uropeans are exposed to low levels of a large num
berof endocrine disrupters w
hich can act in concert. Many of
these chemicals, drugs or natural products are found in
human tissues and in breast m
ilk. Hum
ans are exposedto these chem
icals from very early on in their lives w
henthe developing organism
can be particularly sensitive.•
The existing safety assessment fram
ework for chem
icalsis ill-equipped to deal w
ith endocrine disrupters. Testingdoes not account for the effects of sim
ultaneousexposure to m
any chemicals and m
ay lead to seriousunderestim
ations of risk.•
In view of the m
agnitude of the potential risks associatedw
ith endocrine disrupters, we strongly believe that
scientific uncertainty should not delay precautionaryaction on reducing the exposures to and the risks fromendocrine disrupters.
