나은 사회여야 한다고 믿습니다.

그것이 인류가 공유하고 있는 믿음입니다.

This is the dilemma humanity is faced with. Everybody has a thirst for the righteousness. If one sees the wrongs of this world with righteous perspective, he should feel, “this is not right!” That’s how it should be with one’s family, relationship with family members, work, country, and the world. We exclaim, “This is not right!” many times a day. We believe humanity is capable of being better and our society needs to do better. I think this is universal throughout humanity.

하지만 어떻게 해야 하는지에 대해서는 아무에게도 정답이 없습니다. 정답이 있다고 나서는

사람들이 있습니다만, 알고 보면 그들이 더 큰 문제를 만들어 냅니다. 독재 정권에 항거하여 정의의

사도처럼 행동하던 사람이 권력을 잡고 나면 그보다 더 악한 독재자로 변신하는 일들이 얼마나

많습니까? 작게는 가정의 문제에서부터 크게는 국제적인 문제에 이르기까지, "이건 아닌데!"라는

확신은 있는데, 그 상황을 어떻게 바꿔야 하는지에 대해서는 뾰족한 해답이 없습니다.

But, no one has the right answer to how we shall go about to solve this. Some people voice out saying they have the right answer, but they usually make the problems worse. We’ve seen so many leaders act as if they are the justice apostles when they resist against a dictatorship, but they actually become a worse dictator. As small as family matters to the international issues; we have the discernment to say “This is not right!” but we don’t have the right answer as how the wrong needs to be corrected.

유대교는 율법을 해법으로 제시합니다. 구약성경에 의하면, 하나님은 무엇보다도 의로우신

분입니다. 옳고, 바르고, 정확한 분입니다. 하나님의 그 의가 율법에 드러나 있습니다. 율법은

의로움에 대해 가르쳐 주고 의롭게 살도록 안내해 줍니다. 율법을 얼마나 많이 배우고 얼마나 잘

순종하느냐에 따라 그 사람의 의가 달라집니다.

Judaism presents commandments as their solution. According to the Old Testament, God is the most righteous being. He is right, straight, and precise. The Mosaic laws and regulations reflect the righteousness of God. The commandments teach us about the righteousness and how to live righteously. One’s righteousness depends on how much one studies and obeys the commandments.

하지만 율법에 대한 배움과 실천이 인간을 의롭게 하기보다는 자기 의에 빠지게 만든다는 데

문제가 있습니다. 율법을 알면 알수록 자신의 생각이 옳다는 확신은 커집니다. 율법을 지키는

수준이 높아질수록 자신이 의로와졌다는 생각이 커집니다. 그렇게 자기의가 커지다 보면 결국

하나님의 자리에 앉아 모든 것을 판단하고 결정하려 합니다. 예수께서 당시의 바리새인들과

율법학자들을 비판한 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다. 작가와 감독은 영화 <노아>를 통해 유대교적

의에 대해 의문을 제기했다고 할 수 있습니다.

But, there is one problem. Rather than making us righteous, merely learning and practicing the commandments make us fall into self-righteousness. The more one learns about the commandments, the more convinced that his ideals are right. The more one obeys the commandments, the more he believes he is righteous. As one’s self-righteousness grows, he tries to sit at the God’s throne and decides everything. This is exactly why Jesus condemned the Pharisees and legal scholars. I think I can say that the producer and the director of the movie, “Noah”, raised the question as to the Judaic righteousness.

그렇다면 어떻게 자기의에 빠지지 않고 의롭게 살 길을 찾을 수 있을까요? 어떻게 하면,

자기의 신념과 하나님의 뜻을 분별해 가면서 겸손히 그분의 뜻을 찾고 그 뜻을 따라 살아 의를 이룰

수 있을까요?

If so, is there a way to carry oneself without falling into self-righteousness? How then can we discern between one’s self-righteousness and God’s will that one may be humbled to seek and follow the Lord’s will in living the righteous life?

오늘 읽은 사도 바울의 말씀에서 그 길을 발견합니다. 바울 사도야말로 자기의로 충만했던

사람입니다. 그렇게 생각할만한 모든 인간적인 조건을 갖춘 사람이었습니다. 특히, 율법에 대해

누구에게도 뒤지지 않을만큼 많이 알았고 또한 철저하게 실천했습니다. 그는 자기 생각이 곧

하나님의 뜻이라고 여겼습니다. 모든 것을 자기 기준에서 판단하고 선택했습니다. 그것이

하나님의 뜻이라고 믿었기에 철저했고 냉담했고 단호했으며 비정했습니다.

