New child carseat lawNICOLE JOHN>>[email protected]

AS of 1 May, children underthe age of three will berequired to only travel in a

car if theyaresecured inacarseat. This is required by a new

regulation of the National RoadTraffic Act.

Motorists who have childrenunder the age of threeunrestrained in their vehicle willbe fined.

This comes after some motor-ists refuse to take seriously theconstant warnings and calls byemergency services and authori-ties to have children properlysecured in vehicles.

Speaking to Maritzburg FeverCaro Smit of South AfricansAgainst Drunk Driving (SADD),said the organisation has beenworking long towards getting thisspecific regulation passed.

According to Smit, the MedicalResearch Council (MRC) stated

that car crashes are the leadingcause of injury and/or deathsamong children under the age offive in South Africa.

“ArriveAlivesaysthatcorrectlyinstalled car seats can reduce therisk of deaths by 70% in the infantage, and 47% to 54% in childrenaged one to four.”

Daily, toddlers can be seenjumping on back seats, hangingout of windows and sitting onpassenger’s laps.

“Upon speaking to parents, somewill tell you they never grewup with child car seats andsurvived.Parentsmayalso tell youthattheirchildrendonotlikebeingrestrained and cry constantly. Some parents insist you not tellthem what to do with theirchildren,” said Chitra Bodasing,ER24 spokesperson.

Bodasing said that emergencyservicesattendtocollisionsinvolv-ing children every week.

“The majority of unrestrainedchildrenareflungoutofthevehicle

and either sustain critical injuriesor die on impact.”

While the law forces parents touse child car seats for childrenundertheageofthree, thisdoesnotmeanolder childrenshouldnotal-so be secured in a car seat.

Last year, SADD distributed 20newcarseatsforchildrenatWood-lands Primary and TPA School inNorthdale.

“We call on people to donatetheir old unwanted seats to SADDand we will get them refurbishedandhandedout toneedy families,”said Smit.

Smit has just returned from ameeting in Morocco where a planfor 2015 was drawn up for theglobal campaign.

“We will be working with thesame17schoolsonaprojectcalled#SaveKidsLives with regards toroad safety. We will look at seat-belt use, as well as pupil visibility, alcohol abuse and other relevantroad- safety issues.

Strike action at themedical centreNQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]

THE National Education, Health and Allied Workers’Union (Nehawu) stated that it will continue to fightfor the rights of the Midlands Media Centre (MMC)Private Hospital workers following a deadlock inwagenegotiationsbetweentheunionandthehospital. This resulted in hospital staff resorting toprotected strike action last week Friday.

By Monday afternoon the two parties had notreached consensus.

Nehawu’s provincial secretary PhakamaNdunakazi said the threemonth negotiations withhospital management have proven to be fruitless.

“The employer did not agree with our demands. We went to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, but the matter was notresolved.

“Right after the strike started last Friday, the hospital applied for a lockout of employees who wereon strike. We are still waiting for management to tellus when we can meet to reach a conclusion in thesewage negotiations,” said Ndunakazi.

Ndunakazi told the Maritzburg Fever reporterthat most of the hospital employees cannot affordmedical aid because of their low wages.

MMC marketing and public relations officer Kavith Harrilall said that the company’s salary increase, which ranges from 6.8% to eight percent, effectiveon 1 March this year, is “generous” compared to thecurrent and projected inflation rate.

“MMC is disappointed that at this stage the wagenegotiations between the hospital and Nehawuhave reached a deadlock. MMC’s offer is based onvarious salary brackets as well as allowances andcompany contributions towards staff benefits.

“MMC recognises Nehawu as an important stakeholder in the employeremployee relationship. However, a defensive lockout will be implementedto ensure good order during the protected strikeaction,” said Harrilall in a statement.

Harrilall added: “MMC is of the respectful viewthat strike action is not an effective way to settlethis impasse.Negotiation and dialogue serveasidealtools from which parties may reach sustainableterms of settlement.

“MMC management and the board of directorsassure all stakeholders that adequate contingencymeasures have been implemented to minimise theimpact of the strike on patients, visitors, doctors, service providers and staff.”

GETTING a lowcost home that will caterfor her infliction is the wish of a 24yearold woman who says she feels neglectedand ignored.

Phumzile “Lilo” Duma has a biggrowth on her back and face, is paralysedand can only get around in a wheelchair.

Her cry for a better house is importantto her and her 52yearold mother,Florence Duma.

Despite filling in an application formand giving it to her councillor’s secretarylast year, the family have not received aresponse to their request for a suitablehome.

One of the people Florence claims tohave spoken to in this regard is wardCouncillor Mbuyiselwa Ngcobo.

Attempts to contact the councillorhave continually failed.

“Getting a proper house would softenthings and I know she will feel better. Atthe moment she curses the day she wasborn and she sees herself as a burden.

The one room house we live in leaks whenit rains and because of her condition, shesleeps on the floor. We use a pit toilet andthat is a challenge as I have to carry herto the toilet outside and she is heavy andI have to be very careful how I carry her,”said Florence.

“I wish for a proper house that willcater for my special needs. I’m not askingfor an expensive house, just somethingthat will accommodate my needs. Ifthere is anyone who can assist me in thisregard, I will die in peace,” said the younglady when asked what she wished for.

