Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA)NIA History Industry-Push: formed in 2005 by a number of industrial companies active in nanotechnology

(including Unilever, BASF, Smith&Nephew, Qinetiq Nanomaterials) ‘Start-up’ funded by UK Government (DTI) for 3 years March 2008: incorporation of NIA ltd (UK)* March 2009: incorporation of NIA aisbl (international, Belgium)*

NIA Activities Advising/working with federal & national legislative & executive administrations and policy-

informing bodies Policy/Regulation discussions Co-organisation of Trade Missions (e.g. with UKTI/UKFCO to Canada, US, Japan)

Advising the OCED (WPMN & WPN) through BIAC* Liaison status with standardisation bodies (i.e. BSI NTI/1; CEN/TC 352; (ISO/TC 229)) Proactive work with stakeholders:

promoting Applications & Benefits of Nanotechnologies engaging with Consumers

* OECD: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and DevelopmentWPMN: Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (i.e. part of the OECD initiative on ‘Chemical Safety’)WPN: Working Party on Nanotechnology (i.e. part of the OECD ‘Committee for Scientific and Technological Policy’) BIAC: Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD
