.8 Sauti za Busara 2017 #AfricaUnited 9

It’s all about unity. Our theme this year is #AfricaUnited. Music connects: people to people, heart to heart. In a world that’s increasingly divided, music reaches across borders and brings us together.

Witness the power of music at Sauti za Busara, 100% live. At the same time, the festival creates employment, builds skills and livelihoods.

As always, a rich and diverse musical feast is promised. Strong women and independence are celebrated with top singer-songwriters from Guinea-Bissau, Seychelles, and Somaliland. The swirling and evocative sounds of Zanzibar taarab are fêted alongside African blues and hiphop pioneers, boy-bands and urban-ghetto sensations from mainland East Africa, conscious reggae vibrations from Morocco to Ethiopia, highlife and afrobeat masters from Ghana, electric and eclectic musical fusions aplenty - and more you will read about in these pages.

For these blessed and unique moments in February we stand proud in our diversity, united in music, together as one. Forget your troubles, feel the magic and be inspired.

With thanks for your support - and best wishes to all, welcome to Sauti za Busara 2017.

The starting point and first show of the festival is at Mnarani, near Michenzani Roundabout (approx 2km from the Old Fort).

From 3:00pm participants will begin to assemble and limber up. This is a good time for taking photographs - before the parade starts moving! Rich cultural identities against an urban backdrop.

Then, as a special treat this year, we kick off Sauti za Busara 2017 with a spectacular group of traditional drummers from Burundi.

In 2008, Misoji Nkwabi was a winner of Bongo Star Search, a nationwide singing competition in Tanzania. The same year, she recorded an album of her songs “Utu wa Mtu” (Dignity of a person). The album consisted of 12 songs carrying different themes, mainly social and health issues affecting young Tanzanians.

Misoji is grounded in choral music, performing from a young age with her family; her mother was an organ player in their church. Growing up, she started performing renditions of other artists at different venues. Music has always been her passion.

She formed Afrijam Band in 2014 and performed in festivals in Tanzania including Karibu Music Festival, Marahaba Festival and Bagamoyo Festival. In her band, she sings with her sisters Nsami and Nshoma.

Nkwabi worked with Mombots Production in film and musical performances in Germany in 2009. She is a performing and visual arts graduate from TaSUBa in Bagamoyo.

Bob Maghrib is a collective of musicians launched in 2011 who represent Morocco’s current music scene. The collective revisits Bob Marley’s most revolutionary, pioneering songs.

The collective’s approach to their style of music is to marry the rhythms and melodies of Bob Marley and the Wailers with the rhythms and melodies of Morocco. In this creative process great care is taken in order not to change or replace but merge the two cultures that are very close to their common African origin.

After touring Morocco, Egypt and Europe, the collective is working on their first album with their own compositions. The album will have a unique sound that connects North African music such as Gnawa and Berber with Jamaican rhythms.

They are resident performers at Cultural Arts Centre at Makumira. They have performed at various tourism events, including Kili Fair in Moshi, Karibu Tourism Tanzania in Arusha, and S!TE (Swahili International Tourism Exhibition) in Dar es Salaam, plus events for the Tanzania Tourist Board and the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators.

in Sweden. They had many successful cultural missions and were included in the list of Peter Gabriel’s favourite musicians, having recorded many times at his Real World Studios in UK.

Starting with 15 artists, the group has grown to 35 active members to date, mostly being close family members who are taught from an early age. The style of music has its roots

from the Gogo people of the Dodoma region who are famous worldwide for their unique vocal harmonies and instruments including marimba (balafon), zeze (Gogo two-stringed violin), irimba (pentatonically tuned thumb piano) and ngoma (different types of traditional drums). What makes Gogo music extra special is the singing which is so haunting and captivating - it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the language, the power is in its intensity of feeling. Also spectacular in Chibite’s performance is the dancing, mainly done by women, doing elegant shoulder and neck movements.

Chibite has performed regularly at WOMAD festivals and in many countries including Japan, Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, Germany, UK, Australia, France and Spain.

Cocodo plays an exhilarating blend of Afro beat fusion - laced with jazz and Tanzanian rhythms - in the traditional Panyenje style. And with the recent addition of 2 contemporary trained dancers, their live performances have been described as pulsating and euphoric!