Apostle Paul in today’s reading found such a way. Apostle Paul was a man of distinction. He had all the attributes of a person of stature. In particular, he was second to none in the knowledge of the Mosaic Law, and was a strict adherent of the regulations. His bearing was thought to be synonymous with the will of the God. He therefore acted out of his own sense of righteousness and judgment. Because he was steadfast in his beliefs as to the will of the God, he acted sternly, heavy-handedly with disdain.

그는 예수가 부활했다고 선전하는 자들을 제거하는 것이 하나님의 뜻이라고 생각했습니다.

그래서 그리스도인들을 박해하는 일에 앞장섰고, 스데반이 돌무더기 속에서 처참하게 죽어가는

현장에서 정의가 이루어졌다고 생각했습니다. 누가는 당시 바울의 태도를 이렇게 적어 놓았습니다.

'바울'이라는 이름은 로마 이름이었고, 그의 히브리 이름은 '사울'이었습니다.

He was determined to root out those disciples spreading the news of the resurrection of Jesus. So he led the persecution of the Christians, and found justice in the stoning martyrdom of Stephen. It was recorded that that Paul was his Roman name, whereas his Hebrew name was Saul.

사울은 스데반이 죽임 당한 것을 마땅하게 여겼다.(행 8:1)

And Saul approved of their killing him. (Acts 8:1)

사울의 행동이 사막 한 복판에서 인질을 세워 놓고 칼로 목을 자르는 ISIS 대원의 행동과

얼마나 다릅니까? 그렇게 자기의로 충만하던 사람이 예수 그리스도를 만나고 나서 뒤집어집니다.

스스로 의롭다고 생각하게 만들었던 모든 조건이 하나님 앞에 아무 것도 아님을 알았습니다. 그런

것으로는 의롭게 될 수 없음을 깨닫습니다. 오늘 본문에서 그는 세 번이나 같은 말을 반복합니다.

Do you think Saul's act here was different from what ISIS did in the desert: holding a hostage in the middle of a desert to execute with a knife? This man, who had been so confident in himself, was changed completely after meeting Jesus Christ. For he realized that all his fancies that caused his self-righteousness were nothing before God. He found his self-made fancies could not bring him to true righteousness. In today’s scripture, he repeats the same sentence three times.

나는 내게 이로웠던 것은 무엇이든지 그리스도 때문에 해로운 것으로 여기게 되었습니다.

(7 절)

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. (Verse 7)

내 주 예수 그리스도를 아는 지식이 가장 고귀하므로, 나는 그 밖의 모든 것을 해로 여깁니다.

(8 절)

What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake

나는 그리스도 때문에 모든 것을 잃었고, 그 모든 것을 오물로 여깁니다. (8 절)

I have lost all things. I consider them garbage (Verse 8)

과거에는 자랑거리였던 것이 지금은 부끄러운 것이 되어 버렸습니다. 과거에는 의에 대해 꽤

안다고 생각했는데 그것이 모두 착각이었고 교만이었음을 깨달았습니다. 과거에는 하나님의 뜻을

행한다는 확신을 가지고 신념을 따라 살았는데 지금 와서 보니 하나님께 그리고 이웃에게 해를

끼치고 살았음을 깨달았습니다. 그래서 이렇게 고백합니다.

What was the source of pride in the past became embarrassing. It was the moment of recognizing that it was all self-deceit and arrogance to think he knew well about righteousness. In the past he lived with confidence that he carried out the will of God; at the very moment he saw that he had lived harming God and neighbors. So he confessed like this:

나는 그리스도를 얻고, 그리스도 안에 있는 사람으로 인정받으려고 합니다. 나는 율법에서

생기는 나 스스로의 의가 아니라, 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 말미암아 오는 의 곧 믿음에

근거하여, 하나님에게서 오는 의를 얻으려고 합니다. (8-9 절)

that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. (Verse 8-9)

예수 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 자녀로 회복되는 것이 진실로 의롭게 되는 길임을

깨달았습니다. 율법을 행하는 것으로는 자기의만 키울 수 있을 뿐 진정한 의를 이룰 수는 없습니다.

