It owes its rapid growth in importance to a number of clever moves made by the Abbey’s directorate. Relics of Saint Nazarius were found at an early date and the Benedictine Abbey was placed under the personal pro- tection of the king. Seigniory, architectural history and the humanities are the three pillars for the outstanding importance which is today assigned Charlemagne’s former imperial abbey. THE NEW LORSCH ABBEY WORLD HERITAGE AREA In 2014, 1,250 years after the abbey was founded, a large amount of the extensive refurbishing and extension work will be completed, thus greatly enhancing the attraction and range of experiences offered by the whole site. At the heart of the three kilometre-long circuit lies the abbey hill with the Königshalle hall, ecclesiastical fragments, the abbey wall and the newly created herb garden. In addition, the former tithe barn houses an information and museum centre where the intellectual history of the location is made tangible. The newly constructed Lauresham Carolingian noble court is unique in Europe, presenting the early Mediaeval manorial system in an exciting, visual form.

Upon your arrival in Lorsch, you first make for the World Heritage Area. We recommend you join in one of the regular guided tours through the abbey grounds. LUNCH IN THE SHADE OF THE WORLD HERITAGE SITE

We recommend a leisurely lunch in one of the restaurants – many have a summer terrace – in the centre of Lorsch, perhaps even with a look inside Königshalle hall.

IN THE CAROLINGIAN VILLAGE

In the afternoon, you can set off on foot or with a bicycle hired from the World Heritage Fleet to visit Lauresham, a Carolingian village where you will see what life was like for the townspeople and the families of the lord of the manor at the time of Charlemagne. After this visit, you will have time for a walk along the World Heritage Site circuit, past Altenmünster Abbey and the former tobacco shed.

A SOUVENIR FROM LORSCH

To round off your day, there is still time for a stroll through the pretty town of Lorsch, where in addition to convivial cafés you will be enticed by fine regional specialities such as herbal truffles and Lorsch maize corn bread.
