DuAl lEADErsHip fOr HEiMtExtilThe textile industry, with its constantly increasing trade flows all over the world, is one of the most highly globa-lised industries worldwide. A stronger presence in the market is therefore absolutely essential. To meet this goal, Heimtextil has had two directors since 1 December. The home textiles sector is led by Ulrike Wechsung. She has now been joined by Meike Schad who is now responsible for the house textiles sector. Until now Meike Schad was a team leader in the textile trade fairs division.

    „Connecting worlds“ an

    den Start. Und das Motto

    ist Programm: Denn

    keine andere Fachmesse

die einzige Fachmesse, die die Branche der

    Wohn- und Objekttextilien weltweit wider-

spiegelt. Top Fair sprach mit Detlef Braun,

    Geschäftsführer der Messe Frankfurt.

The motto of Heimtextil 2009 is “Connecting

Worlds“. This motto clearly reflects the

character of the trade fair. After all, no

other trade fair for household and contract

textiles captures the essence of this motto

as well as Heimtextil in Frankfurt am Main.

With international exhibitors from all over

the world and trade visitors from over 100

different countries, it is the only trade fair

which faithfully mirrors the household and

    S

Nachhaltigkeit und Wachstum im FokusFocus on sustainability and growth

Mr Braun, Heimtextil 2009 is focusing on sustainability. Why is this theme so important for the textile industry?

The manufacture, marketing, consumption and disposal of textiles is a good example of how the world economy has become increasingly integrated and what political, economic, cultural and, above all, ecological effects this is having. That is why sustainability is one of the central themes of Heimtextil. With a series of lectures entitled “Let’s talk about it!“ in hall 8.0 we want to encourage an exchange of ideas between manufacturers, distributors and designers on the latest developments in this innovative area.

Will you also be encouraging young talent at this year‘s Heimtextil?

The encouragement of young talent is indeed one of our major concerns. In addition to the “Young Contract Creations Award: Upholstery“ design prize which was launched last year, we are now also presenting a “Young Contract Creations Award: Wall“. The focus is thus now also on the theme of wall design (indoors and outdoors) across the various product groups, with the emphasis on both functionality and design, for the contract textiles sector. Furthermore, colleges and univer sities from all over Europe are once again presenting “innovative ideas and new creations from the professionals of tomorrow“ in hall 1.1 in cooperation with “rooms for free e.V.“ from Chemnitz.

How are you presenting the growing contract textiles market?Over the past few years the contract textiles business has

de veloped into one of the major textile markets of the future. It holds enor-mous growth potential. These developments have been taken into account in “Contract Creations“. For added support Heimtextil has also published a Contract Guide which lists more than 300 exhibitors of contract textiles and showcase projects, produced a special carpet inlay which identifies the stands of these exhibitors at the trade fair, and created the online-plat-form www.contact-contract.com.

The trend table has two new participants. Instead of four, there are now six trend themes. Can you tell us something about that?

This year the trend table members from France, Italy, Holland and Germany have been joined by the Japanese design company DAN Project and The Future Laboratory from the UK. Using “Expect the Unexpected” as their motto, these trends are being presented in the Forum. The Trend Show provides trade visitors with an overview of some reinterpretations of the tried and tested, and various unexpected results. This year‘s array of innov ations has been channelled into six trends. The Trend Show in the Forum gives visitors an idea of what these trends might look like in reality. This year the stijlinstituut Amsterdam has been responsible for the design and implementation. Their creativity is outstanding.

Mr Brown, thank you for talking to us.

    ALCHEMIST

Sharp edges and the seductive shimmer of metals and stones conti-nue to intrigue, adding extra dimen-sions to new shapes. At all angles, in all facets and curves, the sculp-tural aspects rely on architectural influences. Playing a mathematical game with optical illusions to create a solid, yet surreal construction.

    WITCHCRAFT

The mystical aspects of nature are re-explored and recreated in man-made animal skins, coats, furs and feathers. Organic surfaces such as moss-coverings and tree bark provide inspiration for natural struc-tures with eroded, weathered and frozen qualities. In combination with vintage and recycled fabrics in an interplay of nature, craftsmanship and technology.