예수 그리스도의 보혈로 죄 씻음을 받고 성령의 능력으로 새로 지음을 받아 하나님의 자녀로

회복되어야 합니다. 그럴 때 하나님은 우리를 의롭다고 인정해 주시고 또한 의롭게 만들어

주십니다.

He came to realize that being restored to the children of God in Jesus Christ could be the true righteousness. By carrying out to fulfill the law, we can grow only self-righteousness but not the true one. We have to be renewed and restored to the children of God by being washed out of our sins in the Blood of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Only then, God would accept us as righteous, which would make us righteous.

바울의 자기 고백에서 저는 진정한 '의'가 이루어지는 과정을 봅니다. 먼저, 하나님과의

진정한 만남이 있어야 합니다. 예수 그리스도를 통해 하나님의 자녀로 회복되고 그 관계 안에

머물러 살아가는 변화가 일어나야 합니다. 신약성경에서 '의'는 가장 먼저 하나님과의 바른 관계를

의미합니다. 인간이 마땅히 있어야 할 상태에 있기에 그것을 '의'라고 부릅니다.

In Paul's self-confession I see how the true ‘righteousness’ is gained. First, there must be a real encounter with God. Then the change follows by being recovered as God's children through Jesus Christ and by living in that relationship. In the New Testament ‘Righteousness’ means, first, the right relationship with God. For that is the right state as a human being.

사람이 살아야 할 마땅한 상태에 머물러 살면, 자기 안에 의가 없다는 사실을 깨닫습니다.

선악을 판단할 능력이 우리에게는 있지 않습니다. 우리는 다만 '지금' '나'에게 무엇이 유익한지를

판단할 수 있을 뿐인데, 그것조차 틀리는 경우가 얼마나 많습니까? 그렇다면, 나와 이웃 모두에게,

지금과 미래에 동일하게 '옳은' 일이 무엇인지 어떻게 알 수 있겠습니까? 사정이 그런데도, 자신이

모든 것을 알고 있는 듯이 생각하고 행동합니다. 그것이 얼마나 큰 착각이요 교만인지를

깨닫습니다.

If we live in the right state, we realize that there’ no righteousness in ourselves. We do not have the ability to tell between good and evil. We are only able to judge whether what is good for ‘myself’ at

‘this moment’; even then we often get it wrong. If so, how could we know what would be right to both ourselves and our neighbors and at the same time for the present and the future? Yet despite these circumstances, we act as if we know everything. We realize how willful deception and arrogance it is.

그 진실을 깨닫고 자아를 내려 놓고 그 자리에 예수 그리스도를 모셔 들이고 늘 주님과 함께

동행하면 그분의 의가 우리를 통해 드러나게 됩니다. 하나님의 일을 내가 대행한다고 생각하면 안

됩니다. 그렇게 생각하는 순간 자기의에 빠져 버립니다. 옳고 바른 일은 내가 판단하고 선택하는

것이 아니라 내 안에 계시는 주님께 의지하고 순종할 때 그분이 이루시는 것입니다.

When we realize the truth and replace our egos with Jesus Christ and always walk with the Lord, his righteousness will be revealed through us. We should not think ‘I’m doing God’s work’. When we think like this, we fall into self-righteousness. What is right is not what I can judge and decide but what God can accomplish when I rely on the Lord in me and obey him.

오늘은 강림절 두 번째 주일입니다. 성탄절이 얼마 남지 않았습니다. 그 어느 때보다

사랑하는 사람들을 생각하게 되는 시기입니다.

Today is the second Sunday of the Advent season. Christmas is coming soon. This is the time to think about our loved ones.

여러분은 사랑하는 사람들을 생각할 때 어떤 느낌을 가지십니까? 마지막 숨을 거둘 때 가장

한스러운 것이 사랑하는 사람들을 더 사랑하지 못한 것이라고 합니다. 여러분은 사랑에 있어서

어떠하십니까?

What feelings arise when you think about your loved ones? It is said that the greatest regret when we take our final breath is about not having loved our loved ones more. What about you in terms of love?