Project manager for VulindlelaDevelopment Association (VDA) Thembi Khuzwayo said there are structures inthe community that should be contactedwith regards to the Duma matter.

“As VDA our project covers theEmafakatini area, but there are channelsthat need to be followed.

“ Again with such cases, communitystructures, such as the ward councillor, care givers and ward committeemembers must be contacted so thatpeople with special needs, such as Lilo, can be assisted,” said Khuzwayo.

‘What DrNala just didis unacceptable, why I saythat is becauseit wouldhavebeenbetter ifhe started as Plentian from thebeginning. The other confusing factor is that he still uses the sameBible that Christians are using that is a total contradiction of heis now saying.’

Reverend CalebMbokazi:

‘He started by taking a second wifewhile he was a Christian. That alonewas the opposite of Christianity. Ican’t make a clear understanding ofwhat his intentions are. In my opinion I think Dr. Nala is one of thepastors of the last days. The Biblewarned us about these incidentsand that is exactly what is happening.’

ReverendBethwellZulu:

‘This is an insult toChristianity. Fromwhat Iknow asChristians, welive differentlives and we must portray a goodimage to the public. It’s a pity because we know Nala as a Christianand suddenly that has changed.’

THE number of players representingKZN in the PSL and national teamshave declined over the past few

years. The midlands region in particularhas not done well both in youthcompetitions and club football.

People should also remember thatKZN is the biggest province in South Africa. Numbers on their own do not help ifpeople are not doing the right things.Pietermaritzburg is representedonly by five players in the professionalleague compared to over twenty five afew years back.

The lack of facilities is not helping thesituation. I firmly believe that authoritiesare letting down the young people in ourdistrict. We have worse football facilitiescompared to the apartheid era. This issad considering that the majority offootballers are young black boys andgirls.

League matches are played on gravelfields. Why do municipalities find itdifficult to prepare fields for weekendfixtures i.e. cut grass and mark the lines? We cannot talk service delivery andfail the young people on just simplethings like marking the fields.

We have not promoted any team tothe NFD in the past 15 years. The calendarof competitions is disadvantagingour clubs. Planning is nonexistent.Football is played for four to five months. We lack the interest and the will to dothe correct things.

SAB clubs have to play on a Saturdayand Sunday. Do football authoritiesunderstand the implication of this to thehealth of our young people. Playing asingle 90minutes match in a weekendis a challenge in itself. Technically, thisalso has a lot of implications. It developsslow football and yet internationallyintensity is critical.

Refereeing also needs someattention. I have been very impressedwith most of the guys in our local SABleague. They do honest jobs althoughthey can do with more and bettertraining. It is important that cheating isremoved out of KZN football. Bribing ofrefereesdoesnothelpimprovethegame.Referees themselves should understandthe implications of dishonesty in theircareers. KZN does not have referees inthe two top tiers of South African football. We also do not have people featuring in international competitions.

I would like to encourage thosehonest guys to carry on with their goodwork.Coaching itself need to improve ifour young players are to reach international standards. Football, just likeschooling, requires lots of dedicationfrom all parties. It is unfortunate thatcurrently South African children do nothave proper support structures bothat home and within communities.

We live in a society where theinterests of adults come first.

We expect someone else to look afterour children. Unzima lo mthwalo.

HILLVIEW FC MUST COMECLEANJERRY BARNESI MUST say I was very happy to hearthat the Hillview FC Eastertournament at Newholmes groundswas going to take place again thisyear. I believe this wellorganisedevent has become one of the crowdpullers.

I remember many years agowhen one of the long serving andhard working members ofPietermaritzburg and DistrictSoccer Associations (Padsa) KayParus and a few others pulled outfrom this organisation and startedtheir own event away fromNorthdale Stadium.

I was also there to support themand also attended their event fromday one. Although I was told orunderstood that there were a fewdifferences between Padsa officialsand Hillview FC management atthat time, I personally did not seeParus and his group as rebels or asplinter organisation.

I saw a competition and anotherdevelopment of our local soccer. Ialso saw more options for players, teams and local media houses. Iactually still have a picture that Itook during the first tournament atNewholmes grounds of a certain

junior team from Glenwood. The two players that I remember

in the photo are BrendanBezuidehout and Papi Petersen, who were still very young andplaying for the under 12 side. By theway these two players are grown upmen now and one of them is happilymarried.

This week I was very disappointed when I heard that the sameHillview FC Easter tournamentallowed one of the local professionals PSL and Chippa United playerEnver Wiltwer to play for HillviewOld Boys. Why allow a professionalto come compete against amateurplayers? It was also alleged that acertain player was given marchingorders (red card) during the gamesbut was later allowed to carry onplaying after paying a fine.

So in short, he paid money toclear his name and to be reinstatedinto the event. Oh what a mistake!

As event organisers, Hillview FCofficials were just too wrong and outof line to change or overlook the redcard issued by the referee for adisciplinary reason, just to makemoney, if all this is true.

I believe events like these are notmoney making scheme but thedevelopment of the local game andan exercise to unearth unknowntalent.

I am also aware that Hillview FCopponents and certain unhappyofficials out there on the oppositeside may cook up some negativestories or look for faults in the event, just to paint a black picture.

I would like to profer a platformto Hillview FC officials to come outclean, explain and give us a fair andhonest answer about what exactlyhappened. My email address [email protected] or083 521 9553.
