VORWORT

Der :"Jame Carlos Gardel ist bis heute untrennbar mit der Musik des Tango verbunden. Nicht nur durch seine 7.ahlreichen Kompositionen, sondern ;mch durch die charisrnatische Stimme des S3ngers und sein schauspielerisches Talent wurde Gardel ;~ Is KUnsder und Interpret seiner Werke zu einer der bedeutendsten MusikerpersOnlichkeiten der ersten Halrte des 20. j ahrhundens, die nkht nur in ihrer Wahlheimat Argentinien aJs Legcnde verehrt wird. Carlos Garde!, eigentJich Charles Romuald GardCs ( • 11. Dezember 1890 in Toulouse, Frankreich; t 24. Juni 1935 bei einem FlugzeugungiUck in Medellin, Kolumbien), machte den Tango weltweit popular und war der erste und vielleicht e inzige argenti· nische W'eitstar im Showbusiness, dessen Bedeu-tung sparer h&hstens noch von Astor Piazzolla erreicht wird. Trotz seines frUhen Todes hle ihen Gardels Tangos KJassiker, auf die kein ernst zu nehmender Interpret verzichten kann.

The name Carlos Garde! is still inextricably linked with tango music, even today. It was no t just OCcause of his numerous compositions, bm also because of his charismatic voice and actin~ talents that Garde!, as artist and performer of his own works, beGune one of the most important musical personalities of the first half of the 20th century, revered as a legend far beyond his adopted horne of Argentina. Carlos Garde! - in reality Charles Romuald GardCs, born in Toulouse on l l December 1890 and killed in an a ir acciden1 on 24 j une 1935 in Medellin, Colombia - made the tango internationally popular and was the first and perhaps only Argeminian superstar in show business, enjoying a status subsequently attained only, a t most, by Aswr Piazzolla. Despite his early death Gardcl's tangos remain classics, which no performer who aspires to be taken seriously can ignore.

Fiir dieses Heft habe ich einige von Gardels popu-Jarsten Tangos ausgewahlt und fur zwei \ 'ioloncelli arrangien. Der Klang des Violoncellos eignet sich hervorragend, urn dem musikalischen Reichrum einer vemrmten Gernelnschaft von Eimvanderern in Argentiniens Vergangenheit klanglich nachzu-spliren und die Faszination und den Glamour von Gardcls Tangomusik aufleben zu lassen. Beide Stimmen liegen im miuleren Sch.wierigkeitsgrad, d ie Mclodien bringcn immer wiedcr neue klang-liche und rhythmische Elemente ins Spiel, urn Technik und Zus..1.mmenspiel der jungen Musiker zu trainieren. Und nicht zuletzt s ind s ie e in idca-ler Einstieg in die tiefgrundige Musik des Tango, dcrcn Lebendigkeit und Vielse itigkeit nicht nu r SpaS macht, sondem auch ganz neue Ausdmcks-mOglichkeiten bereith;tlt.

For this album I have chosen some of Gardel's most popular tangos and arranged them for two violoncellos. '11-Je timbre of the violoncello is exceptionaJJy we ll suited to evoking in .sound the musical riches of nn impov~rished community of immigrants in Argentina 's past, as well as to making the fascination and glamour of Gardcl's tango music come al1\·e again. Both parts are of medium difficult~. and the melodies repeatedly introduce new dements of tone product ion and rhythm, tra ining young musicians in technique and ensemble playmg. And, last bul not least, these duets are an ideal introduction to the profound music of the tango, whose vitality and versalility are not only fun. but which also holds totally new means of expression in store.

Aujourd'hui encore, le nom de Carlos Garde! reste indissociablc de Ia musique tango. Ses nombreuses com{X>sitions, mais aussi sa voix charismatique et ses talents d'actcur lui om valu de dcvenir, a Ia fois comme auteur ct interprete de ses ceuvres, l'un des rnusiciens les plus marquants de Ia premiCrc moiliC du X:Xe siC:cle, aujourd'hui venere comme une !Cgende dans son pays d 'adopt:ion -!'Argentine - et au..(lel3. Carlos Garde!, de son vrai nom Charles Romuald GardCs (nC: le J J dCcembre 1890 3 Toulouse, France ; t le 24 juin 1935 dans un accident d 'avion a Medellin, en Colombie), fit conna'itre le tango d-.ns le monde emier et fut le premier, et peut-etre le seul Argentin ~ devenir une srar tnondiale du show·business, popularitC au mieux Cgalee plus lard p.ar le seul Astor Piazzolla . Malgre sa disparition prematurCe, Gardellaisse une ceuvrc immense et ses tangos som des classiques qu'aucun inrerprCte sCrieux nc peut se pennetue d 'ignorer.

Pour ce recueil, j'ai sCiectionne et 3.I'T2tlfF paul" deux violoncelles quelques-uns des tangos lies pbs. populaires de Garde!. La sonoritC du 'ioloD..-dlr-fait merveille pour incarner Ia ric hesse m~ dr )'Argentine de son epoque, nee de Ia p3U\"re"'..e dx:a. laquelle vivaient les immigres, et ressusciler ~ le glamour des tangos de Gardel et Ia fa.."
