Part 2 Read the text carefully. Edinburgh – A city with two faces If you're looking for a place to visit, it's time you plan to visit Edinburgh. The capital of Scotland is one of the most cultural cities in the world and combines age-old tradition with the flair of a modern metropolis and a countryside offering a unique atmosphere. This is a place where fans of Harry Potter immediately feel at home: soot-blackened and weather-beaten stone townhouses with high facades sit cheek-by-jowl along narrow pavements and crooked cobblestone alleyways. Towering above them on a rough vol-canic rock is the imposing medieval castle, the city's impressive landscape, visible far and wide from the surrounding hills. This marks the origin of a fascinating city which was founded in the middle of the seventh century as the Kingdom of Gododdin. Pleasantly Creepy Many legends surround the forgotten subterranean city of Edinburgh and the Vaults, some of which can also be visited on guided tours. These lead through the South Bridge Catacombs. The darkness, spiders' webs and musty smells give many visitor the creeps. You can also follow the trail of serial killers Burke and Hare. As Edinburgh became bigger and more important in the 18th century, its darker corners were home to the poorest of the poor. Their spirits are said to roam these places to this day. One such spirit is that of the Little Drummer Boy, whose story has also become a spooky legend. A long time ago there was suspected to be a passage beneath the old town. The only opening, however, was a small hole in the basement vault of the castle which was only big enough for a little boy to pass through. So that the adults could follow the passageway of the underground path along the surface, a little boy was sent down the hole with a drum and the instruc-tion to walk along the tunnel banging on the drum. After a while he fell silent, never to re-turn. Nobody knew what to do. Should they send another boy down the hole? What if he were to suffer the same fate? They couldn't risk it. The city government therefore decided to brick up the tunnel and leave the little boy to his fate. And yet to this day - so the leg-end goes - on quiet nights, a distant drumming can sometimes be heard near the Tron Kirk. lt should therefore come as no surprise that Edinburgh was where some of the original Harry Potter stories, with all of their ghosts, were written. Edinburgh also has a modern face, however: the New Town is home to parallel streets of Victorian elegance, modern office buildings and a lively business community. Along the main shopping street, Princes Street, with its Iong-established department store Jenners, the buildings were only built on one side of the road, maintaining clear views of the Old Town. Princes Street Gar-dens, a park which was originally set out in the 18th century on the bed of a dried out lake beneath the castle rock, is a place of peace and relaxation. Edinburgh is also home to many unique museums, most of which can be visited free of charge. The New Town is home to the 'National Gallery of Scotland' with the Old Masters, Impressionists and Scot-tish Art collections.

Part 2 Script (01:17 – 03:12) Testimony 1 My name is Rajinder Dulai. I came from Punjab in India. I came into Britain on 16th De-cember 1977 and landed at Heathrow Airport terminal 3. Immigration officers weren't that friendly but the whole excitement (sort of) overcame that unfriendliness from the immigra-tion officer and then we got out of the airport, and it was very chilly…very cold. Presenter: Although Rajinder clearly remembers the unfriendliness of the immigration officers, and the chilly winter weather, arriving in Britain was still an exciting experience for him.

Our next speaker arrived during the Spring, when the weather wasn’t quite as cold.

Testimony 2 Coming into London, I was a wee bit disappointed when I saw the buildings. Because I was not accustomed to such big buildings - looking so brown - everything looked alike. I was impressed with street traders as I passed. Beautiful flowers, because it was Spring. The Spring everywhere. But the houses...I didn't like the looks of them at all. Presenter: So Muriel’s first sight of London in the Spring was a pleasant experience,

particularly because of the flowers. But the buildings weren’t quite what she expected! She said they were “a wee bit” disappointing – a little bit disap-pointing, because she wasn’t “accustomed” to them… She wasn’t used to seeing so many big, brown buildings. And Muriel certainly wasn’t impressed by the look of the houses.

Part 3 Script (03:12 – 04:40)

Our next speaker settled in the north of England. She shares Muriel’s first impressions of the houses and also talks about the weather.

Testimony 3 My name is Ana Silvia Rodriguez. I'm Mexican. I have lived in England for the past 20 years. It was difficult at first in terms of the climate. I used to find Leeds very windy. Sometimes I couldn't even breathe because the wind was so strong. And I do still miss the sunshine of Mexico. It was the houses that I found also very different - with row after row of terraced houses. In the North of England we have lots of brick houses, particularly in a city like Leeds. I was used to greens and pinks and blues, and a big house with a small house. But in Eng-land, you find that houses are very similar to each other. Presenter: As we’ve heard, immigrants who’ve come from warm countries, like Mexico, sometimes find the climate – the weather - in Britain quite difficult to get used to. And like Muriel, Ana was surprised by the houses; she wasn’t accustomed to seeing rows and rows of brick ‘terraced houses’. A terraced house is one of a row of similar houses joined together by their side walls.
