Agilent Technologies in Germany An analytical measurement success story

The establishment of the first European Hewlett-Packard facility in Böblingen in 1959 represents the beginnings of Agilent Technologies in Germany. The success story in the areas of life sciences and chemical analysis began with the acquisition of Hupe & Busch from Karlsruhe-Grötzingen in 1973 and the founding of our Waldbronn site in 1978. Since then, Agilent Technologies

in Waldbronn has developed, produced and marketed leading comprehensive analytic solutions based on liquid chromatography, electrophoresis and microfluidics.

In 1999, the measurement division was spun off from HP, forming an in-dependent company called "Agilent Technologies," based in Santa Clara (California/USA). In 2014, the company

Keysight Technologies was formed when Agilent spun off its electronic measurement business, much of it located in Böblingen. Since then, Waldbronn has been one of Agilent’s largest sites, with about 800 em-ployees. Along with our other sites in Munich, Frankfurt and Ratingen, there is a staff of about 1,000 in Germany.

Matthias W., Production division manager

"A process of continuous improvement each and every day, combined with the creativity and commitment of our employees from Production, Purchasing and Engineering are key elements of our Agilent quality philosophy."

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)

HPLC is an analytical method used to separate and detect chemical com-pounds in complex substance mixtures. This can be applied even at very low concentrations. As one of the market leaders worldwide with a broad HPLC range, Agilent introduced the new Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC system in 2014, which sets new benchmarks in analytical, instrument and laboratory efficiency.

Our LC systems in the Agilent 1200 Infinity series are primarily used in the bio/pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. The development of safe and efficient products and the detection of contamination are just a few examples of the applications of HPLC.

Products and solutions German Engineering

Agilent Technologies in Germany primarily supports customers in three product areas: High-performance liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and microfluidics.

Microfluidics

Microfluidics is a product family of ana-lytical instruments which integrate mul-tiple functions as well as various work steps into a single glass or plastic chip measuring just a few square centime-ters in size.

Based on microfluidics technology, the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer System can separate complex mixtures, bio-

molecules or cells on a glass chip and is used in labs with low sample throughput.

The Agilent 4200 TapeStation system performs rapid, automated DNA and RNA electrophoresis. This system is used in laboratories where a high degree of automation is required due to the large number of samples.

Instruments from both product families are used in disease research. The focus here is on performing quality control of samples for the preparation of genetic experiments.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE)

Electrophoresis is typically used to analytically separate, quantify, enrich or purify larger biomolecules. The Agilent 7100 capillary electrophoresis system is one of the most powerful CE

systems on the market. Typical areas of application for CE systems are in the fields of pharmacy and biotechnology for the analysis of complex molecules during the development process, as

well as in the food industry for ensuring food quality and safety.

OFFGEL Fractionator

The Agilent 3100 OFFGEL Fractionator is a laboratory instrument used in bio-chemistry among other things for the

separation and purification of proteins or peptides based on their isoelectric point. For example, pharmaceutical

and biotechnology companies use the Agilent 3100 OFFGEL Fractionator in cancer research.