혹시 지나친 자기의로 인해 가정에서 혹은 직장에서 사랑하는 사람들에게 상처를 주고

살았던 것은 아닌지요? 영화 속에서 노아는 자기만 옳다는 확신으로 인해 두 아들의 마음에 분노를

심어 주었습니다. 그 분노는 아버지를 살해하게 만들 정도로 강렬했습니다. 노아만큼은 아닐지

몰라도, 여러분도 그렇게 살아 온 것은 아닌지요? 혹시 지금도 대립과 갈등 속에서 지내고 있는

것은 아닌지요?

By any chance, have you hurt your loved ones at home or workplace because of excessive self-righteousness? In the movie, Noah planted anger in his two sons’ hearts because of the conviction that only he was right. The anger was strong enough to want to do away with their father. Have you also experienced such strife, although not as much as Noah? Are you still living in the midst of conflict and discord?

강림절은 우리 안에 더 깊이 오시는 주님을 모셔 드리는 계절입니다. 주님 앞에 조용히

머물러 여러분의 마음을 열고 주님의 은총을 구하시기 바랍니다. 하나님 앞에 더 깊이 머물러

있도록 힘쓰십시오. 그리고 스스로에게 물어 보십시오. 사랑하는 사람과 대립하며 상처를 주고

있는 그 문제가 정말 그렇게 중요한 문제입니까? 그것에 대한 여러분의 생각이 정말 옳습니까?

여러분의 취향은 아닙니까? 여러분의 고집은 아닙니까? 여러분의 체면은 아닙니까?

The Advent season is the time to greet the Lord who comes inside of us deeper. I encourage you to stay still in the Lord, open your heart, and seek the Lord’s grace. Strive to stay deeper before God. And ask yourself questions. Is the issue that hurts your loved ones through conflict a really important

matter? Is your thought about the issue really right? Could it be a mere predisposition? Maybe you are set in your ways? Maybe it is in your persistence?

부디, 주님께서 주시는 은총을 받아 여러분의 주관과 입장과 신념을 내려 놓을 수 있기를

바랍니다. 그럴 때, 주님께서 새로운 마음을 주실 것입니다. 그 마음을 따라 가십시오. 의가

이루어질 것입니다. 바른 일이 이루어질 것입니다. 모든 것이 제 자리를 찾고 화해와 평화가

이루어질 것입니다.

I pray that you may put down your conviction in your persistent ways by receiving the Lord’s grace. Then the Lord will give you a new heart. Follow this heart. Justice will be fulfilled. The right thing will be done. Everything will find its own place, and reconciliation and peace will come.

이번에는 눈을 바깥으로 돌려 보십시다. 요즈음 주변에서 일어나는 일들을 보면 심난하기

짝이 없습니다. ISIS 는 또 한명의 인질을 처형하겠다고 위협하고 있습니다. 퍼거슨 사태가

진정되기도 전에 뉴욕에서 또 다른 사건이 일어나 온 나라가 술렁거리고 있습니다. 미국

대통령까지도 "미국 사법 제도에 구멍이 생겼다"고 인정할 정도가 되었습니다. 모든 미국인의

아버지로 존경받고 사랑받던 빌 코스비(Bill Cosby)의 어두운 면이 드러나 모두에게 충격을 주고

있습니다. 지금까지 그에게 성폭행을 당했다고 주장하는 여성들이 20 명이 넘는다고 합니다.

그런가 하면, 코미디안이며 영화배우인 크리스 록(Chris Rock)은 얼마 전 인터뷰에서 "만일 가난한

사람들이 억만장자들이 사는 모습을 보면 즉시 폭동이 일어날 것"이라고 고백했습니다. 그만큼

빈부의 격차가 커졌다는 뜻입니다.

Now, let us lift our eyes to the outside world. Things happening around us these days are deeply worrisome. ISIS is threatening to execute another hostage. Another tragedy occurred in New York while the Ferguson shooting has us unsettled, and the whole nation is on an edge. Even the President acknowledges that there is a void in the American system of Justice. The dark side of Bill Cosby, who has been respected and loved as the father of all Americans, was alleged, shocking everyone. More than 20 women are said to allege sexual misconduct. Also, Chris Rock, who is a comedian and an actor, stated in an interview a while ago that “If poor people knew how rich people are, there would be riots in the streets.” It means that the gap between the wealthy and the poor has widened that much.

