For over 100 years, the suspension and funicular railways have been a part of the scenery on the picturesque Loschwitz hillside. Hereby, they not only serve as public transportation, they are also one of most signifi-cant tourist attractions in the enchanting capital city of Saxony.

A trip with Dresden’s cable cars is a special experience not only be-cause of their unique charm. In fact, the upper terminus of the suspen-sion railway offers a grandiose panorama view of Dresden and the Elbe valley. This is the perfect conclusion of a visit to Saxony’s capital.

Dresden’s funicular railway is one of the most beautiful in Germany. Not only the technical monument, but also its exceptional location on the picturesque Loschwitz hillside attracts many visitors year round. At the beginning of the 19th century, many of Dresden’s rich residents moved to Loschwitz, which resulted in the need for mobil- ity. Finally, in 1895, the funicular railway was opened. Since then, it has been running from the district of Loschwitz up to that of Weißer Hirsch. In 1994, it was out of commission for a longer period of time due to restoration work, which lasted for one year. On 22 October 1994, the funicular railway was reopened in all its brilliance, and has since been shuttling up and down the hill relentlessly.

Only six years after the funicular railway had opened, the suspen- sion railway opened on 6 May 1901. It has remained an engineering sensation up to today and is the oldest of its kind in the entire world. The layout is based on the overhead monorail system invented by an engineer from Cologne, Eugen Langen. With this system, the carriageway truss, on which the rail is fastened, is borne by 32 pin-ended and one fixed support. The carriage bodies are attached under the rail. The carriages are set into motion with a pull rope. The corresponding hauling engine is located in the upper terminus. Initially it was driven by a compound steam engine but, since 1909, a direct current motor has been used. This enables the carriages to run between the upper and lower terminus. In 2002, after extensive restoration work, it was able to resume operations in time for its 101st birthday. In 2016, it celebrated its 115th anniversary.
