ForewordFor 50 years, the Austrian family-owned company Rieder with head-quarters in Maishofen in the province of Salzburg has been known as the leading specialist for innovative and effective solutions for the use of concrete as a building material. With the development of fibreC (an acronym of glassfibre and concrete) Rieder is writing a new chapter in the history of concrete. fibreC complements the full product range of Rieder by introducing a revolutionary material which meets the high-est requirements of modern architecture and interior design through its elegance and simple beauty.

Technical expertise as basis for innovative progress The success story of fibreC began in March 2004 with comprehensive fundamental research and a series of experiments with glassfibre-reinforced concrete. In the course of internet research Wolfgang Rieder came across the website of a factory in Kolbermoor, Bavaria, which worked with similar materials, but was about to be closed down. As the demand for glassfibre concrete was increasing continually and the main plant in Maishofen had already reached its maximum capac-ity, the Kolbermoor machines were acquired and converted for the fabrication of fibreC. Considerable time, effort and financial resources were invested before serial production finally began at the end of 2004 and fibreC was launched into the market.

Winner of many awards and represented worldwideAs a result of the widespread success of the first reference projects in Austria as well as the positive feedback from architects allowed Rieder to shift its attention abroad in January 2006. Rieder could expand its network of 25 partners in Europe, America and Australia. Numerous international awards such as the MIPIM AR Future Project Award in Cannes, the Form & Function Award in Australia and the Nomination for the Design Award 2009 of the Federal Republic Germany respect the quality and innovative strength of fibreC.

Extremes and dialoguesA constant dialogue with our customers, architects and designers is very important for innovations. Rieder never refrains from extremes and experiments and closely cooperates with designers and clients in the development of new textures, colours and unusual shapes. Development at Rieder is based on the construction of prototypes in accordance with the principle of learning by doing and the background of 50 years experience in concrete. Failed experiments also pave the way towards optimal concrete solutions. As opposed to many other companies that develop products which are unable to be customised, we talk with our architects first, listen to their wishes and require-ments and then get back to work.

At its Kolbermoor production site, Rieder proves that the state-of-the-art industrial production methods of the 21st century need not necessarily be in conflict with workmanship skills. With our concept of “industrial manufactory” we are able to unite seeming opposites like the custom-made manufacturing of a handicraft enterprise and the industrial demand of our time to achieve maximum production efficiency. This unique combination guarantees complete flexibility in the manufacturing of fibreC and allows us to fulfil the individual design criteria for our clients.

Industrial manufactory – opposites attract The technology and production processes of glassfibre concrete have been perfected for decades and tested practically for more than 30 years. A special extrusion process incorporates layers of glassfibre into a concrete matrix; in the top layer and underlayer the fibres are undirected and scattered, in the medium layer they take the form of rovings (fibre bundles). The omission of steel reinforcement allows the construction of “slim” concrete elements which are highly stress-able despite being extremely thin-walled. The result is an extremely thin slab with 8 to 13 mm thickness, which is very light-weight, yet has a high flexural strength. The slabs can be dyed in different colours before being hardened for 28 days.

Rooms flowing into each other Sandblasted or brushed surface finishes, coupled with the variety of iron oxide colours available, provide a wide range of different pos-sible designs. A special process also allows us to incorporate com-pany logos and patterns into the surface. Each manufactured part is unique in size, colour and surface finish, and its charm lies in the individuality of its design. Our company’s high level of flexibility and the direct contact with our customers make Rieder an indispensable partner in architecture and design. As fibreC can be used for all sur-faces, including walls, floors and ceilings, it becomes possible for the first time to overcome traditional boundaries of space and increase the flow of materials. The smooth transition from interior to exterior spaces made by fibreC creates a unique symbiosis of shapes, tex-tures and colours in the different areas of application. Interior and exterior spaces are merged into one, thus increasing the options for architects.

fibreC – A new value for concretefibreC, which is also known as “concrete skin” and has won interna-tional architectural awards - is a concrete panel reinforced with glass-fibres which combines the advantages of concrete and glassfibres in one product: it is as solid, mouldable and durable as concrete, but thanks to the glassfibres also thin-walled, fireproof and light-weight. Like a skin of concrete, it allows the construction of slim elements with a tensile strength. The extremely thin concrete slabs contribute to the new language of shapes.

Glassfibreconcrete – a safe material As a result of its robust properties and extreme durability, fibreC endures maximum load capacity at minimal thickness and enormous slab size. The material guarantees absolute fire safety thanks to its excellent thermic values providing temperature stability up to 350° Celsius. fibreC easily passed tunnel fire tests with temperatures of over 1200°C. Rieder is the only European manufacturer of materials made of concrete suitable for high-rise buildings with a height of 100 meters. In addition, fibreC has passed the ETA test (European Techni-cal Approval) and can thus be used for buildings with a height of up to 300 m, if designed accordingly.

