Das Englische Seminar ist in drei Abteilungen untergliedert: die Abteilung für Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft (Leiter: Prof. Dr. Franz Meier), die Abteilung für Englische Sprachwis-senschaft (Leiter: Prof. Dr. Hero Janßen) sowie die Abteilung für Englische Sprache und ihre Didaktik (Leiter: Prof. Dr. Claus Gnutzmann).

Das Englische Seminar bildet seit dem WS 2003/2004 im Studiengang BA (Bachelor) aus, der u. a. mit den weiterführenden Lehramts-Masterstudiengängen für GH/R und LG verknüpft ist. Das Englische Seminar ist beteiligt an den Master-Studiengängen „Kultur der technisch-wissenschaftlichen Welt“ und „Organisationskulturen und Wissenstransfer“. Ferner sind noch einige Studierende in den alten Lehramtsstudiengängen und in den Magisterstudiengängen mit Abschluss Staatsexamen.

Kurse für den Studiengang BA Fakultatives Kursangebot für alle Studienniveaus M. Bacon, M.A.: Vocabulary Expansion – 4412 229 UE, Fr 11:30 – 13:00, BI 85.3 This course is recommended for all students who have taken the B4 module. As students often find that they have a lack of general "common core" vocabulary when they come to write essays and other texts, the aim of this course is to provide students at this level with the opportunity of consolidating and improving their use of vocabulary - an area of prac-tical language work that is often neglected in traditional courses. The course will in particular concentrate on extending the student's range of general (non-specialist) vocabulary by looking at such areas as word-fields, antonyms, synonyms and word-formation. Some emphasis in the course will be laid on learning expressions that naturally occur or belong together, so-called “collocations“. Idioms and phrasal verbs, both of which belong more to spoken English, will also be examined and practised. Emphasis in the course will be on practical classwork and tasks. Further information concern-ing course requirements will be given in the first session. M. Bacon, M.A.: Grammar II – 4412 271 UE, Fr 13:15 – 14:45, BI 85.3 This course is recommended for all students who have taken the B4 module and deals with many of the problems that German speakers have with English grammar. Although we shall, of course, be looking at basic grammatical categories such as word-classes and clause constituents, the course will focus particularly on the verb: tenses, simple and pro-gressive aspects, modal auxiliaries, reported speech and the passive. In addition, special atten-tion will be paid to verb patterns and prepositional usage in English. A reader and/or exercise material will be made available in the class. Useful grammar refer-ence and practice books that you should consider purchasing will be discussed in class. Fur-ther information concerning course requirements will be given in the first session. Jun. Prof. Dr. R. Heinze: Introduction to Film: History, Theory, Analysis – 4412 306 VL, Mo 16:45 – 18:15, BI 84.2 This course will introduce you to the history, theory, and analysis of film. We will survey film history from the earliest (pre-film) beginnings in the 19th century to the present, discuss the most important theoretical frameworks for analyzing film, and analyze specific examples in order to put theory and terminology to the test. At the end of the course, you should be able to talk and write about film as film. Note: The most important films will be shown in additional screenings. Marcsek-Fuchs TUBS-Players: English Theatre Group – 4412 324 Voraussichtlich Mo. 19:00-22:00, BI 97/Klingemanns Dach (ab Januar 2010) The student theatre group of the English Seminar, TUBS-Players, has been producing plays for almost 20 years. We aim to provide quality entertainment in English for students of the TU as well as secondary schools and the general public. Any students (also from other facul-ties) who are interested in joining the group, whether on stage or to help backstage, are wel-come to join us. Acting in English gives students an excellent opportunity to improve their language proficiency and deepen their interpretative skills in our discussion rounds. Rehears-als and workshops are usually held once or twice a week in the evenings in Klingemanns Dach, the attic space of Bienroder Weg 97. We choose the play and hold auditions for roles in the first weeks of January. Acting experi-ence is not absolutely necessary but might be helpful. The production of the play is scheduled for early fall 2010 which is dependent on the availability of the stage (at present we play in the Brunsviga as the university has no stage). PD Dr. Jürgen Meyer Academic Writing – 4412 199 (Blockveranstaltungen, Freitag, 06.11., 27.11., 11.12.2009 und 15.01.2010, jeweils von 13:15 – 19:00 Uhr, BI.85.2) This class is designed to assist students in preparing, structuring, and composing their aca-demic term-papers. We will focus on technical issues such as research methods, information retrieval and processing, and then discuss such topics as how to read research literature criti-cally. The next step is the conception of a structure, and accomplishing ideals of the formal consistency required in an academic paper. Along with those topics, we will develop a higher ethical awareness for what is intellectual property (Internet and Copyright), and selection principles of what is citable and what is not. There will be three assignments which serve as practical exercises for the subject matter dis-cussed in session, and as preparation for the end-of-term papers. Please note: This is an intensive course taught as Blockveranstaltung, taking place on four Friday afternoons, from 13:15 –19:00 h. Would you consider this excerpt to be a literary text? If yes, why so?