이건 아닙니다. 정말 아닙니다. 인간이 이럴 수는 없습니다. 인간 사회가 이렇게 되어서는 안

됩니다. 인간은 이보다 잘 할 수 있습니다. 인간 사회는 이보다 훨씬 더 나아질 수 있습니다. 하지만

우리는 "어떻게? 누가?"라는 질문 앞에 말문이 막힙니다.

It should not be this way. It really should not be. Humanity should not be like this. A human society should not be this way. Humanity can do better than this. A human society can be improved much more than this. However, we become speechless upon the question of “how?” and “who?”

저와 여러분이 해야 합니다. "아이고, 내가 뭐라고 그러십니까? 나는 그저 나 혼자 먹고 사는

일에도 정신이 없습니다"라고 대답하시겠습니까? 아닙니다. 이 사회가 정의로와지는 것은

대통령이나 고위 공직자 혹은 정치인들만의 책임이 아닙니다. 그런 사람들은 그들 나름의 몫이

있을 것입니다. 하지만 아무 것도 아닌 우리에게도 우리 나름의 몫이 있습니다. 우리 각자가 자신의

몫을 다하지 않는다면, 우리가 사는 사회는 결코 정의로와질 수 없습니다.

You and I should do it. Would you say, “Oh, my, who am I? I am just busy taking care of myself?” NO. Presidents, high-ranking government officials, and the politicians are not the only ones responsible to make a just society. They have their own share, but we, our everyday selves, have our own share as well. If we do not fulfill our own part, the society we live can never be just.

다만, 우리가 할 수 있다는 생각을 내려 놓아야 합니다. 내가 무엇을 알 수 있다고 생각하지

말아야 합니다. 옳고 그름을 내가 따져 알 수 있다고 자신하지 말아야 합니다. 우리의 지식과

경륜과 확신을 모두 내려 놓아야 합니다. 그것은 자기의로 이끌 뿐입니다. 바울 사도처럼 모든 것을

내려 놓고 주님 앞에 머물러 살아야 합니다. 하나님을 섬기며 예배하기를 멈추지 말아야 합니다.

매일 주님과 동행해야 합니다. 그러면 그분의 의가 나를 통해 드러나게 될 것입니다.

However, we should put down our notion of us being the driver. We should not think that we are in the

know. We should not be confident thinking that we can see through what is right and wrong. We should

put down all our notions that come from our knowledge, experiences, and convictions. They will only

lead us to self-righteousness. We should put down everything and stay in the Lord, like Apostle Paul. We

should not stop from serving and worshipping God. We should walk with the Lord every day. Then the

Lord’s righteousness will be revealed through us.

'산상설교'(The Sermon on the Mount) 중에 주님께서 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다.

The Lord said the following during the Sermon on the Mount:

의에 주리고 목마른 사람은 복이 있다.

그들이 배부를 것이다. (마 5:6)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Matthew 5:6)

부디, 저와 여러분, 우리 모두가 의에 주리고 목 마른 사람이 되기를 바랍니다. 내 안에 진정한

의가 이루어지기를 그리고 이 세상에 정의가 온전히 실현되기를 간절히 소망하는 저와 여러분이

되기를 바랍니다. 그 목마름을 이미 오신 주님, 앞으로 오실 주님 그리고 지금 우리 가운데 더 깊이

오시는 주님을 통해 넉넉히 채워지기를 간절히 기원합니다. 그로 인해 내 안에 하나님의 의가

깃들고 나를 통해 세상으로 흘러나가게 되기를 바랍니다. 그럴 때 진정한 평화가 우리 삶을 다스릴

것입니다.

I pray that you and I will become those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. I pray that you and I sincerely hope to see true righteousness being fulfilled in us and justice being done in the world. I sincerely pray that our thirst be filled through the Lord who came, who will come, and who comes into us even deeper at this moment. I pray that God’s righteousness pierces in us and flows out into the world through us. Then true peace will reign over our lives.

오, 주님

목이 마릅니다.

내 안에 의가 없기에

이 세상에 정의가 없기에

그래서 주님을 바라봅니다.

주님을 구합니다.

Oh, Lord, I thirst. I do not have righteousness in me, The world does not have righteousness, So I thirst And hunger. So I look upon the Lord. I seek the Lord. Come to us. Come deeper into our hearts. Come And become our righteousness. Amen.
