Next Story im Reich der Mitte: Die dritte Etappe 2016Haben uns die beiden ersten Etappen durch eine Vielzahl unter-schiedlicher Länder gebracht, führt uns die dritte durch China, Nord-korea und endet in Hongkong.

Auf den Teiletappen sind die Hotels und Unterkünfte größten-teils gebucht. Die Mannschaft des Organisationsteams steht ebenfalls wieder bereit, um uns zu begleiten und das zügige Vorwärtskommen zu ermöglichen.

Einige Themen zur Erinnerungn Überprüfen Sie noch einmal Ihre persönliche Ausstattung. Sie sollte nicht zu umfassend sein, da uns nur beschränkter Raum für Gepäck zur Verfügung steht. Verzichten Sie auf Hartschalen-koffer, wählen Sie stattdessen ein wasser- und staubdichtes, weiches Gepäckstück. Die Motorradfahrer sollten vor allem an einen zugelas-senen Integralhelm und geeignete Motorradkleidung denken.

n Lassen Sie sich von Ihrer Arzt-praxis oder Ihrer Apotheke eine kleine Reiseapotheke zusammen-stellen. Denken Sie auch an die notwendigen Impfungen.

This year, a first-aid course and driving training are strongly recommended. Any participant who has not yet attended one of our courses, or does not already have this training because of his work, should register for the course on either 2–3 April or 9–10 April 2016.

Next Story in the Middle Kingdom:Stage Three 2016 While the first two stages brought us through many different countries, the third takes us to China and North Korea, and ends in Hong Kong.

Hotels and accommodation have mostly been booked along the differ-ent legs of the trip. The organisation team is also once again ready to accompany us and ensure that we make rapid progress.

A couple of points to remembern Check your personal items again. Don’t bring too much as we have only limited space for luggage. Do not bring hard-shell cases; take a soft-shell waterproof and dustproof bag instead. Very important for motorbike riders: don’t forget an ap-proved integral helmet and suitable motorbike clothing.

n Ask your GP or pharmacy to put a small travel pharmacy together for you. Remember to get the necessary vaccinations.

第一阶段：哈尔滨出发。目的地北京。

Wir starten unsere Reise durch China im Nordosten des Landes, in den Ebenen der Mandschurei. Vor uns liegen Etappen ohne Schotterpisten und wilde Berglandschaften. Eine der größeren Provinzhauptstädte ist Harbin, ein Zentrum der Schwer-industrie und ein Handelszentrum, das Brücken nach Russland schlägt.

Über Changchun erreichen wir die alte Kaiserstadt Shen yang mit ihrem Palast und gleich zwei Kaisergräbern. Sowohl der Begründer der mand-schurischen Macht, Nurhaci, als auch der Gründer der Quing-Dynastie liegen hier begraben und haben ihre beeindruckenden Bauwerke hinter-lassen.

Über die Brücke von Dandong tau-chen wir dann in Nordkorea ein. In der Hauptstadt Pyongyang gewinnen wir einen Eindruck vom Leben in einer gesellschaftlich, kulturell und politisch vollkommen anderen Welt – eine mit Sicherheit spannende Erfahrung.

Nach Panjin und Chengde kommen wir schließlich nach Peking, in die Hauptstadt Chinas. Vom Kaiserpalast bis hin zum Mao-Mausoleum – Zeug-nisse einer in Jahrtausenden zählen-den Geschichte tun sich vor uns auf.

We will start our trip through China in the northeast of the country in the plains of Manchuria. Ahead of us lie journeys without gravel roads and wild mountain land-scapes. One of the bigger pro-vincial capitals is Harbin, a hub of heavy industry and trading centre that is building bridges with Russia.

Passing through Changchun, we will come to the ancient imperial city of Shenyang which features a palace and the tombs of no fewer than two emperors. Both Nurhaci, who consolidated Manchurian power, and the founder of the Qing dynasty are buried here and have left behind impressive edifices.

Crossing the Dandong bridge, we will then immerse ourselves in North Korea. In the capital Pyongyang, we will get an idea of life in a world that is entirely differ-ent from our own in social, cultural and political terms. This will cer-tainly be an exciting experience.

After visiting Panjin and Chengde, we will finally reach Beijing, the Chinese capital. From imperial palace to the Mao Mausoleum we will be surrounded by the witness-es to millennia of history.

第二阶段：北京出发。目的地成都。

So richtig zur Größe und Blüte kam unser Ausgangspunkt Peking in den Zeiten der Ming Dynastie (nach 1368). Eine riesige Stadtmauer entstand, außerdem im 15. Jahrhundert die Bauten, die wir besuchen werden: der Kaiserpalast, auch die Verbotene Stadt genannt, der Himmelstempel und andere Monumente. Viele Jahr-hunderte war sie die Stadt der Kaiser.

