Smíchov, das zentrale Viertel des Stadtteils Prag 5,liegt am linken Ufer der Moldau in der Nachbarschaftdes weltbekannten historischen Kern der Stadt Prag.Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erhielt es Stadt-recht, im Jahre 1922 wurde es Bestandteil von GroßPrag. Den überwiegend industriellen Charakterbehielt Smíchov bis zum Ende der 80er des ver-gangenen Jahrhunderts, wobei es sich in den 90erJahren in ein bedeutendes Geschäfts-, Adminis-trations- und Kulturzentrum der Hauptstadt derTschechischen Republik zu verwandeln begann.

Und gerade seinerzeit begann auch das sichdynamisch entwickelnde Prager Viertel spürbar einegroße moderne Bibliothek zu vermissen. Dabeiwurde gerade in Smíchov bereits im Jahre 1860 dieBürgerliche öffentliche Bibliothek gegründet, dieerste allgemeine Bibliothek auf dem Gebiet derHauptstadt. Im Jahre 1922 wurde die allgemeineBibliothek, die damals ihren Sitz im Gebäude desStädtischen Elektrizitätswerkes hatte, zur Filiale derBibliothek der Hauptstadt Prag. Danach siedelte sienoch mehrere Male um, die vorhandenen Räumeentsprachen nicht mehr der erforderlichen Entwick-lung der zu erbringenden Leistungen. Umso mehrbegrüsste die Stadtbibliothek in Prag zu Beginn desneuen Jahrhunderts die durch den heutigenBürgermeister Dr. jur. Milan Janãík initiierte Absichtder Vertretung des Stadtteils Prag 5, in den Räumendes 1. Stocks des Objektes der Smíchover Markt-halle eine neue Bibliothek zu errichten.

Smíchov, the central part of the City District of Prague5, lies on the left bank of the river Vltava, close by theworld-famous historical heart of Prague. At the begin-ning of the 20th century it was raised to town status,and in 1922 it became part of Greater Prague. Smíchovpreserved its predominantly industrial character until theend of the 1980s, and in the 1990s started to becomethe major new commercial, administrative and culturalcentre of the capital of the Czech Republic.

And so it began to be felt that this dynamicallydeveloping district of Prague was lacking in a large,modern library. In the year 1860 the Civil PublicLibrary was established in Smíchov itself, the firstpublic general library in the capital. In 1922 the gen-eral library, housed in the city power station building,became a branch of the Library of the Capital City ofPrague. It moved several times after this, althoughcertain premises were not suited to the developmentof services that was required. At the beginning of thenew century the Municipal Library of Pragueembraced the plan of the Corporation of the CityDistrict of Prague 5, initiated by the present mayor,JUDr. Milan Janãík, to build a new library in the roomson the 1st floor of the Smíchov marketplace site.

Smíchov, centrální ãtvrÈ Mûstské ãásti Praha 5, leÏí na levém bfiehu Vltavy, v sousedství svûtoznáméhohistorického jádra Prahy. Zaãátkem 20. století byl pov˘‰en na mûsto, v roce 1922 se stal souãástí VelkéPrahy. PfieváÏnû prÛmyslov˘ ráz si Smíchov zachoval aÏ do konce 80. let minulého století, kdy se v 90.letech zaãal mûnit v nové v˘znamné obchodní, administrativní i kulturní centrum hlavního mûsta âeskérepubliky.

A tehdy také dynamicky se rozvíjející praÏská ãtvrÈ zaãíná citelnû postrádat velkou moderní knihovnu.Pfiitom právû na Smíchovû byla jiÏ v roce 1860 zaloÏena Obãanská vefiejná knihovna, první vefiejná obec-ní knihovna na území hlavního mûsta. V roce 1922 se obecní knihovna, sídlící tehdy v budovû mûstskéelektrárny, stala poboãkou Knihovny hl. mûsta Prahy. Poté se je‰tû nûkolikrát stûhovala, dané prostoryv‰ak uÏ nevyhovovaly potfiebnému rozvoji poskytovan˘ch sluÏeb. O to více Mûstská knihovna v Praze uví-tala na poãátku nového století zámûr Zastupitelstva Mûstské ãásti Praha 5, iniciovan˘ dne‰ním starostouJUDr. Milanem Janãíkem, vybudovat novou knihovnu v prostorách 1. patra objektu Smíchovské trÏnice.

Knihovna Smíchov tak získala pro své pÛsobi‰tûoriginální prostory secesní trÏnice z roku 1907,projektované architektem dr. Aloisem âensk˘m,poskytující prostfiedí s osobitou atmosférou.

Stavební náklady rekonstrukce ãinily 33,8 mil.Kã. Nejvût‰í ãást z nich hradila Mûstská ãástPraha 5 – 19,3 mil. Kã, dále pfiispûlo Hlavní mûstoPraha – 13 mil. Kã a Mûstská knihovna v Praze 1,5mil. Kã ze svého rozpoãtu. Náklady na mobiliáfia v˘poãetní techniku ve v˘‰i 7, 9 mil. Kã hradilarovnûÏ MKP.

Smíchov Library then found new, original premises inthe Art Nouveau marketplace, dating from 1907 anddesigned by the architect Dr. Alois âensk˘; this build-ing offered an atmosphere that was full of character.

