insurance) associated with man-aging their membership.Today, this amount of money doesn't start tocover the costs! We haveover 18,000 chapter mem- bers, each of whom costs thechapter over $8 to "service.WE'RE GOING UNDER!Over the last 25 years, rents haveincreased, publishing costs have goneup, and administrative expenses suchas insurance, utilities and salaries, though still very low, have risen.During this time, the annual dues sub-vention from National Sierra Club hasremained the same. Yes, the situationis unfair. Yes , this needs to change, andefforts at the national level are under-way to do that. They could take a year.Or two. No , this won't help our chapternow! We need your help. Today!

Our current operating budgetis $25,000 in the red. This short-fall isdue to the reasons described above aswell as the challenging fundraising cli-mate for environmental non-profitstoday. The really good news is thatour current Executive Committee hastaken steps to establish better manage-ment practices, and staff time has beenre-allocated to better address our cur-rent fund raising needs.

Our systems are in good order, but we have a $25,000 shortfall. If wedon't raise this amount in 30 days, theExecutive Committee will have to cutthe staff positions of ChapterCoordinator and ConservationCoordinator to half-time!

We are writing you NOW withthis urgent appeal: Please send thechapter a check today for $5, $50, or$5,000 whatever you can afford. Thecollective giving potential of over18,000 San Diego Chapter members canturn this ship around! Refer to the back cover of this issue for details about oursuccessful campaigns, and a fundappeal response form. We need everymember's help NOW, to ensure ahealthy San Diego Chapter.
