Dear Members,There is a story about anunfortunate sequence of

events which goessomething like: For want of a nail, we lost the war. It

demonstrates how everything is connected,from the simplest piece of equipment (a horse-shoe) on up to the entire army. We can relate tothat at the Chapter. Just imagine:For want of a stamp, we didn't send out lettersto you members who have never respondedto our Chapter's appeal for funds.For want of a telephone call, we didn't solicitletters to the lawmakers to save our wildforests and scenic rivers.

For want of a fee, we didn't have a public out-reach booth at the San Marcos fair or othercommunity events to spread our message of concern for the wild places of the county.For want of good lumber and other supplies,we didn't repair Foster Lodge before weatherdamage set in.

V IEW F ROM THE C HAIRFor want of adequate staff, we didn't answer yourcalls for help on leash laws, provide comment let-ters on private purchase of public lands (NTC) orsend out our action alerts on other travesties beingperpetuated around the city.For want of a frequent newsletter, we didn't pub-lish our time sensitive hikes, backpacks andactivities.As you will read in this edition, our nationalorganization requires individual chapters to payfor staff, underwrite mandatory insurance andmake large contributions to the lobby efforts at thestate level. We depend on revenues from ourcourses, outings and donations from the specialinterest groups (e.g. photography) to help us payour bills. And we need supplementary donationsfrom our members to keep our activists working.

We have a mighty presence in the com-munity, but our weak links keep us from winningmany great battles in the war against the environ-ment. Please hear our urgent call and respondtoday. Send in an unrestricted gift, forego the pre-mium, keep us in your will, and help keep thiscounty the place in which we'd like to live.

D EAR M EMBERS ,This may be a good bye letter to you, the members of the SierraClub, San Diego Chapter. Our chapter is in deep financialstraits. In a drastic move to trim our budget, our ExecutiveCommittee voted last month to give me a choice of a layoff orhalf time employment , effective in June. Fortunately, this has been postponed because of the many letters written in supportof me and for the services I provide to members, the chapter, andthe environment.

I am deeply honored and warmed by the support andefforts that you have given to me. Thank you! Those of youwho know me know that I am committed to working for theenvironment and to empowering others to do so as well. I carevery much about this Chapter and the Sierra Club and theopportunities given to me to do this work . We have a very spe-cial chapter and organization, where people who care cometogether to enjoy and to protect our earth.

We do make a difference! The chapter plays an impor-tant role in the health and politics of the San Diego and ImperialCounties. Politicians often want to know where we stand onissues before they make their own stands. We fight for our envi-ronment every day, every night, and, if necessary, all night.Unfortunately, there are new attacks on our environment everyday, and the work piles higher. I am frustrated because we donot have enough resources to do it all. We don't have the timeor money or volunteers to deal with important things that will be forever lost. By the time you read this, I may be one of thethings lost. But the work must go on, and it can't go on withoutyour help.

Without your support, the San Diego Chapter of theSierra Club will be just another endangered species.

EVENING WITHTHE MAYOR!Our Chapters efforts helped electhim. So we have planned an"Evening with the Mayor" to meetwith and listen as San Diegos mayoranswers some of our hard questionson San Diego's environmenal issues.

The evening is built around SanDiego Mayor, Dick Murphy, whom the chapter endorsed in hisrazor-thin victory 2 years ago.

The mayor has championed a San Diego "River Park" from theriver's mountain headwaters to Mission Bay, has pressed to cleanup San Diego's beaches and bays, he invited a Citizen's AdvisoryCouncil on the Environment and has been responsive to many of our campaigns.

Let's make this "Evening with the Mayor" a great success as amajor fund raising event for the Chapter. It's Thursday, October17th in the atrium of the Natural History Museum. The tables are$1000 for eleven people. Keep one seat for yourself and sell tenothers to your friends for $100 each. Or purchase two and bring afriend. Chapter Notes SIERRA CLUB GALLERY AT RAY STREET ANNOUNCESCOLLABORATION WITH ARTS GROUP:'LARRY DUMLAO GALLERY ' TO BE DEDICATED J ULY 13GRANT HUGHES PLEIN AIR PAINTINGS BEGIN SATURDAY , AUGUST 10ANNOUNCING :A collaboration betweenThe Sierra Clu b, dedicated to the exploration

enjoyment and health of wild places on earth, andPublic Address , anadvocacy group of public artists committed to exploring the boundarieart and the environment.

The collaboration will take the form of an installation byPublic Address members in the window of the Sierra ClubBookstore, located on Ray Street in North Park. Ray Street is cur-rently the "hot" art scene in San Diego, according to the San DiegoUnion Tribune. Monthly "Ray at Night" openings attract 500-1000art aficionados and bookstore browsers. The Sierra Club receives acommission from the sale of each piece of art. The window willevoke the missions of both institutions, and will open on "Ray atNight" evenings the second Saturday of the month. The inaugu-ral exhibition, "A Work in Progress'' will be dedicated to LarryDumlao.

