KUNSTDOKUMENTATION WERNER KITTEL
Abteilung MÖBEL: Ebenisten – Register Neben der Erfassung von Möbeln der Zeit vor 1880 nach dominierenden Dekoren (z.B. Elfenbein-Intarsien),Material (z.
Department of Furniture: Register of Cabinetmakers
In addition to the subcategories of furniture prior to 1880 by dominating decoration (furniture with ivory intarsia for example), material (furniture made of metal, silver or steel for example) and as residual subcategory: anonymous furniture according to typology, a continuously growing category of furniture has evolved that can be safely attributed to specific makers or that is signed (in the case of French ébénistes for example). In addition to the French ébénistes, English and American “cabinetmakers“ we record masters of continental Europe with all their specific designations: from Kistler (German: Kiste = box/crate) to Hofschreiner (court appointed cabinetmaker; these often freed from the guild constraints). The documents are collected in a loose-leaf-manner in standing envelopes. Important artists like Abraham and David Roentgen are structured as are regular artists: typologically and then in each category (for example commodes) chronologically according to appearance in the marketplace or at auction; works in museums and collections precede these; the beginning consists of essays, biographical material and literature on the particular artist. Usually, when names of other artists such as designers, carvers, gilders etc. are known, the document is copied and deposited accordingly (multiple deposit). Since copies of important French signed pieces are produced until the present day, many pieces have been additionally copied and deposited in the typology, decoration or material subcategories. Thus the “original“ can be more easily found. Artistic furniture of the period post 1880 will be found in the general artists’ alphabet, possibly with a second deposit in the Department of Firms and Institutions, when known.