Hailing from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Cocodo was formed in 2010. Their message is about giving back to society and creating awareness on different issues that affect Tanzanian communities, such as malaria, HIV and autism. They also sing about their beautiful homeland - MAMA AFRICA - and the joy of growing up in Tanzania! Their lyrics are in Swahili and other Tanzanian languages.

Instruments used include marimba, Tanzanian drums, West African djembe, guitars, keyboards, traditional flutes and zeze. The band has performed in various local and international

festivals such as ZIFF, and the recent Smart Partnership Dialogue in Dar es Salaam.

Cocodo is concerned to see that the number of young musicians learning and advocating for their African musical roots is diminishing. Most young people are either unaware of

Grace Barbé hails from the Indian Ocean islands of the Seychelles, where a colourful history of slavery, pirates, coups d’etat and coconuts have produced a unique Kreol rhythm, language and culture.

Drawing from the diverse cultural melange of the islands, Grace’s trio fuses the tropical rhythms and dances of the slaves with psychedelic rock, afrobeat, reggae and pop.

Conjuring a bewilderingly huge sound, the musical wavelength between bassist Grace and her younger sister Joelle Barbe (drums) must be seen to be believed. Guitarist Jamie Searle adds a dense layer of Afro - guitar sorcery.

Grace has been enticing audiences to get up and shake since the release of her debut album Kreol Daughter in 2009, with appearances all over India, the Indian Ocean region and Australia’s leading

music festivals, including Womadelaide, WOMAD New Zealand, Byron Bay Bluesfest and Woodford Folk Festival. Her band won the award for “Best World Act” six times in her current home state of Western Australia.

Passionately committed to showcasing and developing the Kreol culture with which she is so deeply connected, Grace is now on tour promoting her latest album 'Welele!'.

African-pop, urban-coloured vintage, uniquely comical, just to name a few of the words used to describe this versatile blend of artists Mordecai Kimeu, Kenneth Muya and Wachira Gatama.

The three met in the corridors of their acting careers in late 2012, where Mordecai auditioned Kenchez and Wachira for a play on cancer-awareness at the Kenya National Theatre.

During the rehearsal process the three discovered that they shared a similar passion for music, spoken word/poetry, comedy, dance, fashion and generally, life.

They later performed together for the first time a few months after this encounter at Dass Ethiopian Restaurant and H_ART the BAND was formed. Not long after, they joined Penya Africa’s prestigious artist development programme Sauti

Academy from which they graduated in April 2014.

Imagine acoustics, smooth vocals with a touch of poetry, spoken word, freestyle rap, drama, dance and fashion all blended into one thick pastry of art. That is what H_ART the BAND is all about.

H_ART the BAND’s music speaks to generations, being heavily inspired by day-to-day experiences.

With Mordecai and Wachira both being Slam Africa poetry kings, self-taught guitarist Kenchez compliments their rhymes with smooth, danceable tunes. Mordecai adorns their jams with his heavenly vocals and lyrics, while Wachira enlivens it with his witty spoken word/poetry.

By aligning their unwavering dedication to the do-it-yourself work ethic with a signature sound, this fusion thus creates

Mwananyamala close to Jolijo’s, their patron’s little house and restaurant.

When they need to rehearse new songs, they convene in Jolijo’s backyard to get it all down. Their performing weekend usually starts on Friday when they suspend the week’s hustle, relax during the daytime, and then play all night Mchiriku gigs at family celebrations such as

Internationally, Jagwa has performed at WOMEX, WOMAD, Roskilde Festival and more recently across the USA in a tour produced by Center Stage.

Consisting of nine artists, Jagwa Music are the leading exponents of the Mchiriku style, which originated 20 years ago in the poor suburbs of Dar es Salaam; when cheap Casio keyboards first became available.

Jagwa Music and their peers were immediately attracted by the Casio’s lo-fi sound, adopted one, hooked it to vintage amps and megaphones, and the resulting gritty, edgy, distortion-laden sound was christened Mchiriku.

This style has been thriving ever since in Tanzania, although it’s been deliberately ignored by the media, as it is associated with 'uhuni' (thuggery) and the city’s low life.

Jagwa Music have a large following around Dar es Salaam; almost everybody knows their songs, which relate to everyday issues. Many of their lines have become proverbial, and you can see quotes from their songs

painted as slogans on 'dala dalas' (local minibus taxis).