Dumlao, who died in 1995, was the last artist to takecharge of the window. Raised in Hawaii and educated at SDSU,he had a studio at Brown Field for many years from which daringart, dialogue and music emanated. Larry was an active Sierra Clubmember, and a popular outing leader. His vision, energy and wis-dom are still high watermarks to many in the SanDiego art and environmentalcommunities.

This exhibition will be by Public Address member and project coordinatorRobin Brailsford, Dumlao'sstudio neighbor for manyyears at Brown Field Airport.The show will open July 13,2002 at 6:00 pm, and willextend through August 7, 2002.

Brailsford is well known locally for her work on theGrand Avenue Lifeguard Tower , at the Tijuana Estuary ResearchReserve and for Bird Park , a six acre children's park in Balboa Park.Currently working on the North County Coastal Rail Trail and theMiramar Water Treatment Plant, her installation at Ray Street will be an eclectic arrangement of memorabilia given to her, and/or left behind by Dumlao. She invites - and will include in the window asthey arrive - Dumlao "objects d' art," including prints, bones, cin-derblocks, and crows brought by friends and collectors.G RANT H UGHES : AUGUST 10 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 13Plein air artist Grant Hughes will be on hand to present his imagesof local San Diego natural scenes. Grant has been painting naturallandscapes in oil for over 10 years. These paintings, created in theoutdoors, vividly capture the essence of the special nature of SanDiego. Grant's bold strokes and sensitive attention to light andshadow capture the stunning beauty of San Diego's unique natu-ral places. SMITHLIVING ROOM CONCERT FUNDRAISER'Bow Willow', Saturday Evening, September 7, Los PeasquitosCanyon Preserve Join us for a summer evening of folk music at the Rancho SantaMaria de Los Peasquitos adobe. Built in 1823, this 'living room'venue is the oldest residential structure in San Diego County, usedfor our event through arrangement with the County of San Diego.We'll relax to the acoustic sounds of 'Bow Willow', the renownedfolk music ensemble of Vickie Cottle, Walt Richards and PaulaStrong. Their wonderful folk music brings to life the history of theold west with stories of trains, cowboys, wide open spaces, andrugged adventure. Their music will be accompanied by the cow- boy poetry of John Sedberry, whose prose exquisitely captures thefeeling of the old west.

Tonight's concert will be held under the stars in the court-yard of the historic adobe, so bring your blankets and beach chairs.We'll begin with a potluck dinner at 6:00 pm (bring your own foodto share and beverages), followed by Bow Willow's program at7:00 pm.Your $25.00 suggested donation will help support theongoing issue work of the San Diego Chapter's ConservationCommittee.

Chapter Notes (cont)CHAPTER EXCOMELECTIONSDEADLINE FORPETITION CANDIDATES LOOMS.ELECTION DATES SET .The deadline for candidates to submitpetitions of nomination for election tothe Chapter Executive Committee has been set. All peti tions must bereceived in the Chapter office by July16 at 5pm. Any chapter member whowas not nominated by theNominating Committee at the June 19meeting of the Chapter ExCom maysubmit a nominating petition. Thepetition must contain the names of atleast 50 Chapter members in goodstanding. The Chapter Excom willapprove the final Chapter election bal-lot at their July 17 meeting.

The official election ballotwill be contained in theSeptember/October edition of the HiSierran. This edition will also containstatements submitted by each candi-date.

There are four seats to befilled in this year's election. Thoseelected will serve a term of two years beginning in January 2003. TheExecutive Committee is responsiblefor the management of the affairs andactivities of the Chapter. OR NOT!Cheryl Reiff, the Sierra Club, San Diego ChapterOffice Manager, and Glenn Torbett, a chapterenvironmental activist and recent recipient of national Sierra Club's Susan E. Miller Award , willshare their experiences of their striking 2001China journey. Each will share perspectivesfrom a dramatically different travel experience.This was Cheryl's first overseas trip, whereasGlenn has been to more than 50 countries,including China and Tibet in 1991. The pro-gram will be a multi media presentation of

slides, video and music. Their trip was anextraordinary combination of old, new and nat-ural wonders, populated by lots of interestingpeople.

FRIDAY AUGUST 16SAVING THE CANYONSAND OTHER NATURALPLACESUndeveloped canyons andlagoons in San Diego didnt justhappen. They are still here because of the decades-longefforts by citizens to protectthem, and they give SanDiegans a exceptional opportu-nity to enjoy nature in a big city.

The program will focuson Friends groups in three dif-ferent neighborhoods LosPeasquitos, Famosa Slough inPoint Loma, and SwitzerCanyon. The speakers, Mike

Kelly, Jim Peugh, and CarrieSchneider, will describe what ledto the formation of the FriendsGroup , our achievements, andthe role the Friends Group playsin ongoing protection.