SustainabilityThe use of high-grade raw materials consisting of purely mineral substances and glassfibres guarantees optimum product quality. Due to our commitment to environmental protection, the amount of re-used materials is increasing. As fibreC is based on purely organic substances, as opposed to most other products available on the mar-ket, the material can be completely recycled. Moreover, economic efficiency and sustainability are further enhanced by the low use of resources. Our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility towards our environment are also confirmed by our international envi-ronmental management certificate ISO 14001. We set ourselves high standards in environmental protection and use innovative technolo-gies with ecological responsibility.

The diversity and high performance of fibreC allows cost-saving con-structions of high quality, cutting-edge aesthetics and long-term durability. fibreC is an authentic material in line with the current trend towards natural, environmentally-friendly, sustainable and cost-efficient materials that achieve an aesthetically appealing and modern effect.

The use of fibreC in professional bread and pizza ovens and the strict tests and food certificates required for such applications provide a unique testimony and health certificate for the ecological quality of fibreC. You will find an excerpt of certificates on the environmental sustainability of fibreC in the section „Tests and Certificates“.

Endless possibilitiesAs an additional service for our customers we are able to fulfil custom requirements with regard to colours and surface finishes. A wide range of natural colour shades and sandblasted or polished surface textures enhance the modern effect of glassfibre reinforced concrete. The best effects can be achieved in interior design.

Colours are the smile of natureBy using genuine natural stone with iron-oxide pigments, our products resemble natural colours to the smallest detail; the result is “tech-nological marble“ without coating. The process using iron oxide pig-ments fulfils our sustainability requirement. The authentic colours of concrete skin blend perfectly into the existing landscape and commu-nicate with nature and the environment. Recycled materials from local stone pits can be used as a basic of the fibreC concrete matrix. One of the most fascinating colours is “liquide black“, a deep rich black pro-duced with unique copper stone, where genuine oxidised copper dots sometimes gleam through the surface.

Signs of life of a natural materialVivid structures with an interplay of changing colour shades and some cloud effects, rather than dead and clinical surfaces, are character-istic of fibreC. Differences attract and are understood as what they are – a typical characteristic of a natural building material.

Colour fastness and UV stabilityThe liquid colours comply with DIN EN 12878 and are perfectly suitable for dying cement-bound building materials. The pigments used in the liquid colours are UV stable and weatherproof and not soluble in water, alcaline solutions and diluted acids.

Colour variations reserved. For exact colour specification and matching original fibreC samples must be used.

Architecture engages with the interaction between contrasts and often creates a new reality from fantasies. To do so, new mediums with regard to contours, colours and textures of surfaces must be possi-ble. With fibreC elements, architects have a product at their disposal which allows these visions to be realised. fibreC facade panels exist to cover buildings like a skin made of concrete - opening entirely new possibilities for modern ventilated wall design. Concrete skin cladding gives buildings a new aesthetic appearance and reclaims concrete in the form of glassfibre-concrete for modern facade wall design.

Concrete Skin – a facade cast in one piece With very few production limitations with fibreC cladding panels, the product provides countless new options for the implementation of a great variety of organic and creative new shapes. The compact and flexible skin adjusts to any shapes used in buildings – be it curves or straight lines, slanting or straight walls, roofs or wall surfaces – there are no limits to creativity and creative implementation. Interior and exterior surfaces fuse into one spatial unit. The simplicity of shapes and materials reveals the essence of the facade design and enhances the effect of materials in their pureness. Concrete skin can create the impression of a building that has been cast in one piece.

Concrete has never been more versatileConcrete skin perfectly unites design ideas and materiality, convinc-ing those who view it in both interior and exterior applications. fibreC is suitable for wall, ceiling and floor coverings. Apart from the use of fibreC for facades, the combination of fibreC with fibreStair on exterior surfaces plays an important role. You will find more information about fibreStair in the section “special applications”.

Public Sector Buildings and InfrastructureAs a result of its extremely high bending tensile strength fibreC pan-els are vandalism-proof and thus excellently suited for public spaces and infrastructure. The good static and mechanical properties pro-vide optimal protection against vandalism. Moreover, the extremely smooth and dense surface of fibreC panels allow them to be soil-resisting and easy to clean. The resistance of concrete skin is con-firmed by the fact that fibreC conforms with the ballistic testing in accordance with DIN 18032.

