.212Becher

Resonators

Resonators are either cylindrical or conical, orare formed from a combination of these twoforms. Other ‘’special’’ shapes are usually foundonly in baroque reeds such as Regals, etc.

Tin and lead alloys are the most suitablemetals for resonators. Details of our standardalloys can be found on page 11.1.

We can supply hammered lead sheetsconsisting of 5% tin, 94% lead, and 1%copper and antimony.

We can also produce sheets of tin-lead alloysand hammered lead sheets which are taperedin thickness. In this way, resonators and pipescan be made stronger at the base and thinnerat the top.

Zinc, copper, brass, and assorted kinds of woodare also suitable materials for resonators.

The choice of materials is determined by thedesired tonal characteristics, structuralconsiderations, and cost factors.

Most commonly today, resonators and blocksare joined with epoxy. This high-quality joint isoften stronger than a traditionally solderedseam. However, upon request, we still providedsoldered joints at additional cost.

Ausführung/Version A Ausführung/Version B Ausführung/Version C„Kopf“ „Nuss“ „Doppelkopf““block“ “french block“ “french block with ring“

Blocks, French blocks or Frenchblocks with rings

These are made almost exclusively of 25 %tin-lead and antimony alloys. Rarely are theyconstructed of wood.

Version ALarge reed pipes whose resonators do not needfurther support are provided with simpleblocks. These have a rim on top and arerecessed on the bottom so that the shallots arebetter supported.

Version BFrench blocks provide additional support forthe resonators of Trompettes, Cromornes, VoixHumaine, etc., by means of lengthened boots. They can be used for full-length trumpetsfrom 4' c upwards. For Cromornes and similarresonator shapes, long boots are used from 8'c upwards.

Version CWhere simple French blocks cannot be usedowing to the narrow diameters of resonators(e.g., Hautbois, Schalmei, etc.), they aresupplemented by rings and longer boots, thusachieving the necessary support.

Tuning wiresThese are of tinned bronze which does notoxidize as readily as brass and also has theadvantage of better springing characteristics.Wires can also be made of German silverwhich is even more resistant to oxidation.German silver wires are often used in France, and also with wooden blocks. Please specifywhich type is desired.

Tuning wires of voiced pipes are bent at a rightangle at the upper end for ease of tuning.Upon request, we can supply the French typeof tuning wires which have a notch filed intothem.

WedgesWe have found that semi-round wedges gripmore firmly than rectangular wedges. Theycan be made of teak or hard fibre. Teak is thebest wood for wedges since changes intemperature and humidity have little effect. The disadvantage of teak is that small wedgestend to wear out if they are frequentlyremoved and replaced. For this reason, sparewedges are supplied with each stop. This is notnecessary for large wedges.Upon request, we can provide phenolic fibrewedges.

Shallots

Brass shallots of all types are made by usaccording to our own scales or for scalesindicated. Wooden shallots made of grenadillaor ebony can be provided also. The characterof the sound however, will be noticeably diffe-rent than that of brass shallots.Brass shallots are divided according to theirshapes into 2 groups, i.e. cylindrical, alsocalled parallel, and tapered.

Cylindrical or parallel shallotsThe most well-known type of these shallots asdescribed by Clicquot and Dom Bedos, is theFrench shape. Cavaillé-Coll refined thesedesigns and they are now in general use in in-ternational organ building. Apart from thetypical shape, the most essential feature ofthese shallots is, that they are made of onepiece. In our production we distinguish thefollowing types.

NoteThe designations „Bertounèche“, „Clicquot“, and „DomBedos“ have been chosen for better understandingand are not absolutely identical with historicalpatterns.

Cylindrical or parallel shallotswith bottom pieces soldered on

These shallots differ from French type shallotsin that they are made in two pieces, thebottom piece being soldered to the lower endof the tube. By varying the bevel of the bottompiece from 45 to 90 degrees, or other angles inbetween, these shallots become useful inmany tonal applications.

.1212Konische deutsche Kehlen

Tapered German shallots

The notabel feature of these shallots is thatthey are made of thick sheet brass, withouttin, lead or brass overlays. The slots can bekept narrow and they will accommodaterelatively wide reed tongues. We recommendthat the treble shallots be made either open orof cylindrical shape. The shallot ends areusually closed by bottom pieces of brasssoldered on.

12Tapered shallots according tohistorical construction(Schnitger)

These shallots are scaled very large and havewide reed tongues. In the bass pitches theyare overlaid with lead, tin or brass. The slotscan be modified, the rims being made widerthan cylindrical shallots.

The shallot ends are either closed by bottompieces of brass soldered on, or in unusualcases by lead stoppers. The treble shallots are open.