The songs often contain advice on how to survive in the city when you’re faced with unemployment, oppressive relatives, unfaithful girlfriends or husbands, AIDS, drugs and alcohol.

Jagwa’s members are all living the street life themselves, mostly working in Dar es Salaam’s cut-throat private bus-taxi business as 'dei-waka' (unlicensed drivers who jump in when another driver is caught by police, or does not make it to work). Others are 'manamba', who hustle customers into the buses for a few shillings in return.

By midday they will have made enough money to keep them going until the next morning, paying for food and some other enjoyments. In the afternoon they all meet at their 'maskani' (hangout) under a tree in

Karyna Gomes is a singer and songwriter who started at the age of 21 by singing gospel music in 1997 in São Paulo, Brazil, while she studied journalism.

Her passion for music came earlier as she grew up surrounded by musicians in Guinea-Bissau, listening to traditional and urban music of her country and also rhythms from around the world.

In 2005, she started her solo career in her homeland and the following year she participated at the CPLP Festival held in Bissau, where she sang alongside legendary artists such as Tito Paris and others from the Lusophone scene.

In 2007, she received an invitation to participate in the recording of Super Mama Djombo’s last album. She then toured with the group around the world, while following her developing solo career.

In October 2014, she released her debut solo album ‘Mindjer’ (woman). The album is a tribute to the Guinean women and those from around the world for their determination, strength and courage. It is an urban musical genealogy from Guinea-Bissau and the singer recalls traditional songs, urban classics and those she calls "my Guinean music."

'Mindjer' received excellent reviews from world music media and was was listed by the magazine BLITZ as one of the Top 10 albums of 2014.

Karyna performed at the Atlantic Music Expo 2015 held in Praia, Cape Verde, and at various world music festivals since.

Kyekyeku’s music derives from the traditional Ghanaian sounds of palmwine music, highlife and Afrobeat. With his guitar, Kyekyeku carries a distinctive Ghanaian sound and image.

Kyekyeku and his band of young musicians create a myriad of rhythmic grooves that ensure the dance floor is buzzing. His music looks more towards expressing Ghana and Africa through a sound and fashion aesthetic that pushes forward a vintage African renaissance.

Kyekyeku has been on tour across Africa and was a selected artist for MASA 2016, while the band has also performed in concerts in Europe and collaborated with world-renowned musicians including Peter White (UK/Jazz), Thais Morel (Brazil), Mayra Andrade (Cape Verde), and Blick Bassy (Cameroun).

"From a very cosmopolitan background in Accra, where most people of his generation end up doing Ghanaian pop or rap is Kyekyeku who has become an unlikely young man to have taken full fledge of this music form and made it his mainstay, playing in the traditional idiom as has been, but then also extending the frontiers further."

The band plays the babatone, a homemade instrument which is very popular in Malawi, and the four-string guitar, creating the traditional Malawi banjo sound.

The G Clef Taarab Orchestra aka G Clef Band or Matona’s Group was formed in 1995 after the privatisation of the Bwawani Hotel and subsequent break-up of the Bwawani Taarab Orchestra. As former director of the Bwawani Taarab Orchestra, Matona was asked by the musicians to continue by forming a new group, hence The G Clef Taarab Orchestra,

which at that time continued to perform traditional taarab music.

The band originally was composed of the Bwawani Taarab Orchestra musicians but once the older musicians left, Matona recruited new, younger musicians who needed training.

The G Clef Taarab Orchestra became the first music training centre for musicians in Zanzibar, taught by Matona to play mostly modern instruments. Its repertoire included modern and traditional taarab, Indian, Arab, African, rock, pop and ‘muziki wa dansi’.

The band became dormant in 2001 when Matona’s musical talents were diverted to teaching at Zanzibar’s Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA).

Perceiving the need for a band in Zanzibar that could perform a variety of musical genres, Matona reformed the group in 2015.

Pat Thomas is a Ghanaian vocalist and songwriter famed for his work in the highlife bands of Ebo Taylor and his own recordings of Afrobeat and Afro-pop.

Born in Agona, in the Ashanti Region, Thomas had music almost literally in his DNA: his father was a music theory instructor and his mother, a bandleader. His uncle was none other than legendary Ghanaian guitarist King Onyina, who was not only renowned for his own recordings, but for his pioneering work with Nat King Cole. Thomas went to live with his uncle for a time and learned musical notation. He also began to study guitar and play drums. He became a notable composer and as a teenager, established a reputation as a singer on the local club scene.