    ENCHANTED

A fantasy world of plastic, bubble and pop comes to life through a fascinating and playful mixture of art, science and technology, stret-ching far beyond the normal limits of imagination. A comic chaos where rules are cast aside and bad taste no longer exists.

Mutiger, jünger und moderner lautete die zentra-

le Gestaltungsmaxime für die Entwicklung der ADO

    Frühjahrs-/Sommer-Kollektion 2009. Das Ergebnis der

textilen Frischzellenkur lässt die Branche aufmerken:

Trendsicher entwickelte ADO kreative Stoffserien mit

frischer Ausstrahlung, die deutlich machen, was man

ADO has developed a collection for spring/summer 2009

that is bolder, younger and utterly modern in design. The

result of this textile makeover has captured industry-wide

attention. Adept at identifying trends, ADO has developed

creative fabric lines with a refreshing appearance which

provide a clear indication of how much has been going on

in Aschendorf. With its assortment of over 70 designs, the

new collection for 2009 will appeal as much to new target

    groups as to ADO devotees.

ADO products have always provided an impressive example of the quality of products Made in Germany - for 40 years the gold edging has been the hallmark of curtaining and decorative fabrics from Aschendorf. In terms of design, ADO strives to offer top class performance and international flair. With its unprecedented variety of colours and fabrics and its astonishing range or themes, ADO‘s collection for spring/summer 2009 marks a mile-stone on this path. One of these colour concepts adopts an exciting and innovative approach to its reinterpretation of well-known elements and ADO classics. Modern colours in combination with classic, rich tones pick up on the colour philosophy adopted by the company in the autumn of last year. Totally new are the opulent designs which are bound to attract add itional target groups. Also of particular interest is the way in which this new coll-ection can be mixed and matched. Inspired and harmonious colour schemes

ADO‘s 2009 spring surprise An inspiring journey through a world of fabrics

provide plenty of exciting opportunities for window decorations at home. Shimmering luxury and three-dimensionality are just two of the facets of this new collection.

Clear-cut patterns in vivid colours conjure up the light-heartedness of sum-mer while embroidery impressions provide the finishing touches to floral and graphic designs. The wide range of fabrics, many in light tones of sand, stone and reed green, take on a natural appearance. A pinch of sensitivity provides the finishing touches to this multifaceted collection. Natural, earthy tones in harmoniously soft colours, discreet patterns with sparing use of extras convey the atmosphere of the peace and quiet of a Mediterranean evening. Various fabrics in opulent designs and deep, rich tones provide just the right amount of pomp. They appeal to the senses with striking contrasts between shiny metallic and matt surfaces and with sophisticated three dimensional structures. This range of new fabrics also includes faux suede fabrics and new animal skin prints. With an XXL version of the new designs, a part of ADO‘s new collection for spring/summer 2009 provides a sense of wellbeing on a somewhat larger scale. These fabrics appeal to the senses with their extravagant, sweeping patterns, alternating between softly shimmering and matt surfaces.

The new collection reflects the interplay between traditional and modern styles, between technical expertise and design competence. Fabrics sold by the metre have now been added to the floor-to-ceiling range, offering new design opportunities.

    Konsumenten nachhaltig ansprechen

Allerdings: Die

neue Zielgruppe ist vielschichtig und hat besondere

    Erwartungen.

both manufacturers and the trade in general, whether it

be eco-friendly luxury labels, 100% biodegradable plastic

products or Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified manufactur ing

processes (currently over 8000 companies worldwide com-

ply with this standard). However, the new target groups

are complex and have high expectations.

A paper entitled “Her mit den nachhaltigen Konsumenten” (Give us sustain-able consumers) published by BBE Retail Experts and Kom:pakt* assumes a “lifestyle of health and sustainability” professed by “health-conscious gourmets” who, in contrast to previous eco-generations, bring consumerism and sustainability down to a common denominator - which they then scru-tinise very closely. “Consumers expect to see this new strategy effectively implemented on all management levels along the entire value added chain. Not even organic product ranges or environment-friendly logistics concepts can save a business which has suffered bad press about the treatment of its employees.”

