Grooves von A bis Z ist eine Zusammenstellung von26 verschiedenen afrikanischen und lateinamerika-nischen Rhythmen. Es war meine Absicht, die poly-rhythmische und melodische Essenz dieserEthnorhythmen in möglichst komprimierter Formdarzustellen.

Das moderne Schlagzeug bietet hervorragendeMöglichkeiten, mehrere Rhythmen gleichzeitig zuspielen. Persönlich finde ich es sehr spannend,Perkussionsinstrumente zu imitieren und aus die-sen Bausteinen komplexe Grooves zu entwickeln.Das schult die Koordination und die Fähigkeit,mehrere Rhythmen gleichzeitig zu hören und zuspielen. Und man kommt auf andere Ideen ! Diemelodischen Möglichkeiten des Schlagzeugs sindzugegebenermaßen eingeschränkt aber nicht gleichnull. Deshalb finde ich es wichtig, diesen Aspektdes Instrumentes maximal auszunutzen. Groovesvon A bis Z gibt hierfür viele Beispiele.

Bei der Auswahl der Grooves bin ich so vorgegan-gen, dass ich konsequent jedem Buchstaben desAlphabetes einen Rhythmus zugeordnet habe. Daserscheint zunächst etwas ungewöhnlich, hatjedoch den Vorteil, dass man auch einige rechtexotische Rhythmen berücksichtigt. Bei einigenBuchstaben musste ich schon eine Weile suchen,bis ich fündig wurde. Generell habe ich wenigbekannte Ethnogrooves bevorzugt, weil mir diesspannender erschien als auf Altbekanntes zurük-kzugreifen. Man findet aber auch einige weit ver-breitete Rhythmen wie Songo, Rumba undComparsa.

Diese hübsche kleine Sammlung interessanterGrooves aus dem Bereich der Ethnorhythmen gibtes als Gratis-download nur auf meiner Website. Ichmöchte jedoch in diesem Zusammenhang auf einProjekt hinweisen, für das ich Unterstützung benö-tige:Unter der Rubrik Cabo Verde berichte ich ausführ-lich von meinen derzeitigen Aktivitäten auf denKapverdischen Inseln, der erstmaligenDokumentation der verschiedenen Rhythmen inSchrift, Bild und Ton. Das Projekt zieht jedochimmer weitere Kreise und hat mittlerweile auchAuswirkungen auf bildungspolitischer Ebene. Aufden Kapverdischen Inseln gibt es so gut wie keinenorganisierten Musikunterricht. Das war in derVergangenheit auch nicht notwendig weil dieMenschen in Ermangelung andererFreizeitaktivitäten eben gemeinsam musizierten.

Grooves from A to Z is a compilation of 26 afro-and latinamerican rhythms. The intention was toshow the polyrhythmic and melodic essence ofthese traditional rhythms in compressed and shortexercises.

The modern drumset is an excellent tool for play-ing more than one rhythm simultaneously.Personally, I like to imitate the rhythms of percus-sion instruments on the drumset and to combinethese elements in complex grooves. This approachis very beneficial for the drummers coordinationand his ability to hear and play different rhythmsat the same time. And it gives you fresh ideas !The melodic possibilties on the drumset are limi-ted but not non-existent. Therefore, I find it veryimportant to develop this aspect of drumming asfar as possible. Grooves from A to Z gives thedrummer many examples for this.

I choose the rhythms by assigning them to the let-ters of the alphabet. At first glance, this appearsstrange but the advantage is, that you have toinclude also many not so well known rhythms. Forsome letters, it was not at all easy to find aninteresting rhythm. As a rule, I preferred littleknown rhythms. This appeared to me more intere-sting then to fall back on standard rhythms.Nevertheless, the drummer will also find somepopular rhythms like songo, rumba and comparsa.

It is our aim to documentfor the first time all the traditional rhythms of theislands.Meanwhile, this project has also stimulated discus-sions about the situation of musical education onthe islands. In former times, people joined forplaying music together because there were littleother possibilities for recreational activities.Nowadays, even in Cape Vert they have televisionand computer games and the old ways of culturaltransmission seem to fade. The department of cul-ture knows about this situation and is concerned,too. However, Cape Vert is a poor country andthere is little money left for cultural and/or edu-cational projects.In São Filipe, the capital of the island of Fogo,there is a public school with more than a thousand