In the 1970s, he moved to Accra to join Ebo Taylor’s legendary highlife band The Blue Monks; their residency at the Tip Toe

Night Club is an important part of modern Ghanaian cultural history. In later years ,he moved to the Ivory Coast and produced various records in Afrobeat, Afro-Latin sounds and reggae melded to funky African disco.

In 1982, he moved to London and recorded Hitsville Revisited with Taylor and the guitarist’s band, Uhuru Yenzu. Thomas’ first hit outside Africa was Asanteman in 1985. He followed it with Highlife Greats Mbrepa a year later.

He played all over Europe during the following five years, recording for a series of labels. He moved to Canada in 1990, where he began teaching at university, in addition to playing and recording. Sika Ye Mogya was released in 1991 and won the Album of the Year award in Ghana. Thomas focused on his teaching for the next decade, though he did play summer festivals in Europe. His only other recording during the

It placed the singer in the company of a band assembled by multi-instrumentalist Kwame Yeboah and saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff. Other musicians included drummer Tony Allen, Noble Kings’ bassist

Ralph Karikari, and a host of younger players including Thomas’ daughter Nanaaya, a celebrated vocalist in her own right.

Zanzibari qanun player Rajab Suleiman is probably best known internationally as a featured soloist of Culture Musical Club, which together with Ikhwani Safaa established the legacy of the island's large taarab orchestras and social clubs.

A natural musician and untiring in his quest for musical knowledge, Rajab has moved beyond the frontiers of the taarab of old, becoming a virtuoso on this difficult instrument by studying the instrument’s classical Arabic and Ottoman roots, taking part in workshops in Egypt and playing with Palestinian virtuoso oud-player Habib Shehadeh.

More recently he has branched out to study Western classical music and jazz, adapting compositions from Bach to Monk to the qanun, all molded by his own Zanzibari and taarab music experience.

Kithara was formed in 2012 by Rajab: “New times demand new structures to advance artistic goals.” Feeling that their creativity was held up by the traditional club structure, they branched out on their own.

Besides composing and playing more conventional taarab songs and instrumentals that feature the group’s singers and instrumentalists, Kithara are generating a new repertoire by turning to the inspiration of Zanzibar’s many traditional ngoma dances, trying to marry the infectious rhythms and melodies to the group’s regular taarab instruments that besides qanun, also include oud, accordion, double bass and various percussion instruments.

In 2013 the group released Chungu: "A dazzling album. Gloriously and richly acoustic, with deft real-time interplay and magnificent singing." (Chicago Reader, 2015).

Just recently, up-and-coming new star Saada Nassor joined the group and in a short while has become the Island’s most talked about new singer. She grew up singing qasida in Quranic school and later become a member of her school’s choir. Prior to joining Kithara she has sung with a variety of Zanzibar’s modern taarab groups. Saada’s love however is with the old-school acoustic taarab: “In modern taarab everything is played at the loudest volume, and the singer has to go along in order not to be drowned out. The acoustic taarab and its

instruments allow me to express myself and to use my voice in a much more intricate manner.”

During 2016 Rajab Suleiman and Kithara performed their US debut with Center Stage. The shows featured Zanzibari singer Makame Faki and he will be make a special guest appearance for the show at SzB2017. Makame Faki is one of the doyens of Zanzibari taarab, having been a featured singer with Culture Musical Club for almost 40 years.

Please tell us how we are doing

Rashid Amin Abdallah aka Rico Single was born in Kikuu village, on Pemba island. He started music at primary school, as part of the school’s traditional dance group.

In 2001 together with friends, Rico Single created Swahili Arts Group which had more than 40

young members, performing traditional dances, acrobatics and zenji flava music.

In 2004 they had the opportunity to participate at the Bagamoyo Arts Festival, where they also attended workshops. In 2005 they released their first tracks “Fadhila za Punda” and “Hii Sanaa”, which were recorded at Baucha Records. Around the time of the general election during the same year, many of the group members diverted to other activities and Swahili Arts collapsed.

After the demise of Swahili Arts Group, Rico Single decided to go it alone as a solo artist and focus primarily on zenji flava music.

