Communities of Interest
What are Communities of Interest?Communities of Interest (COI) represent a network of students with similar academic interests and career goals. Learning experiences and initiatives within the COI framework will:
n promote student engagement and development
n enhance program persistence resulting in completion of a certificate or degree
n promote global citizenship and lifelong learning
COIs aim to provide structured, intentional, and meaningful experiences around academic support, social engagement, and workforce readiness. In general terms, COI activities would be:
n delivered in response to significant known and emerging barriers to student success
n supported by data and applied research
n purposefully designed for students across all campuses and not just for students who seek them out
n connected to Shark Path
n developed to help foster a sense of purpose
“We must be intentional, proactive and intrusive.
Student success does not arise by chance.”
(Tinto, 2006)
“ The findings from 20 years of research on under-
graduate education have been unequivocal: The
more actively engaged students are – with college
faculty and staff, with other students and with the
subject matter they study – the more likely they are
to learn, to stick with their studies and to attain their
academic goals.”
(McClenney, 2012)