In this course we will start out with just this question: What exactly is literature? How do I come to grips with different genres, periods, analytical techniques and theoretical methods? This seminar is meant to be an introduction to crucial concepts of British and American Liter-ary Studies. We will discuss poems, narratives and dramatic works in order to deepen our analytical skills, familiarize ourselves with technical terms and learn how to contextualize the works in question. We will additionally investigate how literary theory can enrich our reading experience and learn techniques of literary scholarship for both oral presentations and written papers. As key texts we will enjoy William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which should be read prior to our first session. A selec-tion of poems and short stories, from both British and American literary history, will be dis-tributed as a reader. Inhalte und Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur This course aims at introducing you to British and American literature and culture and will provide you with important terms and techniques to analyse poetry, narrative texts and drama.

To start off, we will attempt to answer the following question: What exactly is literature? We will also look at techniques of scholarly work (e.g. bibliographical research and quoting), which will become necessary when you will be expected to write your first term paper. Furthermore, we will make ourselves familiar with genres as well as concepts of literary history and investigate into the in-terconnection of cultural and literary developments.

After these theoretical introductory sessions, we will start with the analysis of various forms of poetry from different English and American periods (you will not need to purchase any poems, master copies will be available in a folder in the library on the campus before the beginning of the term). Then we will plunge into the analysis of Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. In addition, we may look at one or two American short stories (which will also be provided in a folder in the li-brary). Inhalte und Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur Education in Britain has a long and chequered history. The aim of this course is therefore to give students both a historical perspective of the education system in Britain as well as a gen-eral overview of its present structure. We shall make a point of comparing the British and the German system. Initially, we shall be looking at the school system with its contrasts of state and private schooling. In particular, we shall be concentrating on the two opposing poles of the Compre-hensive School (state) and the Public School (private). The comprehensivization of schools after the 2nd World War aimed to produce more equality and more opportunities for the pu-pils while the independent school system has sustained a long-standing class system. It is probably true to say that the Public School has had more influence on British (and colonial) society over the years than any other institution. We shall then turn to the British University system and its structures. In the wake of the Bolo-gna Resolution, Europe and Germany decided to improve the quality of studying and make student mobility easier by introducing the Anglo-Saxon BA/MA system, which in itself im-plies that the Anglo-Saxon system is “better“. Foreign language pedagogy is an interdisciplinary subject that draws from applied linguistics, literature, education, psychology, politics and other disciplines that have a possible impact on language teaching and learning. This course has the following goals:

- to sketch briefly the history of foreign language teaching functions and to demonstrate its political dimension

- to work out the aims of foreign language teaching and learning and to analyse the role of English in the context of plurilingualism

- to provide a survey of methods and approaches as well as media used in second and for-eign language teaching

- to give an overview of some of the issues involved in the teaching of the linguistic system and the structures of English (pronunciation, lexis, grammar) and the use of the language in constructing and mediating culture(s)

- to outline the development of the linguistic skills such as listening and reading compre-hension, speaking and writing

- to show the role of learners in the learning process and how they can best achieve their aims in learning a foreign language

Topics will be presented with a view to school and adult education; theoretical aspects of lan-guage learning will be discussed as well. A reader will be available at the beginning of the semester.