Rico Single’s rise to local fame began in 2006, when he released his first song entitled “Hili Game”, recorded at Heart Beat Records. The track generated significant airplay on Zanzibar radio and was well received. His follow up “Kasimama Peke

Yake” (He Stands Alone) quickly confirmed Rico Single as a force to be reckoned with in the local music scene.

At the first Zanzibar Music Awards in 2006, Swahili Arts Group’s single “Fadhila za Punda” won a prize.

Rico Single became better known after collaborating with other local artists including Berry Black, Shirko and Small x, with whom he released “Yaache Mambo ya Club” in 2007. More successful collaborations soon followed, featuring Kasim

Mganga in “Nitampataje” (2008), Sultan King in “Tuongee Kidogo” (2009), Baby J in “Wacha Waongee” and AY in Champagne (2010).

At Sauti za Busara 2015 festival in the Songs for Peace competition, Rico Single won the Bronze Award with his track ‘Amani ndio Furaha Yetu’ .

Born in Cameroon, Roland Tchakounté started his musical training with percussion followed by the guitar, piano and harmonica.

His music is the perfect merging between Mississippi Blues and the deep African roots of these songs, greatly enhanced by the harmonies of Bamiléké, his mother tongue.

Through his music, he talks about the downward spiral of a brutal world and of Africa, a continent from where there seems to come only bad news.

Roland Tchakounté looks up to many blues artists for inspiration including Elmore James and Muddy Waters, but regards John Lee Hooker and Ali Farka Toure as his real masters.

He has performed in almost every corner of the world, on stages in Belgium, Canada, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Lithuania, Croatia, France and in many African countries.

He released several albums over the years with the latest entitled ‘Ngueme and Smiling Blues’.

Sahra Halgan sings with a clear, uplifting voice in the traditional Somali style, which bears much in common with the music of Sudan and the Arabian peninsula. It is often accompanied only by handclaps, although for the last several years Halgan has been touring with French musicians Aymeric Krol and Mael Saletes in a style they call “World Music from Somaliland”.

Sahra escaped civil war in Somalia in 1993, becoming a refugee in France. People in the north part of what was then Somalia had rebelled against the brutal dictatorship of Siad Barre, splitting off to form what is now Somaliland in 1991.

“I started singing when I was 13,” she says. “Somalia was still at peace. Then to encourage fighters in the civil war, I became a nurse even though I didn’t have proper training to help

fighters who were attacked with airplanes and artillery. Singing isn’t only for fame or money, sometimes you can use music like medicine.”

Music had been suppressed by the Barre regime and Halgan’s songs were part of a wave of protest music. “My songs had the opportunity to play that role,” she says. “I sang for people fighting against the dictator. We had to go to the bush, and I would go to tents that were transformed into surgery rooms and encourage patients.”

With the collapse of Barre rule, Somaliland was able to forge a separate peace. Its rulers created democratic institutions and it currently enjoys a quasi-independent status, but the international community still treats it as part of Somalia.

After decades in France, in which she eked out a living as a cafeteria worker and musician,

a few years ago Halgan returned to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. There she opened a studio that is apparently the only place in the country where musicians and poets can produce their work. She notes with a laugh that she does weddings too, but her main focus is on bringing attention to her forgotten land.

“I wanted to show what’s going on in Somaliland, because the world forgets us, I don’t know why. We decided to live alone without Somalia, but they won’t accept that.

“My songs are political and personal,” she continues. “I ask,

‘Why do you forget us? We did everything the international community has asked.’

“I want the whole world to know there is a democratic, peaceful country called Somaliland. The world is forgetting four million people. It’s as if we don’t exist. It’s not just.”

Sarabi’s music is influenced by everyday happenings. They create a sound picture that vividly represents Kenyan society.

Sarabi was formed in 2005. In recent years they have proved to be one of the most respected Afro fusion bands in Kenya. The group includes eight young men from the Eastland’s slums of Nairobi. They started playing together when they were all aged around 11 years only. Together over the years they have managed to create one of the most solid bands in the Kenyan music scene.

Sarabi’s music is rooted in traditional rhythms such as benga, with a blend of Western sounds. In 2013 they released their first album, titled Oyaore, to rave reviews.

In 2014 they took Kenya by storm with Sheria. Juliani, the Kenyan hip-hop legend, collaborates on the track. Sheria

looks back at the maize scandal, the missing free primary education money, the Kazi kwa Vijana scandal and more.