Enhancing credibility by means of a systematic approachSustainability “must always find expression in the core competencies of the business” and include “social responsibility”, says Dr Michael Arretz, Managing Director of Systain Consulting GmbH. You‘ll need to adopt a “systematic approach” if you want to introduce sustainability into a busi-ness. Initially, this will involve assessing the sustainable use of energy, water and other resources. However, when your assessments have been completed and your goals have been set, successful implementation will always depend on the whole-hearted support of your senior management.

In the long term, a systematic approach will form a credible basis for your external communications. “Your message to the trade and consumers is not just that you have understood and taken action. It‘s far more than that. It is that you are capable of systematically analysing what you are doing and what you plan to do. This is of major importance for any company wanting to promote its image as a sustainable business,” says Arretz.

Natural or synthetic materials?Although the value added chain is important, the focus of consumer atten-tion is essentially on the product. Since reports about harmful substances

    fairtop

    22 HEIMTEXTIL

have been appearing regularly in the media, consumers are paying more attention to materials. According to Anne Farken, designer and Senior Materials Researcher from Material ConneXion Cologne, as far as product design is concerned “consumers are increasingly looking for materials with a low environmental impact.” The trend is also moving towards materials which contain recycled materials or ones which can later easily be recycled. The “cradle to cradle” concept is also attracting a lot of interest. This con-cept looks at the entire life cycle of a product and at whether the materials used can subsequently be fully re-integrated into nature‘s cycles or into the supply chain.

However, it must be said that natural materials are not necessarily better than synthetic ones in terms of their ecological footprint. For example, if organic cotton has to travel long distances to reach its place of manufacture, or its processing is questionable, it can be more damaging to the environ-ment than a synthetic fabric.

Furthermore, most consumers are not yet aware of the fact that some syn-thetically manufactured fibres consist 100 percent of raw materials which will grow again the following year, for instance, corn or rice. “Fibres of this type combine the functionality of chemical fibres with the benefits of a natural material,” comments Farken. Notable progress is also being made in other areas. Nowadays, nanotechnology allows for the production of textiles which have hygienic surfaces, the ability to conduct heat and elec-tricity, and self-cleaning layers. “They are more energy-efficient and more environmentally sound,” explains Claude Bérubé, Director of Public Works for the Government of Sharjah, Head of Interior Design, General Directorate, United Arab Emirates.

Reaching your target group with a customised messageGuaranteeing sustainability alone does not ensure success in the market. The paper published by BBE/Kom:pakt clearly states that quality, benefit, design, price, etc. all play a part in the purchase decision. To what extent sustainability plays a role in the purchasing process depends on factors such as income, education and personal circumstances. Couples with young children, for example, experience “a particularly acute conflict trying to find the right balance between responsibility, health and price.” In contrast, older couples without children place more emphasis on sustainability. They have more money and are more concerned about their health.

Given this situation, the greatest challenge for designers is to develop an appropriate product message for the respective target groups. In their art icle “Von der Nische zum Massenmarkt” (“Out of the niche and into the mass market”)**, Anne Farken, designer and Senior Materials Researcher from MaterialConneXion Cologne, and Ursula Tischner, de signer and Managing Director of econcept – Agentur für Nachhaltiges Design (agency for sustai-nable design) explain that “for businesses, the trick is to design a product in such a way that consumers find reliable and sufficient indications of the fact that their specific product is better (in ecological terms) than competing products.” The meaning of “better” can vary, as the concept of sustainability can be different for each target group: “For some people, health and pro-ximity to nature are the most important things. Others value new, smart and efficient, technologies; or like the idea of buying a family heirloom and prefer long-lasting values and top quality; or are so deeply rooted in their local communities that they will always support re gional producers.” Appealing, sustainable product messages must take these facts into consideration. Sometimes it suffices to provide a convincing solution to a long-standing problem. The Hohenstein Institute, for example, has developed a new, mite-free mattress for allergy sufferers which is bound to attract the attention of approximately 4 to 5 million allergy sufferers in Germany. This mattress ensures a good night’s sleep by employing textile heating elements “without the use of chemical substances to which many people react very strongly”, explains Dr. Dirk Höfer, Director of the Institute for Hygiene und Biotechnology, one of the Hohenstein Institutes.

