WEDDING BELLS Am OTHER SURPISES'riTiewl What a year t h i s has been! But pra i seth e Lord t h a t it has been a cons t ruc t ive andsurprising one. Certainly, the biggest surpr ise many of my r ea de rs a lr ea dy know about. What many of you thought would never happen, but some of you hoped and even prayed mighthappen, did . That ' s r igh t . . . on February 6,1993, I was off ic ia l ly married to Fong YukChi (Light) . ["Chi" as in GEE in gee-whiz!]

I f i r s t met Ligh t about seven years agowhen she br ie f ly came to work for the BibleCollege as a t r ans la to r for the radio program. She maintained contac t with the coll eg e, s tu dy in g Greek, helping with the f i e ldevangelism work, babysi t t ing for the Polingsand e t c . But our ge t t ing toge the r was agradual matter over the pas t couple years .Since we a r e bo th so much a l i k e and sha redthe same des i re to remain s ing le to be t t e rserve th e Lord, the decis ion to ge t marr iedwas a long and d i f f i cu l t one for each of us.That i s one reason why the decis ion appearedto be so sudden to so many, since we told noone u n t i l we ou r s e l v e s were c e r t a i n .

A few of you recent ly received a l e t t e rfrom my forwarding a ge nt s g iv in g some background on Light . Almost a l l of it was r i gh tbut a couple i tems need cor rec t ion . Lighthas an underg raduate deg ree in Class ica l

The Malaysian missionary teamAs to mar r i ed life and what I t h i nk o fi t , I have proved to be t rue what I alwayssaid: "I have barely enough time NOW to ge t

MongKok ChurchWe continue to grow in var ious ways a tMongKok. In April we had another 5 baptisms

    consis t ing o f one of the l e ade r ' s two ch i ldren , ano ther l e ade r ' s o lder daughter , stillanother young boy and a younger teenager .Thi s makes 5 new conver t s f o r each o f th el a s t three year s . We a l so have had the addit ion o f t h r ee new bab ies s ince January! Wel o s t one member to England (marriage) andone to Canada (study) . But we gained a

mother and her chi ldren through con tac t withthe (Ben Rees) Phil ippine congregation. Iwas th i s mother ' s young boy who was the 4thyoungster to be bapt ized. There is a growing increase in emphasis on evangelizing theolder se t , especial ly the p aren ts of a l l theyoung people who have entered Chris t . Thii s d i f f i c u l t and i s a mat t e r t h a t needs mucprayer. Meanwhile, we continue to crowd ounew premises af te r only a l i t t l e more than ayear,

Col l ege & Studen t NewsAccording to our records , we had 68 d ifferen t students taking classes with us in

watched with i n t e r e s t fo r no t i ce to show upof the changes Hong Kong's final Britishgovernor was proposing shortly af ter comingto the colony. In view of a l l the commotiontha t MFN and China 's hxaman r igh ts makes inCongress and th e news in the States, i t wasastounding that Chris Patten and his viewsreceived NO discernable coverage unt i l s ixweeks af ter the fact! By then, it was oldnews in Hong Kong, though treated in theStates as i f just happening. Even though,aPresident ia l elect ion was occurring, thefact tha t th e world 's largest seaport andthe t hi rd l ar ge st f inancial center was facing some major changes in her future withChina should have deserved some comment.

The changes Patten was ( s t i l l is ) proposing are welcomed by Hong Kong's people, but they seem to be coming about twelveyears too la te . Thatcher said that the 1978c l imate d id no t a l low discussion o f such

raided without warning during a meeting withabout 100 people present. Five of the members were singled out for severe physicaabuse. According to the reported testimonies, when some women t r ied to intervenetheir genitals were beaten by the soldierpolicemen. One of the five who were singledout for special treatment la ter died fromt he bea ting he received. Now, the governmenis imprisoning everyone they can find thawas from that and nearby vi l lages to t ry tocontrol th e sp re ad o f the news. Too late!

ComputingLast fa l l the MongKok church bought a, used '286 computer as a gi f t for the Bibl\coll ege in South Africa. After a l i t t le (!)adjustment and fiddling I was able to maki t work. With the help of one of our stu

\dents & his car I managed to take it down to.propositions. If Patten were not acting with 'the port and get it shipped out.London's consent, one could say the dif ference is that he i s a pol i t ic ian , not adiplomat. China has been reacting as i fPatten i s on his own, even though Majors hassaid th e o pp os it e.