English or pointed shallotsThese are made of thick brass sheets like theGerman shallots, but differ from them in thatthe taper is wider and the slots are shorter.

French tear shallots (à larme)The name comes from the slots which havethe shape of a tear drop. They are made intosoldered brass overlays of one piece.

Tin-lead shallotsThese shallots are cast in one piece of tin-leadalloy (20% tin, 69% lead, 11% antimony),which is a relatively hard material andtherefore quite suitable. In addition, to preventbending from the constant tension of thetuning wire, the body of the shallot is madethicker at the top. The outside diameterincreases in a ratio of 1: 35. The inside shapeof the shallots is slightly tapered in a ratio of 1:100 due to casting requirements. The castings are dimensioned so that a broadrange of applications can be accommodated, from a Fagott 32' or Posaune 16' to narrow-scaled manual reeds.

Tin-lead shallots may be orderedwith teardrop openings,in the style of Silbermann (Type I),or with parallel open slots (Type II).

BootsMetal boots(boots made of tin-lead alloy)Our standard boots are made from 25% tin-lead alloy, soldered and slightly conical.

The tips are coned-in, making them verystrong.

Large scale resonators and shallots, or specialconstructions, might require the use of largerblocks or French blocks. Narrow windchestscaling may require the use of smaller blocks.

12Wooden boots(boots made of wood)For Posaune and other heavy bass resonators, wooden boots are preferable. These are madeentirely of wood and are provided with aregulating device. Paper membranes, whichwere used for a long time, are rarelynecessary, and if required, can be replaced byleather membranes.

Wooden boots are available in varnishedMahogany or Pine. Upon request, they can bemade from other varieties of wood, such asoak, at an additional charge.

For 32’ and 16’ reeds, boots can be suppliedwith mortised bungs to provide access to thereed without removing the resonator.

In anderen Holzarten, z.B.

Multi-bored reed bootsInstead of having an individual boot for eachpipe, many reed pipes may fitted into a singleblock of laminated wood. These „shared boots“are provided with individual regulating devicesfor each note. The boring for each reed block isfelted.

Posaune 16’With metal resonatorsConstructionBuilt according to version A

Since resonators of tin and lead alloys raisethe price of this stop significantly, copper orzinc can be used for more economy.

If there is not enough height available, theresonators of the bass pipes can be made inhalf length or can be mitred. At least for the lower pitches wooden bootsshould be used due to the great weight. Metalboots can also be used.

Restorations have proved to us that even bootsof alloys with a high percentage of tin willyield to the pressure and collapse at the tip.

The tapered type of shallots is preferred. Theuse of shallots with a leather strip or a tinoverlay often results in a better tone.

Posaune 16'Mit MetallbechernBauartNach Ausführung A

.2812Posaune 16’ or 8’ = Holzposaune

With wooden resonators.

Resonators can be built of spruce/fir, pine, oakor mahogany and be either square or rectan-gular in cross section depending on the spaceavailable. They are made without socketingand are milled with a cone shape at the baseto fit securely into a corresponding boring inthe block. When using wooden resonators it is recom-mended that, for strength, the boots also beconstructed of wood. Leathered shallots canbe provided for Posaune 16’ to enhance thefundamental tone. We can also make woodenblocks and shallots if desired. The pipes can bemade with slot or flap tuning, or when voicing, can be cut to exact pitch. The back walls ofour resonators are vertical thus allowing foreasier racking and bracing.

A custom plan of the dimensions for thelayout of the wooden reed pipes can beprovided on your specific needs.

.3212Fagott 16’ or 8’ = Holzfagott

With wooden resonators.

Resonators can be built of spruce/fir, pine, oakor mahogany and be either square orrectangular in cross section depending on thespace available. They are made withoutsocketing and are milled with a cone shape atthe base to fit securely into a correspondingboring in the block. When using woodenresonators it is recommended that, forstrength, the boots also be constructed ofwood. Leathered shallots can be provided forPosaune 16’ to enhance the fundamentaltone. We can also make wooden blocks andshallots if desired. The pipes can be made withslot or flap tuning, or when voicing, can be cutto exact pitch. The back walls of ourresonators are vertical thus allowing for easierracking and bracing.

A custom plan of the dimensions for thelayout of the wooden reed pipes can beprovided on your specific needs.

.6212Trompetenmusette 8’

Trumpet Musette 8’

This stop generally meets the requirements ofa reed stop for the Ruckpositiv, the Oberwerkor for smaller organs, where a Trumpet wouldbe too powerful and a Schalmey would havetoo few harmonics. The harmonics of the Trumpet Musette fromthe fifth partial on up are fairly powerful, andthe basic tone is distinct, but not too strong. This stop produces a clear, trumpetlike toneand can be used for both solo and „en cham-ade“ organs.
