It has been my privilege to see Year 10 students engaged in some reflective work in response to a very successful first assessment in Biology, to watch Year 7 RS students discuss how they might respond to a decision to discriminate against blonde haired students, which led to a very powerful debate about the merits of peaceful protest and an exploration into the study of the actions of Gandhi. Year 9 have been studying the tropical rainforests in Geography and have constructed very clear arguments about why their survival is so crucial to this planet and Year 11 artists have been reflecting on their visit to the National Gallery and have produced some stunning initial sketchbook pieces in response to that inspiring trip. These snapshots provide some idea of the eclectic experiences of our students on a daily basis and it was terrific that even at the end of a long half term, the vast majority of students have been engaged, focused, enjoying their learning and taking great pride in their written and oral work. My thanks, once again, to our Year 7 students who proved to be superb ambassadors for our school whilst providing tours on our final Open Morning and to the many students in all year groups who have represented the school so successfully in sporting fixtures this week. Achievement points and HT Commendations have been awarded in significant numbers over the last fortnight reflecting the fact that so many students are meeting our expectations of being #RoseberyProud. Can I gently remind you to do a uniform audit this half term; several students are without the correct school shoes currently, or are wearing hoodies instead of a blue or black coat. Thank you for your support with this. Finally, huge thanks to the PSA for running the film night fundraiser this evening and to Mr Waight, Mr Harvey, Miss Lowe and Miss Glazebrook who travel to New York and Washington with our Sixth Formers today, for what promises to be a fabulous half term week away. Have a lovely half term break. Ros Allen @RoseberyHT

Over the last two weeks we have held our open classrooms initiative where we encourage teachers to use some of their non-contact time to visit lessons, in or out of their department. Year 7 Author Visit

On the 22 September Amy Alward came in to see year 7 to tell us about her Potion Diaries trilogy

and her experiences as a writer. We also had the chance to buy the books and get them signed.

Amy Alward was born in the UK but grew up in Ottawa, Canada. She studied Old English and

Medieval Literature at the University of Toronto. In 2015, the first of the Potion Diaries series

was released, the second in 2016 and the third book this year. The books have now been

published in eight languages around the world.

Amy first talked to us about her spellbinding recipe for a book. It was interesting to find out how she writes

her books and what she does if she gets writers’ block. She told us that a lot of her inspiration comes from her travels

and experiences. Amy also said that when she started High School, she didn’t like reading or writing until her parents

read her a particular mystery book. One night they left it on a cliff-hanger and they said if she wanted to find out more

she would have to read it herself. And she did! She enjoyed it so much that she continued to read and write.

Amy then told us about her books: they are about potion mixers (alchemists), normal people (ordinaries) and magic

holders (talented). All of these live in the modern world with social media but also magic. The main character

(Samantha Kemi) is an alchemist and when Princess Evelyn is poisoned by her own love potion and put in mortal

danger, she is called to join the Wilde Hunt. The Wilde Hunt is a contest where alchemists compete to make a potion

to save the royals. Unfortunately, Samantha is up against Emilia Thoth (the banished sister of the King) and every

second the pressure of the Princess in love with herself is weighing down on her. Can Samantha do it without her

Grandad – one of the greatest living alchemists? You’ll have to read it to find out!

Charlotte Tame 9EX represented Rosebery at the South East Schools Biathlon regional qualifying event in Gillingham on Saturday 14 October 2017.

Charlotte swam 200m, winning with a huge PB (Personal Best), beating the girl in second place by a massive 8 seconds and she also ran 1,600m.

Charlotte did fantastically well and came 2nd in her age group. Well done Charlotte!

Art Department News

This week in the Art Department we started life drawing classes with Year 11 and Sixth Form Art students. The students

made a fantastic start showing an impressive ability to focus for two hours after school on such a challenging activity.

The dates coming up in the calendar are:

Tuesday 31 October, Tuesday 14 November, Tuesday 21 November, Tuesday 28 November and Tuesday 12 December

We could still accommodate a small number of additional students, so please get in touch if interested – those not

studying Art are welcome.

We are on our real push towards final pieces for the GCSE course in Year 11 – students will be working in Art on

Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 November to produce these pieces. In the meantime, if it would be helpful for Art students

to use the department’s facilities, supervised sessions will take place in R13 on a Monday and Wednesday (3-5pm)

Mrs Rundle, Head of Art

Half Term Activity - time to sort through those wardrobes!

An easy way for the PSA to raise funds for the school is through our Second Hand Clothing and Toy initiative.

For every 1kg of items donated, we are given 40p. As a guideline, a typical outfit for a girl (shoes, trousers/skirt, jumper, T-shirt, packed into a rucksack/hand bag) would raise about £1. If all 1440 students were able to bring in an outfit which doesn't fit them anymore, we could raise an amazing amount of money for the PSA! There are always clothing recycling bins positioned by the back gates to the school, or students can hand in donations at any time to Reception labelled ‘ATTN: PSA’. Every first TUESDAY of the month, the recycling bins will be positioned by the front and back gates to receive donations.

Our next official collection date is TUESDAY 31 OCTOBER. Please do encourage your household to provide at least one bag of recyclable items. There is a poster included in this newsletter outlining exactly which items are acceptable - clothes, shoes, jewellery, toys (no books), bags, towels, etc.

Thank you so much in advance for your support. All funds raised go towards providing additional resources for our students.