Also, since las t fal l in exchange fopromised repair on two crowns ($$$), I havbeen working on a program for a local dent i s t tha t most of the missionaries go toThe program will keep track of his patientand t he i r treatment his tory, as well as themoney t h ey owe him .But more exci t ing is a recent development. As a wedding present, s ever al s tuden tpurchased a computer Bible program for uscal led The Online Bible. I t is a sharewarput out by a couple Baptist groups in Michigan and Canada. I t has 2 Hebrew O.T.'s,Greek N.T. 's , 3 English texts , and 3 Chinesversions. Additionally, i t has Strong 's Concordance and Thomson's reference notes (ansome special added notes supporting Calvin'doc t r ine of e l ec t i on ) . The program can pro/duce Bible tex t f i l e s in any of the foulanguages, but the Greek and Hebrew f i lei are phonetic equivalents, using Engli sh le tt e r s . To make a long s to ry s ho rt , I waencouraged to once more try to deciphe

' Taiwan ' s Chinese charac te r f i l e t h a t i s usewith the i r programsthis time with success//So, now I can resume working on a Chines/ wordprocessing program, since I don' t havto worry about also creating a l l the Chinescharacters. Except that MY program will alsobe able to process Greek and Hebrew, as welas English or Chinese. And i t should alsobe eas i e r to use than the present , widelused program. A number of our students havalready expressed avid in teres t in my complet ing th is program!

To the many of you who gave specialwedding gi f t offer ings, THANK YOU! Sincethe wedding semi-Chinese t rad i t ional , it wasquite expensive. I t could have be en verymuch more so, but praise God for His mercy, and Light 's fa ther ' s graciousness. As itwas, THANKS to you, we about broke even onthe expenses. I do hope to send a personalnote of thanks to each of you, but I hopeyou wil l understand, it might be l a t e r thansooner. To several speci al f ri end s, i f you didnot receive specia l not ice of the wedding,my ap olo gies. -I did NOT forget you! Basedon s eve r a l t h a t came back in th e mai l , somea dd r e s s s t i c k e r s came un s t u c k .

    Speaking o f fi na nc es , I won't take thetime now to deta i l l a s t year ' s giving, but Ido want to say that your giving once againoutdid my using. PTL! and thank you verymuch! So fa r THIS year, even though I hadto move in to a much more expensive f l a t , myexpenditures s t i l l have not kept up with, your gracious contributions. In fact, whenever I spend more, you a l l j u s t give evenmore! This i s t ru ly a miss ionary ' s dreamcome t rue! :> That i s not to say t ha t Ihave been spending your g i f t s in r io tousl iving. I have not had the s t rength nor t imeto so indulge! :> But Light .has had a few/extra doctor bi l l s lately and inflation,though slowed somewhat, i s s t i l l much higherthan in the U.S. Also, the exchange ra te i sdown, so I get ten cents less for eachdol la r t raded. Briefly, l a s t year unt i lFebniary th i s year , each month I was spending about US$750: $370 on housing and u t i li t i e s , $100 fo r the Bible col lege , and $280on persona l requi remen ts . Since Febn^y ,th is has increased by about $100-$200 forth e higher ren t and doctor bi l l s . As ofApri l 22 , there was $5,333 in the currentaccount , $6500 in the furlough/emergencyaccount , and about $1500 in savings. This i sa little bit MORE t h an th e same t ime lastyear. PTL! Thank you a l l f or s ha rin g inth is minist ry . May you also share in theLord ' s r ewa rds !

As you pray, please remember:** Light ' s heal th and tha t of the baby** Ask th e Lord to send more workers to th e

f ie ld . The Polings found only two t en tat ive prospects during the i r furlough l asyear. The f ie lds cannot be "r ipe untoharvest" i f no workers go for th to sowth e s eed !** The Bible College and i t s students. Wwould still l ike to have some peoplepledge regular support in order to planfuture spending. So far the Lord hasprovided enough to meet the bi l l s throughtu i t ion fees and specia l offerings, but h i s makes it d i f f i cu l t to expandAccording to our students and our ownobservations, we are one of the few Biblecolleges in th is par t of the world thaoffers a qxiality education f or Ch ri st ia nswho want to be t t e r serve , or even ju sunderstand the Bible more thoroughly.

** Ask the Lord to provide addi t ional sup/ port for the David Poling and Ben Reesfamil ies . Nathaniel Pol ing wil l be s t a r ting non-home schooling and Matthew Reet wil l be graduating High School and goingto the Sta tes fo r co l l ege . Megan Rees i salso still in an English-language schoohere in Hong Kong, which has ju s t near lydoub l ed its f e e s and c u t its d i s coun t s .At a t ime when some churches, a re c uttin gback the i r missions support , or (horrors)r eapp rop ri at ing t he funds to other f ie ldsth is can be very s t r e s s fu l for workerwho a re a l r eady on marginal budgets .*^Pray that Beijing's leaders will finally"/ come to fear the Lord and His judgements,Many recent internal events in China showt ha t human l i f e is no t valu ed ver y highly^by the government, unless that life can' demonstra te u t i l i t y approved of by thel e a d e r s .Pray tha t the TRUTH of Jesus ' gospel wil

    'b e proc la imed th roughout the world, even/ in American churches. The!re are so man' ha l f - t ru ths and out r ight Hes . ( c f NIV'"translation" of Fsajm 5l:5!) being^spread that i t is difficult for people toknow" what i s t rue . Remember, i f theFather REALLY intended Jesus to se t up aphysical kingdom o f Is ra el/God on ear thwhen he came the f i r s t t ime (as a vasbody of l i t e r a tu r e and bel ievers maint a in) , then Jesus was NOT s en t to d ie andbr ing salvat ion from Sin, Satan andDea t h !