Until recently, striking colours only played a small part in

lifestyle spheres. That has all changed now.

Only a short while ago, German living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms were almost all painted in the same colour: beige. A nice, neu-tral colour, not at all flashy. At the most people experimented with the odd cushion, border or accessory in a more conspicuous colour. This era of calm is now a thing of the past – thank goodness. People have become more daring – mainly for one simple reason: decorative fabrics for curtains and upholstery, window blinds and panel curtains, wallpapers, rugs and carpets are now available in such subtle shades and bold colours that people can‘t wait to make their interiors more individual and much smarter. The examples on these pages illustrate just how attractive a room can be when it is decorated using bolder colours and when window decorations, wall ornaments and carpets are all harmoniously co-ordinated with the furniture.

Teba – optimum sun protection at workContemporary office spaces and show rooms pose a considerable challenge when it comes to light regulation, protection against glare and visibility. With its extensive range of products and well-designed search criteria, Teba makes it easy for its customers to find the most suitable products. The picture shows an architect‘s office in Holland which has been fitted with “Silhouette®“, a fabric Venetian blind. S-shaped fabric slats are welded between two sheer voile fabrics. “Silhouette®“ can be rolled up like a roller blind. When the slats are closed their transparent qualities let light through while offering privacy from prying eyes.A remote control or a draw cord can be used to adjust the slats to any angle you like, offering superior light regulation. Nya Nordiska – inspiring special design for “The Design Annual 2007“ For The Design Annual 2007 contestants were asked to design a textile screen to complement the “inside: private identity“ architectural concept of Milan designers Patricia Urquiola and Martino Berghinz. As a result, textile manufacturer Nya Nordiska came up with “Ypsilon CS“, a striking mesh fabric. The mesh fabric is made of 100% Trevira CS. 750 m of the fabric were delivered in white and hung from the rigging of the Frankfurt festival hall in 12 metre long widths. The interplay between the lighting and these widths of fabric was quite remarkable. The screen discreetly partitioned off the individual exhibition areas despite being a prominent feature of the hall. Crossing axis lines constitute the architectural elements of the basic pattern, while the tartan pattern was adopted as the formal and structural symbol of The Design Annual 2007. “Ypsilon CS“ has since been integrated into Nya Nordiska‘s collection.

A new generation of carpet tiles

The specialist for top quality carpeting launches an

impressive collection of carpet tiles for the living and the

    contract sector.

Just as consumers are rediscovering the joys of textile floor coverings, high quality carpets and fitted carpets, Object Carpet has come up with a new collection entitled “QUADRAMODUL“, dispelling popular mis-conceptions about carpet tiles. Ripples, waves and shrinkage are things of the past. Instead you‘ll get design, aesthetics, innovation, flexibility and practicability. You can choose from a wide range of different products. There are trendy, deep-pile shag carpets, extravagant prints and flat woven floor coverings. The “QUADRAMODUL“ tile collection comes in 14 different designs, in cluding an extravagant leopard spots design called “Leo“. With its “Cord“ and “Fishbone“ lines, OBJECT CARPET demonstrates that floor design can, indeed, be stylish. These are joined by basics such as ribbed patterns, loop-pile carpets, cut-pile carpets and “Poodle“, the notorious shag carpet line. On the whole, the colours tend to be discreet, vibrant colours being deliberately dispensed with. Added to these aesthetic features are tangible practical benefits. The tiles are loose-lay carpet tiles and so can easily be replaced should they become heavily soiled. Last, but not least, these TÜV certified flooring solutions from OBJECT CARPET are ideal for allergy sufferers, as confirmed by DAAB, the German Allergy and Asthma Foundation.