This course is a joint course with the University of Nottingham and designed for stu-dents who are interested in meeting native-speakers of English. Alongside the regular course content as described above we will work together with a group of German lan-guage learners from the University of Nottingham in a virtual classroom during the first six weeks of the semester and discuss topics of common interest (e.g. student life). You will also gain hands-on experience in teaching (German as) a foreign language and in us-ing new media (e.g. video-based communication, virtual learning environment WebCT). The number of participants is limited to 15. Some of the sessions will take place in the Gauß-IT-Zentrum. Registration: Register on Stud.IP before the first session. Practical Phonetics – 4412 158 UE

Inhalte und Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur This practical language course is designed for all students in their first year to improve their English pronunciation and intonation. The course takes place in the winter and the summer semester. At the end of the course students can take the Pronunciation Test ("Aussprachetest"). In this course students will be given the opportunity to practice the sounds, rhythms and intonation patterns of British-English and emphasis will be laid on areas where German students have pronunciation difficulties. Two different units are practiced within each session. As the Language Laboratory has limited space, the number of students that can attend has to be restricted to 18. However, students who have already spent six months or more in an Eng-lish-speaking country should only take the Pronunciation Test and do not need to attend the course. Students wishing to attend should therefore put their names into the course-list which will be put on the pinboard 2 weeks before the beginning of the semester.

Inhalte der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur This course is intended for all first-year BA students who require the course credit points for the B4 module “Language Skills“. Students may take the course in the winter or summer se-mester. The writing of "discourse" demands a relatively high standard of English so, depend-ing on their language ability, students should consider completing Grammar 1 before taking Essay-Writing. The aim of this course is to help students to express their thoughts in "common core" written English clearly, concisely, cohesively and correctly. Although some attention will be paid to sentence-level difficulties - in particular, grammatical accuracy and acceptability - the pri-mary focus of the course will be on the structuring and organisation of ideas in the essay. Es-says and other text production tasks will be set on a variety of subjects, and the students will be given the opportunity to examine vocabulary appropriate to the subject-matter of the topic/task in question. It must also be pointed out that a certain amount of private study (in particular the close read-ing of quality English/American newspapers and magazines) is essential if students are to ef-fectively expand their vocabulary and thereby improve their ability to express themselves in written English. Students should therefore put their names into the appropriate course-lists which will be put up on the board so as to ensure equal distribution of numbers. From apron stage to proscenium arch, from prose romance to early attempts of novel writing, from Shakespearean sonnets to poetic diction of Neoclassicism—we find exciting shifts of para-digm wherever we look. This survey course is designed as an introduction to important texts of the 17th and 18th centuries. Our literary as well as cultural journey will encompass poetry, drama, narrative fic-tion, essays, and culturally relevant critical texts. äquivalente Lehrveranstaltungen -- Inhalte und zu Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur Noam Chomsky once stated the ideal of the homogeneous speech community which, in fact, is in con-trast to linguistic reality that is characterized by heterogeneity, i. e. linguistic variation, in many re-spects. This variation is expressed in regional (standard variety vs. dialect), functional (situational style), or social varieties (group-specific and gender-specific variants based, for example, on social class, age or sex of speakers). The branch of linguistics called sociolinguistics is concerned with this linguistic variation with refer-ence to the social context that language is used in. It deals with the correlation between linguistic variation and various social factors such as ascribed vs. acquired characteristics (social class, sex, age) but also social ambition, or individual network integration, for example. In this seminar we will take a look at English from a sociolinguistic point of view. That is, participants will be introduced to forms of linguistic variation within the English language. Some selected areas of sociolinguistics will include classical sociolinguistics with the groundbreaking urban dialect studies done by Labov in New York City as well as those studies done by Trudgill in Norwich. In this connec-tion we will focus on the variables social class, gender and age and their impact on language use. We will also take into account other factors such as situation, power, orientation and contact, as well as in-tegration into social networks and their influence on language variation. Other areas of sociolinguistics to be touched on will entail linguistic variation with reference to the situational context, differences in the use of language between men and women (gender studies), multilingualism in society, language change through language contact (English-based pidgins and creoles), as well as the notion of the “lin-guistic marketplace.”