Ein besonderes historisches Erlebnis wird Pingyao bereithalten, die Stadt, die uns in die Ming-Zeit vor 300 Jahren zurückbringt. Kleine geduck-te schwarze Ziegelhäuser prägen unverändert das zentrale Stadtbild. Hier wurde die erste Bank in China gegründet, das erste Papiergeld und die ersten Schecks ausgegeben. Die Stadt beherrschte zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts den chinesischen Finanzsektor, ehe Hongkong und Shanghai die Hauptrolle übernahmen.

Dann das absolute Muss auf unserer Reise: Xi’an und die Terrakotta-Sol-daten, die heute noch das (nach wie vor verschlossene) Grab des ersten Kaisers von China bewachen. Sie warteten seit ca. 2.200 Jahren auf ihre Entdeckung und sind heute eine der größten archäologischen Sensationen.

Die Stadt Xi’an selbst war während der Tang-Dynastie von ca. 600 bis 900 n.Chr. die wichtigste Station der Seidenstraße. Von hier – so sagt man – sei das Papier zu uns nach Europa aufgebrochen...

Our starting point, Beijing, truly reached the height of its power and development in the time of the Ming dynasty (after 1368). A gigantic city wall was built, followed in the 15th century by the edifices that we will be visiting: the Imperial Palace, also known as the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and other monu-ments. This was the imperial city for many centuries.

Pingyao, a city that takes us back to the Ming period 300 years ago, will be a very special historical experi-ence. Small brick houses, squat and black, still dominate the central cityscape. This is where China’s first bank was founded; the first paper money and the first cheques were issued here. The city was the heart of the Chinese financial sector up to the end of the 19th century before Hong Kong and Shanghai took over this leading role.

Then we come to the absolute must on our journey: Xi’an and the soldiers of the Terracotta Army who continue to guard the (still sealed) grave of Chi-na’s first emperor. This army waited around 2,200 years to be discovered and today is one of the world’s great-est archaeological sensations.

During the Tang dynasty from c. 600 to 900 A.D., the city of Xi’an was one of the most important stops along the Silk Road. It is said that paper started its journey to Europe from here.

我们此次的出发地北京，是在明朝时期(1368年以后)才达到真正的强盛和繁荣。一座巨大的城墙拔地而起，还有我们将参观的15世纪建筑：故宫，又称紫禁城，天坛等古迹。这里曾在多个世纪都是皇帝的都城。

平遥将展开一段特殊历史体验，带我们重回300年前的明朝时期。低矮的小黑砖房依旧坐落在城市中央。在这里成立了中国第一家银行，发行第一批纸币和支票。直到19世纪末，该城市掌握着中国的金融命脉，先于香港和上海扮演着主要角色。

然后是我们此次行程的必游之地：西安和兵马俑，他们至今依然守卫着(仍处于关闭状态的)中国第一个皇帝的墓穴。被发现时，他们已埋于地下约2200年，是当今最伟大的考古发现之一。

城市西安在约公元600至900年的唐朝时期，是丝绸之路上最重要的一站。造纸术就是从这里 - 人们说 - 传到我们欧洲...

Wir beginnen die dritte Etappe 2016 in Chengdu, einer modernen Groß-stadt mit mehr als 10 Millionen Ein-wohnern. Seit mehr als 2.000 Jahren ist sie das kulturelle Zentrum West- und Südchinas. Zahlreiche gut er-haltene Tempel konkurrieren mit der Architektur einer modernen, lebendi-gen Stadt, die oft historisierend die traditionellen Formen aufnimmt.

Nach Xichang und dem Lugu-See erreicht die Expedition Lijiang. Die Stadt ist für ihre Architektur bekannt und gilt als hervorragend erhaltenes Beispiel der städtischen Bauweise im alten China. Die Bauten gehen auf den Anfang der Yuan-Dynastie (etwa Mitte 13. Jahrhundert) zurück und strahlen eine altertümliche Einfachheit aus.

In Guilin zeigt sich eine ganz andere Geschichte vor uns – die Erdge-schichte. Erdbewegungen haben Kalkschichten nach oben gedrückt. Im Lauf der Jahrmillionen entstan-den durch Wind und Wasser bizarre Berge, unterirdische Höhlen und eine faszinierende Landschaft.

Der Abschluss: Wirtschaftsgeschich-te. Hongkong war erst Fischerge-meinde, dann Schmugglernest, dann Marinestützpunkt von Großbritannien und schließlich eines der wichtigsten Finanz- und Handelszentren der Welt. Hier gehen Ost und West eine gelun-gene Synthese ein, mit viel Flexibilität und Pragmatismus.

