ust now I am sitting on my ter-

race in Sol de Mallorca.

Naked. In January. In the sun.

To my left the deep blue sea. To

my right pine woods. To my left

the gentle sound of the waves.

To my right birdsong. Glorious.

In Germany at the moment it is very cold. I am

grateful for this second home. Grateful for the

freedom to choose. Grateful for being financi-

ally independent. The success of the past 15

years still seems to me a little ‘unreal’. It has

resulted from a combination of goals, talents,

opportunities, concentration, consistency and

luck. But we all know the flip side of the coin.

Stress leads to overload. And things go

downhill from there. It is said that a fool learns

nothing from his mistakes, a clever man learns

from his mistakes and a wise man learns from

the mistakes of others.

In my search for wisdom I have found the

perfect place here – the perfect antidote. Stress

gives way to relaxation. Intensity gives way to

reflection. Getting stuck in gives way to letting

go. Pushing something through gives way to

thinking it through. The Island offers me a com-

pletely different way of working from the one I

usually allow myself. My everyday working life

as a motivational speaker and coach in a

wheelchair requires dedicated preparation.

Meticulous planning, carefully choreographed

routines and many many miles on the road.

For someone who is 90 percent disabled this

requires a great deal of effort. You can leave

nothing to chance. Any kind of deviation uses

up extra energy. And I hate that. Because it

means I have less to give to my clients. That

irritates me.

Our lives are accelerating so fast. The

increase in tempo, complexity and transparen-

cy is augmented by a constant striving for

growth. Perhaps sometimes you too think: just

a little more. Better health. More profit. More

energy. More freedom. More sex. More fulfil-

ment... in short the self-optimisation trap.

Nearly everyone wants to be happier and

more successful. What helps is changing your

viewpoint. I, too, strive for growth. But I invite

you to see things from a different perspective.

I hope you will allow me to offer you a litt-

le coaching. As I see it there are two ways to

view growth. Superficial growth. And inner

growth. Let us start with the superficial.

Anything new is incredibly attractive: a new

house. A finca perhaps. A new job. A new

relationship. A new goal... you know how it

goes. But great as these things are, they are

mostly just superficial.

Then there is the internal stuff: seeing your

‘old’ partner through new eyes. Seeing your

‘old’ job through new eyes... that requires you

to dig deep. From my point of view, both per-

spectives are attractive. But I beg you not to get

bogged down in one of the two extremes. I

have encountered rich people here on the

Island who appear to have it all. And now they

are simply bored with themselves. This is not

what freedom looks like. This is a pity. Please,

be smarter than that. Be wiser.

Now you may want to know whether I fol-

low my own advice and completely switch off

when I’m here. Not 100 percent. Mallorca has

proved to be a useful place to arrange mee-

tings with senior executives and CEOs. The

desire to hold discreet meetings at the highest

level has grown greatly over the past few

years. And here I am happy to break my own

rules.

my local. Cosy, delicious and just round

the corner...

wald. Links das ruhige Rauschen der Wellen.Rechts die Klänge der Vögel. Herrlich. Es ist inDeutschland aktuell empfindlich kalt. Ich bindankbar für diesen zweiten Wohnsitz. Dank-bar für die Freiheit, wählen zu können. Dank-bar, finanziell frei zu sein. Der Erfolg der letz-ten 15 Jahre kommt mir noch ganz „unwirk-lich“ vor. Er basiert wohl auf einer Kombina-tion von Zielen, Talenten, Chancen, Konzen-tration, Konsequenz und Glück. Doch wir allewissen um die Schattenseiten. Aus Anspan-nung wird Überspannung. Und dann geht esbergab. Es heißt: Der Narr lernt nichts aus sei-nen Fehlern, der Kluge lernt aus seinen Feh-lern, der Weise lernt aus den Fehlern anderer.

Um Weisheit bemüht, habe ich hier denidealen Platz – den idealen Gegenpol – gefun-den. Anspannung weicht Entspannung.Intensität weicht Reflexion. Zupacken weichtLoslassen. Durchziehen weicht Durchdenken.Die Insel bietet mir eine völlig andere Art zuarbeiten, als ich es mir sonst erlauben darf.Der Business-Alltag als Redner und Coach imRollstuhl verlangt eine dezidierte Vorbereitung.Penible Planung, einstudierte Gewohnheitenund viele Reisekilometer. Für einen zu 90Prozent Gelähmten ist der Aufwand extremhoch. Sie dürfen nichts dem Zufall überlassen.Abweichungen kosten Extra-Energie. Und dashasse ich. Denn diese steht dann weniger mei-nen Kunden zur Verfügung. Das nervt.

Unser Leben hat sich extrem beschleunigt.Die Zunahme von Tempo, Komplexität undTransparenz wird durch ein beständigesStreben nach Wachstum ergänzt. Vielleicht

denken Sie ja auch manchmal: immer ein biss-chen mehr. Mehr Gesundheit. Mehr Profit.Mehr Energie. Mehr Freiheit. Mehr Sex. MehrErfüllung ... Das führt in die Tiefe. Aus meiner Sicht sind

beide Blickwinkel reizvoll. Doch verzetteln Sie

sich bitte nicht in einem der beiden Extreme.

Ich bin auf der Insel schon reichen Menschen

begegnet, die scheinbar alles hatten. Und

heute sind sie von sich selbst gelangweilt. So

sieht Freiheit nicht aus. Das ist nur schade.

Seien Sie bitte klüger. Sprich weiser.

Jetzt möchten Sie vielleicht wissen, ob ich

mich selbst an meine Worte halte und hier

komplett abschalte? Nicht zu 100 Prozent.

Mallorca hat sich auch als Gesprächsort für

hohe Verantwortungsträger und Vorstände

bewährt. Der Wunsch nach diskreten

Gesprächen auf Top-Niveau hat in den letzten

Jahren stark zugenommen. Diese Ausnahmen

mache ich hier sehr gerne.