The song also blames the Kenyan people for accepting bribes and bribing when it is convenient to do so. In his signature voice, towards the end of the song, Juliani says the tears of the perpetrators have drowned the blood of the victims, in reference to the post-election violence. He also mocks the commissions of enquiries formed over the years by saying they do not tell the truth. Finally, in regard to Westgate and in a unity call, Juliani says, ‘You are not my tribe, but you are my blood type. But it doesn’t have to take a tragedy to know that’.

Sarabi’s performances are legendary, generating excitement wherever they play. Within the last 2 years, SARABI has become one of East Africa’s most popular live bands, performing at Sauti za

Simba's love of hiphop started in the early '90s, listening to artists like De La Soul, Common and A Tribe called Quest. The art that combines words with rhythm and breakbeats was beginning to impact on this boy's life, and he began rhyming at the age of 13. From this point onward, the young rapper's thirst could not be satisfied and his will to innovate the local hiphop industry wasn't to be stopped.

Milton Gulli, a celebrated musician/producer in

Mozambique, started as a member of the successful underground band “Philharmonic Weed,” and has performed and recorded in Panama and Portugal. He is equally at home with acid jazz, funk, soul and hiphop.

Tausi Women’s Taarab presents a revolution in a very traditional genre: Zanzibar’s first all-female taarab orchestra where all the instruments are played by women and accompanied by women singers.

The Tausi Taarab orchestra was formed in 2009 and presents music in the tradition of classical taarab style. Dating back to the 1920s when Siti Bint Saad (widely recognised as the “mother of taarab”) recorded a large catalogue of Swahili songs, many talented women composers and singers have contributed to the development of Zanzibar’s most famous music style. However, even in the “women’s groups” during the 1960s it was only men who played the instruments. Tausi (meaning “peacock”) has changed this forever.

Since the group’s inception they have been invited to perform at various functions of the EU, the UN, opening of the “Women’s

Decade 2010-2020”, African Union, Ministry of Education in Zanzibar, Zanzibar International Film Festival, Bagamoyo Festival, as well as at private weddings and commercial functions.

Anyone who saw the group at their world premiere during Sauti za Busara 2010 can now be amazed at how far the young women have grown artistically and musically under the tutelage of Taarab stars Mariam Hamdani and Mohamed Ilyas.

Usambara Sanaa play the traditional music and dance of the Wasambaa called Mdumange. The Mdumange ngoma style is music for happy times. It is played at weddings, harvests, weekends, or public celebrations.

One of the factors that makes this style interesting is its interactive nature, whereby the audience is encouraged to join in the dance.

Instruments used include a small drum, which starts the show and continues as a supporting drum. Another six drums are played by one person, with aluminium tin sheets and whistles. Mdumange has one lead singer and others who dance and sing chorus.

Ze Spirits Band is a group of six young and talented musicians from Bagamoyo, aged 18 to 25.

The inspiration for their music comes from the vibes of Tanzanian local traditional dance, songs and rhythms, which are successfully blended with contemporary ideas to empower the groove and engage audiences (more fire!).

Ze Spirits have participated in various festivals including Bagamoyo Arts Festival, The Beat Festival, Karibu Music Festival, Barazani (Alliance

Francaise) and Chap Chap Events in Dar es Salaam.

Some of Ze Spirits study music at TaSuBa in Bagamoyo and others at DCMA in Zanzibar.

They came together when they were between 7-10 years old, under the direction of Tanzania’s legendary singer-songwriter Vitalis Maembe.

MEET THE ARTISTSSun 12 Feb, 2:00pm Monsoon Restaurant

Musicians often find themselves at the forefront of popular movements, or as a voice for people who are otherwise silenced. Realising artists’ power to influence political change, political or religious leaders often crack down on freedom of expression by censoring music. At the other end of the spectrum, in relatively ‘free’ societies, artists often push the limits of what is deemed acceptable, often at

the risk of offending sensitive listeners and/or the authorities. Understanding how to negotiate such issues is a concern for musicians in any country.

At this session, invited representatives from Government together with local and international artists speak specifically to the theme of Arts Censorship vs. Freedom of Expression.

The Dufu drumming and singing is usually done by men, but this group of women from Michenzani Madrassat started