Inhalte und Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur This course is designed for all BA students in their second year who require the course credit points for the A4 module “Intermediate Language Skills“. Students may take the course in the winter or summer semester. As students often find that they have a lack of general "common core" vocabulary when they come to write essays and other texts, the aim of this course is to provide students at this level with the opportunity of consolidating and improving their use of vocabulary - an area of prac-tical language work that is often neglected in traditional courses. The course will in particular concentrate on extending the student's range of general (non-specialist) vocabulary by looking at such areas as word-fields, antonyms, synonyms and word-formation. Some emphasis in the course will be laid on learning expressions that naturally occur or belong together, so-called “collocations“. Idioms and phrasal verbs, both of which belong more to spoken English, will also be examined and practised. Emphasis in the course will be on practical classwork and tasks. Inhalte und Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur In this seminar we will focus on literary and theoretical texts that try to come to terms with the fundamental fact that clothes are an essential attribute of most human beings’ lives. Start-ing out with Thomas Carlyle’s witty „philosophy of clothes“ attributed to the German scholar Teufelsdroeckh, we will study texts from various periods of both English and American liter-ary history, ranging widely over various genres, from the court masques of Inigo Jones to P. G. Wodehouse, and from Anna Cora Mowatt’s play Fashion to the movie The Devil Wears Prada and Nicholas Antongiavanni’s The Suit. A Machiavellian Approach to Men’s Clothing. Philosophical and semiotic theories of fashion from Carlyle to Barthes, Hollander and Lurie will provide the background for analysing various issues of clothing and fashion, including the role of the theatre, gender, politics. Elizabethan clothing as well as the phenomenon of the dandy will be given due consideration. Inhalte und Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur Research into the linguistic forms and uses of English as a lingua franca has gained considerable momentum over the past decade. There are a number of reasons for this development, which can be found on a European and on a global level. The introduction of the European Single Market in 1992 and the enlargement of the European Union with its present 27 member states and 23 official languages have – despite official EU language policies of pluri- and multilingualism – resulted in the emergence of English as a(n unofficial) lingua franca in Europe, and a comparable result can be observed through the use of English as a global language. Undoubtedly, the English language has become the medium of globalisation and it is itself deeply affected by globalisation. As a re-sult, many and new kinds of Englishes all over the world have come into being, and these give rise to a number of questions relating to The relationship between native varieties and other forms of English and connected quan-titative and qualitative issues: To what extent do non-native speakers outnumber native speakers? What is the relevance of this ratio? Whose English is more intelligible, under which circum-stances? When and how do communication breakdowns occur and how can they possibly be re-paired? The status of English as a lingua franca in Europe (EELF): Can EELF be conceptualised as a form in its own right or even as a linguistic variety? Can it serve as a marker of Euro-pean identity, or is it rather a ‘corrupt’ form of Standard English? The functions of English as a medium in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and in English medium study courses: Does English in these contexts further global-intercultural communication and understanding? Are its potential benefits above all economic and financial ones? Does the increasing shift of domains in favour of English constitute a serious threat to other languages? Does English endanger other languages in education or even threaten the linguistic eco-system? The dominance of English in academic communication: Does it foster scientific progress globally, or does it above all contribute to the spread of Anglo-American theories and methods? Does it put non-native speakers of English at a serious disadvantage, e.g. with regard to publish-ing their research in international journals? Can the dominance of Eng-lish be compensated for by establishing a new form of English like “Globalish”? The impact of ELF and EELF on speakers’ identities: Are ELF and EELF, ideologically speaking, neutral forms of English or do they foster Englishisation and Americanisation of other languages and cultures? If so, how could these processes be evaluated? The teaching of English (as a lingua franca): How could the development of English as a lingua franca be reflected in English language classrooms, for non-native learners, but possibly also for pupils in the ‘real’ English-speaking world? Do we need new teaching models? If so, how could they be legitimised, what could they look like and how could they be implemented in the classroom?