We start the third leg of the 2016 expedition in Chengdu, a modern megacity with over 10 million inhab-itants. For more than 2,000 years it has been the cultural centre of West and South China. Numerous well-pre-served temples compete with the architecture of a modern and vibrant city that often makes reference to traditional styles.

After Xichang and Lake Lugu the expedition arrives in Lijiang. The city is famed for its architecture and is re-garded as an exceptionally well-pre-served example of urban construction in old China. The buildings date back to the beginning of the Yuan dynasty (around the middle of the 13th centu-ry) and exude an ancient simplicity.

In Guilin a completely different story is revealed to us – the history of the earth. Earth movements have pressed layers of limestone upwards. Over the course of millions of years, wind and water have created bizarre mountains, subterranean caves, and a fascinating landscape.

The finale: Commercial history. Hong Kong started off as a fishing village. It subsequently became a nest of smugglers, a British naval base and then, finally, one of the world’s most important financial and trading cen-tres. This is a place where East and West enter into a successful synthesis with much flexibility and pragmatism.

Problematische HygieneVor zehn Jahren baute die Schule auf ihrem Gelände einen Wasch-raum, der allerdings nur Platz für zwei Schüler bot. Für die 111 Schüler war er absolut unzurei-chend und ist mittlerweile so bau-fällig, dass er nicht mehr benutzt werden kann. Die Körperpflege leidet, die Gefahr von Krankheiten ist gestiegen.

Neue Waschräume geplantProgroup und ihre Partner werden mit einer Spende dafür sorgen, dass unter Leitung der World Vision-Verantwortlichen vor Ort neue Waschräume mit Solarhei-zung eingerichtet werden können. Die Schüler können sich dann viel besser um ihre Körperpflege kümmern und kommen in den Genuss erneuerbarer Energien. Außerdem wird der Verbreitung von Krankheiten vorgebeugt. Auch die tägliche Wartung und Reini-gung übernehmen die Schüler – so können sie lernen, Verantwortung zu übernehmen und ihre organisa-torischen Fähigkeiten schulen. Wir sind gespannt und freuen uns auf den Besuch in Chufeng.

Lijiang, die Stadt der NaxiIn der dritten Etappe der Next Story-Expedition kommen wir in die Stadt Lijiang im Südwesten Chinas. Sie ist das kulturelle Zent-rum der Naxi, einer der 55 ethni-schen Minderheiten, die von der chinesischen Regierung offiziell anerkannt werden. Direkt an den Flughafen von Lijiang grenzt der Kreis Yulong an, der einzige auto-nome Kreis der Naxi. Hier leben 211.000 Menschen, die Gesell-schaft ist von der Landwirtschaft in der Bergregion geprägt.

Eine Region mit viel ArmutDie Zahl der Menschen unterhalb der Armutsgrenze ist in Yulong sehr hoch. In einer der am wei-testen abgelegenen Gemeinden, in Chufeng, hat World Vision ein Hilfsprojekt etabliert. Hier gibt es ein Internat, in dem 111 der insge-samt 238 Schüler der Grundschule Chufeng untergebracht sind. Zur Schule gehören ein Unterrichts-gebäude, ein Schlafsaal für die Schüler, eine Kantine, eine öffentli-che Toilette und ein Spielplatz.

Hygiene challengesTen years ago, the school built a washroom on its grounds, but it was only big enough to hold two pupils at a time. It was absolutely inadequate for the 111 children, and has meanwhile become so dilapidated that it can no longer be used. Physical cleanliness is suffering, and the risk of disease has increased.

New washrooms plannedProgroup and its partners will be making a donation to ensure that, under the guidance of World Vision staff on the ground, new washrooms with solar heating can be built. It will be much easier for the schoolchildren to attend to their personal hygiene, and they will benefit from renewable energies. Furthermore, the spread of diseases will be prevented. The pupils themselves will handle the daily upkeep and cleaning of the washrooms. In this way they will learn to take responsibility, and hone their organisational skills. We are excited about this project and are looking forward to our visit to Chufeng.

Lijiang, the city of the Nahki peopleOn the third leg of the Next Story Expedition, we will be travelling to the city of Lijiang in southwest China. It is the cultural centre of the Nahki people, one of the 55 ethnic minorities who are offi-cially recognised by the Chinese government. The Nahki people’s only autonomous district, Yulong, is right beside Lijiang Airport. It is home to 211,000 people. Society in this mountainous region is dominated by agriculture.

It is a very poor regionThe number of people living below the poverty line is very high in Yulong. World Vision has set up an aid project in one of the most remote communities, Chufeng. At the local primary school there are 238 pupils, 111 of whom are boarders. The school is made up of a teaching building, a dormitory for the pupils, a canteen, a public toilet and a playground.
