    Canyon UpdateBy Eric Bowlby

Sierra Club success stories areoften just milestones in a never-

ending mission to protect our en-vironment. Launched in 1999, theSierra Clubs San Diego CanyonsCampaign is decorated with a se-ries of shining milestones. Nineyears later, the campaign is poisedto focus even more on the canyonsby providing the long-term dedica-tion that they need and deserve. This year a new non-profit dedi-cated to San Diegos wonderful

canyons will be launched, with aplan to grow to eight full time staffmembers by 2011!

    The campaign started when the

threat of a new sewer maintenanceroad in Switzer Canyon reachedthe ears of attentive North Parkresidents. The Chapter helped byorganizing a guided tour in theneighborhood canyon, where, on arainy Saturday morning, nearly 60

residents showed up to learn aboutthe threat and the importance ofthese islands of natural open spacescattered throughout our city.

So how did we fare locally? Forme the biggest disappointment wasthe failure of Steve Francis to makeit into the runoff. I know a number of you were not convinced hewas the right candidate for Mayor

of San Diego, but considering thatthe Chapter uses the same processfor all our endorsements, we feltthat it was the right choice for theenvironment. Our endorsement ofMike Aguirre for re-election to CityAttorney for San Diego was alsocontroversial for some members. hope you will take a good look athis environmental record and support his re-election. Of course, alof our good friends sailed throughthe elections with impressive wins US Representatives Bob Filner andSusan Davis, CA Senator ChristineKehoe, Assemblywoman Lori Sal-dana and County Supervisor PamSlater-Price. Endorsed candidatesfor City of San Diego council races(Sheri Lightner Dist 1, StephenWhitburn Dist 3, and Marty Em-erald Dist 7) all made the runoffsThese will be much tougher races

    3/16 July/August 2008 Hi Sierran San Diego 3

Election Day Full of Wins for Sierra ClubBy Bill MagavernDirector, Sierra Club California

Low voter turnout did notstand in the way of victory for Si-erra Clubs causes and candidatesin Californias June 3 primary elec-tion.

For the second time in threeyears, environmental groups joinedwith our allies to defeat a radicalproperty owners measure. Propo-sition 98, that would have harmedour air, water and wildlands. At

the same time, voters approvedProposition 99, a sensible mea-sure to protect homes from abusesof governments eminent domainpower.

In legislative primaries up anddown the state, candidates withcompelling environmental recordsand platforms triumphed. SierraClub endorsed nine candidatesfor state Senate, and all nine won.We endorsed in 31 state Assemblyraces, and our candidates prevailedin 30 of those.

These victories mean the 2009-10 session of the State Legislaturewill feature numerous environ-mental champions. Californiaslegislative districts are almost allsafe for one party or the other, sothe primary elections have alreadydetermined the next holders ofmost of these seats.

Former Assemblymember FranPavley, author of the two most im-portant global warming laws everpassed in the United States, willreturn to the Capitol as a senatorfrom the coastal Los Angeles area.Three San Francisco Bay Area As-semblymembers with excellent re-cords Mark Leno, Mark DeSaul-nier and Loni Hancock will alsomove to the Senate.

The Assembly freshman classalso stars a galaxy of green cham-pions. Winning their primarieswith Sierra Clubs endorsementwere Waste Board member andformer senator Wes Chesbro, AirResources Board member and SanMateo County Supervisor JerryHill (if his current lead holds up),Berkeley environmentalist NancySkinner, San Francisco Supervisor

Tom Ammiano, Silicon Valley edu-cator Paul Fong, Monterey lawyer

Bill Monning, former Congressio-nal staffer Bob Blumenfield in theSan Fernando Valley, labor leader

John Perez in East Los Angelesand Long Beach City Councilmember Bonnie Lowenthal.