Inhalte und zu Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur Expressive expressions are common verbal devices in everyday language. The (rude) lan-guage of youth, the language of emotions, the female gender speech style, the language of ad-vertising, the language of internet chats and blogs – they all display a wide range of expres-sive linguistic devices and of social and institutional contexts. Among these expressive de-vices, we find (as expressives in a narrow sense): expressive speech acts, swear words and phrases, derogatory nouns like bastard, idiot, Yank, nigger, nominal and adjectival noun modifiers (this bastard Bush, this damned uncle), interjections (ouch, oops, wow, aaargh, gosh, phew), modal particles and adverbs, degree adverbs (totally), empty words (nice) inten-sifiers, hedges, downtoners, and upgraders, exclamatory markers (what a …. , how beauti-ful…), intonation markers, etc. Expressive language can also be discovered in word formation (e.g. innovations in youth language or advertising) and in syntax (affected and free dative, sentence type of exclamation, clefts and pseudo-clefts, right-dislocation. Innovative forms can be discovered in internet language using fixed performative verb forms like grin, laugh (in chat rooms). The functions of such expressive words, phrases and constructions range from signalling emotions of e.g. surprise or disgust, to marking group identity and to self presenta-tion. The linguistic and social meaning of such expressives is based on conversational impli-catures and presuppositions. After a repetition of these pragmatic foundations, we will look at the different classes of such expressive expressions. The focus of the course, however, will lie on their functions and variation in typical social contexts (youth, gender, advertising, internet chat, etc.). Literatur: C. Inhalte und zu Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur Pragmatic markers (also often called discourse markers or particles) in a broad sense comprise the classes of speech act markers (pragmatics) and of text-sequence markers (discourse). They are realised as words, phrases, or even syntactic constructions (e.g. question tags) and are commonly characterized as short, recurrent (with high frequency), and optional verbal ele-ments, which are typically used in informal contexts (because of their stylistic stigmatisation and negative evaluation) and display an extensive multi-functionality. Pragmatic markers in a narrow sense refer to a set of linguistic items which have only little or no lexical content and therefore do not contribute to the inference of the propositional part of speech acts meanings. But they serve significant (non-propositional) functions of speech acts: i.e. signalling speaker’s attitude, feeling, evaluation, or perspective on the things and matters, empathy, ide-ology, etc. They also include modal modifiers like hedges, downtoners, upgraders, etc. The central question concerns the relationship between linguistic meaning, its ways of semantic and pragmatic modification of content, and the contextual parameters. The object of this course thus touches the interface of semantics and pragmatics. Discourse markers in a narrow sense are interactional and sequential signals and thus apply on the conversational or dis-course level. They serve “traffic” functions like: connectivity of texts and talk (“connec-tives”), turn taking activities and are of no relevance for the speech act meaning, speaker’s at-titudes, etc. Among these markers we also find invariant tag questions like eh? Right? Okay?, which may be subsumed under both classes of pragmatic/discourse markers. The course will first of all review the system of markers (use and function) and then focus on the developmental contexts, i.e. the historical axis of change of pragmatic markers in the his-tory of English, and the individual axis of language acquisition (acquiring pragmatic markers in L1, L2, or bilingual contexts) including the use of markers in the speech of adolescents. Inhalte und zu Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung, Literatur This course is designed for all BA students in their third year who require the course credit points for the E4 module “Advanced Language Skills“. Students may take the course in the winter or summer semester. The aim of this course is to acquaint the student with the problems and techniques of German-English translation and equip him/her with the skills necessary for producing stylisti-cally appropriate translations. The material for translation will be of two kinds: modern texts, mainly from journalistic and literary sources, and contrastive language exercises designed to illustrate significant sources of grammatical, lexical and stylistic errors in translation. One particular area we shall be focussing on, for example, will be the area of “false friends“ – these are pairs of words which, though they look alike, often have different meanings, such as Ambulanz / ambulance, adäquat / adequate. The recommended books German-English False Friends, books 1 and 2, which you will need in the course, can be purchased in the Seminar (8,-€ each). Useful dictionaries and practice books that can be used to help you in your trans-lation work will be discussed in class.