Welcome to the libraryOn D-Day – 24th October 2003 - the mayor, JUDr.Milan Janãík, opened the new library in the presenceof representatives of the Municipal Council of the Cap-ital City of Prague, other representatives of CityDistrict Prague 5, and specialised librarians from thepublic sphere.

The costs involved in the reconstruction amountedto 33.8 million CZK. The bulk of this, 19.3 million CZK,was paid by the City District of Prague 5; the CapitalCity of Prague contributed 13 million CZK and theMunicipal Library of Prague 1.5 million CZK from itsown budget. The cost of the furnishings and comput-er hardware, totalling 7.9 million CZK, was also paidby MLP.

Die Bibliothek Smíchov erlangte so als Wirkungs-stätte originale Räume der im Jugendstil errichtetenMarkthalle aus dem Jahre 1907, projektiert durch denArchitekten Dr. Alois âensk˘, die ein Umfeld mit ganzeinzigartiger Atmosphäre bieten.

Willkommen in der Bibliothek Der Tag X – Am 24. Oktober 2003 eröffnete derBürgermeister Dr. jur. Milan Janãík den Betrieb derneuen Bibliothek in Anwesenheit der Vertreter desMagistrats der Hauptstadt Prag, weitererRepräsentanten des Stadtbezirks Prag 5 und derbibliothekarischen Fachöffentlichkeit.

Die Baukosten der Rekonstruktion betrugen 33,8Mio. CZK. Den größten Teil davon trug der Stadt-bezirk Prag 5 – 19,3 Mio. CZK, ferner steuerte dieStadtbibliothek in Prag aus ihrem Budget 1,5 Mio.CZK bei. Die Kosten für das Mobiliar und die EDV inHöhe von 7,9 Mio. CZK übernahm ebenfalls dieStadtbibliothek in Prag.

The library serves the general public as a contempo-rary culturally educational and social centre and isopen to everyone as a place to find information, tolearn, to meet people, have fun and relax. The library also opens its doors to the non-readerpublic for a wide range of cultural events. These aremarked not only by the sheer number of them(around 300 events per year for more than 6 000 vis-itors), but also by the ever increasing diversity of whatis on offer. From traditional events, through concerts,creative workshops, programs presenting nationalminorities to exhibitions showing the works of profes-sional and amateur authors.

Durch das breite Spektrum der Kulturveranstaltungenöffnet sich die Bibliothek auch in Richtung der Nicht-leseröffentlichkeit. Charakteristisch ist nicht nur ihreerhebliche Anzahl (jährlich etwa 300 Veranstaltungenfür mehr als 6 000 Besucher), sondern auch das sichständig erweiternde Typenangebot. Von traditionellenVeranstaltungen, über Konzerte, Künstler-Work-shops, Präsentationsprogramme ethnischer Min-derheiten bis zu Ausstellungen künstlerischer Werkeprofessioneller und Amateurautoren.

Zwei eingebaute Galerien dienen den Kindern undJugendlichen als Studier- und Lesesaal, sowie auchals Klubraum. Sie sind ein Ort nichtformellerBegegnungen, ermöglichen Präsentationen dar-stellender und literarischer Arbeiten, das Veranstaltenvon Konzerten, Vernissagen, Autorenlesungen, sowieauch Tanz- und Theateraufführungen.

Dvû vestavûné galerie slouÏí dûtem a mládeÏi jako studovna, ãítárna i klubovna. Jsoumístem neformálních setkání, umoÏÀují prezentace v˘tvarn˘ch a literárních prací,pofiádání koncertÛ, vernisáÏí, autorsk˘ch ãtení a recitaãních soutûÏí i taneãních a di-vadelních pfiedstavení.

The building includes two galleries for children to useas a study, reading-room and clubroom. They areplaces for informal meetings, offer a venue for thepresentation of creative and literary work, concerts,private viewings, author readings and recital compe-titions, as well as dance and theatre performances.

The computer classroom has 12 workstations, while the clubroom offers 25 places. Both allow for and build onthe further education both of readers and librarians, and both are accessible outside normal library opening hours.

The library offers it registered readers free access not only to the Internet (more than 28 000 visitors make use ofthis service each year), but also to several electronic databases such as: Newton, the Czech National Bibliography,EBSCO and ASPI.

Readers can make the most of the online database with remote CO.TO. JE (WHAT IS IT) access, the OxfordReference Online Premium, and Proquest from the comfort of their home, office or school.

The attractive surroundings of the reconstructed historic building, together with the top-class services it offers,makes it the logical destination for a number of excursions by the general public from at home and abroad, andis frequently visited by representatives from foreign institutions working in partnership with CD Prague 5.

Der Computerlehrraum hat eine Kapazität von 12 Arbeitsstationen, der Klubraum bietet 25 Plätze. Beideermöglichen und erweitern die Gelegenheiten der Weiterbildung der Leser, jedoch auch der Bibliothekare, beidesind auch außerhalb der Öffnungszeit der Bibliothek zugänglich.

Die Bibliothek bietet den registrierten Lesern den unentgeltlichen Zugang zum Internet (jährlich wird dieseMöglichkeit durch mehr als 28 000 Besucher genutzt), jedoch auch zu einigen elektronischen Datenbanken wiez.B. Newton, die Tschechische Nationalbibliografie, EBSCO und ASPI.