Extraordinary and practically indestructible Projects such as the Metro Station St. Pancras in London, the Metro Station Schottenring and the Railway Station North in Vienna dem-onstrate, that fibreC panels are ideally suitable as vandalism-proof cladding for sensitive public areas such as train stations. Hydropho-bation treatment provides optimal protection against the challenges of everyday life. Due to their scratch resistance and surface durability the panels show no signs of abrasion even in areas highly frequented by pedestrians. Moreover, a special anti-graffiti coating can be applied to fibreC panels – a disappointment for graffiti sprayers and hobby painters and therefore fibreC is very suitable for public areas.

Ventilated Facade The ventilated rainscreen cladding (VRC) system is characterised by a constructive separation between insulation and outer cladding. Since the air cavity regulates the temperature of the building, the ventilated façade has various of advantages concerning building physics and economics:

Condensation water on the room facing surface depends on inadequate insulation.

This problem is prevented by the heating protection of the VRC façade. Internal con-

densation water results from a defective transfer of condensation, which depends on

the construction of the façade. The comparison of the diffusion diagrams indicates

that at ETICS condensation occurs within the insulation. In contrast, the VRC enables

full protection against condensation.

Aufbau / Construction · fi breC-Fassadentafel / fi breC panel · Aluminium-Unterkonstruktion / Aluminium subframe · Hinterlüftung / Ventilation · Dämmstoff / Insulation · Mauerwerk / Brickwork

Studies of driving rain protection prove, that 94,5% of the rain is removed by running down the back-side of the panels, whereas external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) are 100% exposed to the rain. The remaining penetrating moisture drains off or evaporates. The insulation remains dry and in proper function. Structural damage like cracking or mould issues can be avoided.

InteriorSince we spend the largest part of our lives in interior spaces, the requirements to individual and functional interior design and healthy living conditions have increased tremendously. Concrete skin can fulfil any wishes, and as a result of its unique properties, fibreC is a most attractive material for interior spaces as well. The application of concrete in interior spaces opens completely new and undreamed-of dimensions.

Change of perspectiveOld types of concrete have become outdated in many areas. fibreC and our interpretation of concrete, offer completely new and undreamed-of dimensions of the application of concrete in interior spaces. Mod-ern and puristic at the same time, concrete skin blends perfectly into interior spaces and lends them a pleasant, warm and homelike atmosphere thanks to the diversity of colours and textures. Open and closed shapes manufactured of fibreC create calmness and clarity at the same time. The interaction of fibreC with glass, wood, metal and other materials makes a significant contribution to intelligent material mixing of the future.

SpecialMouldable and aesthetic fibreC is a high-strength, thin, flexible and mouldable material and can be used for flat, curved and all kinds of special shapes. Owing to the unparalleled mouldability of glassfibreConcrete panels, its unrivalled slenderness and the entire production system as such, fibreC can be used for the most extraordinary applications. The formation of closed corners and curves in one continuous piece and with uniform robust-ness opens up new perspectives for wall construction and interior design. Formed parts and 2D elements are custom-made to achieve flowing transitions from interior to exterior surfaces and a smooth covering for edges.

Light and Concrete at the TriennaleEmbedded in a context of material, economy and design, Rieder con-tributes to culture as well. fibreC and light projects are the undeniable celebrities, that coexist in the same environment to express durability and contrast: white and black, light and dark, full and empty, male and female...Also with the project central park – which won the renowned LEAF (Leading European Architects Forum) Award in 2005 – fibreC has found its way into urban situations. The elements of the central park line can be installed individually in public spaces in many different variations. What is demonstrated by central park as prototype, can be applied to the solution of many other individual problems. Formed parts used as cladding for support pillars or corner elements can be produced economically, even though each piece is custom-made and without mitres.

Formed Elements With a specially developed process, U-shapes, arches and other geo-metric shapes can be manufactured using fibreC panels. Preformed parts are only available with a thickness of 13 mm and with the sur-face ferro and have the same product properties and advantages as concrete skin. Standard angle formats are in stock; special shapes and round arches are more time-consuming in their production and thus have a longer delivery time.

[fibre C] Oven tray

As glassfibreConcrete is made of purely mineral raw materials, it is environmentally-friendly and thus entirely unobjectionable in terms of health. As a result of the high thermal conductivity of fibreC, tempera-ture losses can be avoided and the heat is distributed evenly across the tray. Due to its exceptional thermal stability up to 350°C, fibreC oven trays are used in industrial ovens and large-scale bakeries all over the world.

fibreC oven trays from our production are of course free of asbestos and available for all kinds of ovens. Our oven trays have passed all tests and certificates regarding food safety and security. fibreC is also ideally suitable as baking stone for home use.

[fibre C] Backplatte