Friday, July 18th program, 7:30 p.m.Canyon Campaign Update

Founded in 1999, the SanDiego Canyons Campaign hasgrown from a hike of 60 area resi-dents concerned about a sewermaintenance road to an organiza-tion comprising over 40 CanyonFriends Groups throughout thecounty. San Diego is unique and

fortunate to have these naturalopen spaces scattered throughoutthe county despite its growth andincreasing urbanization. For nearlya decade, the campaign has fos-tered awareness, appreciation andongoing community involvementin the protection and restoration ofthe unique canyon and creek habi-tats in San Diego.

In order to further the cam-paigns vision that San Diegos

Canyons are widely respected, managed and enjoyed for theirnatural and unique ecological con-tributions, the campaign has em-barked on becoming its own non-profit organization! This changewill better equip the campaign inthree key areas: community orga-nization, operations and fundrais-ing.

    Eric Bowlby, the campaigns

Conservation Program Manager, isa Massachusetts native who movedto San Diego in 1976. He earnedAssociates degrees in English andComputer Science from local com-munity colleges and has been thecoordinator of the Sierra Club SanDiegos Canyons Campaign for overeight years. He served as chair ofthe Chapters Executive Committeein 1999 and 2000 and helped buildthe Canyons Campaign from its

    inception. Bowlby has also served

for years on the City of San Diego

    Wetland Advisory Board and Open

Elfin Forest meets Promise Charter School

With a shriek, Berenice turned and bolted backdown the path. A snake!

Bill hurled himself into the bushes and emergedvictoriously holding a patch-nosed snake, the first onehed ever seen in the wild. Soon he had the wholegroup crowded around.

Luz wanted to hold it. Most everyone, eventually, wanted to touch it -- at least the tail.

Then there was the after-lunch water fight at the

summit of our Elfin Forest hike. And thats how ICOtrips often go.

Thanks from Promise Charter School to Suzanne,Julie, and Bill, the ICO leaders and volunteers.

Give thanks tothose people because they go out of their way to makeit fun for us. Believe it or not, when we go, we makeit enjoyable for them too, because theyre glad that

the May 12th California Public Utilities Commissions(CPUC) public hearing in Borrego Springs to opposeSunrise Powerlink. Nearly 650 people turned out tooppose the line. This hearing was unique in that itwas the first and only time four of the five CPUC Commissioners traveled to San Diego County to hear fromthe community about this proposal. The San DiegoUnion-Tribune reported that opponents of the projectoutnumbered supporters by an impressive eight toone. Supporters of smart energy alternatives came inmany shapes and sizes, from young children to retirees. This diverse group included environmentalistsranchers, health advocates, property owners, scientists, fire experts and campers. There was even an official representative from the Ninth District PTA, a di-rect result of Sierra Club organizing efforts. Her concerns include fire danger and increased air pollutiondue to Sunrise Powerlinks connection with Sempra

the city to learn about, defend, and steward their neighborhoodopen spaces.

The Switzer Canyon tour in1999 was a milestone itself. TheSierra Club has since established

over 40 Friends Groups for can-yons and creeks throughout thecounty.

Canyon Friends Group accom-plishments are impressive as well. With the leadership of TershiadElgin, the 32nd Street Canyonfriends group thwarted the devel-opment of a school and raised over$220,000 for habitat restorationright where the school would havebeen! Friends of Rose Canyon hasgrown their group to 2,900 mem-bers and won a lawsuit halting theRegents Road extension throughthat beautiful regional park.

The time has come to accel-erate the growth of the canyonsmovement. After three years of

discussion and evaluation, a groupof individuals who were involvedwith the Canyons Campaign fromits inception, submitted a state-ment of pros and cons to the Con-servation and Executive Commit-tees outlining their decision tolaunch a new non-profit dedicatedto San Diegos wonderful canyons,San Diego Canyonlands, Inc. TheSan Diego Chapter leadership wel-comed this new environmental or-ganiztion to protect our canyons. With the surety that San DiegoCanyonlands, inc. would carry onthis important work, the ExecutiveCommittee decided to formallyend the Chapters Canyons Cam-paign and fully support the efforts

While the armies topreserve San Diegos open spaceswill always be vigilant, San DiegoCanyonlands will strengthen environmental forces throughout thecounty.
