    WITH THE

    NI HOLSONS

    February, 1976

    Dear Chr i s t i an Friends ,

    Greetings

    in

    the

precious name of Christ our Saviour.

    thank God

    for

    His

    b le ssin gs- Vernita

    and I had to

    leave

    early from

    the meeting

    of the Missionaries

    at Willem

    Pretorius, January 16th

    to

    20th

    because she

    was

    sick.

    After

    we

    got

    home

she spent from Tuesday night until Friday morning the

    local hospi ta l-

    But

    since

    that

    time

    has been

    feeling

    better

    than she

    has

    fe l t

    for

    months- She

    is

    helping

    Lucille Stanley teach sewing

    to the s tudents

at school and has been working

    to p repare

    l e ssons fo r th e m in i s te r s wives and women

    o f

    th e church .

The meeting of the missionaries at Willem Pretorius was a great blessing to all who

were present- Those who planned the program did a

    good

job as well as did those who

    led

the discussion periods- Because South Africa has been having good rains, i t was cool

    and cloudy and not at

    all

    hot- The animals were out

    in the

open so that all had good

    viewing-

    ._The l^s.t

    week^d_we

made_a quick tr ip to Cradock, Brother Qwemesha from

    school

went along with us- The church has been

    in

    a turmoil over a

    prcku^which

    some or tne

    men

made a down payment on without the consent

    of

the church. The minister has passed

    i t

    into

    the

    hands

    of

    the poli ce -

    The

    man

    to whom

    i t

    was

    given

    asked

    that

    they

    call me

    to

    come and

    one

    other man from

    outs ide

    the church who

    could

    t r ans l a t e from t he i r minute

    b o o k s .

    Sunday morning,

    we

met with the minister and a large number of the men of the church

They said they wanted to finish the business. If they got the record books and t i t le to

    the ca r

    okey and

    i f

    they

    did not i t

    was

    also

    okay; they were going no

    further. After the

af te rnoon se rv ice

    the o ther s ix

    men

    came to t a lk

    w ith us. We asked

    them

    i

    they

    were

willing to give back the books and t i t le they held. They said yes,

    for

    they

    also wanted

    this

    business finished. So a f t e r the evening service we

    ta lked

    to a ll the people

    present

    and

    both sides agreed

    they

    wanted

    to

    f inish

    this t rouble

    and forget about i t -

    When we

    saw the policeman on

    Monday

    morning, he

    was glad

    to

    prepare

    the paper which

    he and

    the

    minister

    signed

    that

    the

    case

    had been

    settled. He

    told

    the

    men

    present

    this

    time

as he had told them before - church business does not

    belong

to the police or to the

    ourts

    -

Both Brother Qwemesha and myself were sorry

    this

problem had gone so far ,

    but

we are happy for the spir i t we found amongst them this time and really hope

    they

    will

    go ahead with the

    Lord s work

    now.

    I

    really appreciated

    Brother Qwemesha s wisdom in

    speaking to the people

    and pointin

    out errors they had made

    in

such a Christian way. Also the

    exceptionally

    good sermon he

    preached to

    a

    large

    crowd

    present

    on Sunday morning on

Vol. 17 No. 3 NEWS WITH THE NICHOLSONS March, 1976

    Dear Christian Friends:

    ^

    rh

    Our

    summer

    is supposed

    to

    be almost over, but

    we

    have been having the

    hottest

    weather of the year.

    However,

    we

are very thankful that i t comes at the end

    instead

    o f a t the

    beginning.

    The f i rst week

    in

    March

    the ministers

    met at Dimbaza near KingWilliamstown

    for

Minister s Week. Twenty-five African ministers attended and ten missionaries were

    present.

    The

    ministers took

    more

    than an hour each morning

    for

    their

    meeting. All

    that

    I

    talked with this

    time fel t

    they

had done more and gotten more from

    the

    meeting

this time than before because they had spent more time talking^.bout what they could do

to improve their work and less time on problems.

    The Annual

    Conference

    has been se t

    for

    Mtubatuba

    in

    Zululand

    for September

    15th

    through the

    19th.

    The theme for the

    meeting will be

    Jesus Christ .

    This last

    weekend

we set up the tent at

    Boboyi

    near Port Shepstone

    for

    Brother

    on. th e

    Old

Testament, There was one who came

    to give her

    l i fe

    to

    Christ. The

    people

    asked that

    the tent

    be

    brought back again

    and

    notice

    be given through

    out

    the area

    before

    hand

    that we

    would have

    pictures.

    They would

    like for

    services

    to

    begin

    on

Friday night so that they could have

    more services.

    Also present

    for the

    weekend

    was a schog] prinr. ipal.

    He

    has asked us to

    bring

    the

    tent

    and set

    i t

    up in the

    school grounds. He said

    there

    are so

    many

people in that area who do not know

    Christ.

    Two more men have

    arrived

    at school, so

    this brings

    the number

    of m-en

    to

    five

    and the number ofstudents.^ai=SdBSS33u.

    I t

    has been

    other

    men who are hoping to

    come

    to school.

    e kpew that two young

    women

    from Mashoko

    Mission

    in Rhodesia were

    coming

    to

    help Anne Stanley drive

    her

    new Peugeot pickup

    when

    she returned

    to work

    up

    there.

    e

    were

    pleasantly surprised

    when we

    learned

    that one of them was

    father

    is

    Howard Snow who

    ministers

    a t

    Elmo,

    Missouri.

    The

    Elmo

    church

    supports

    us

    so we have been

    guests

in the Snow home a number of

    times.

    Finally,

1 got the pickup cab home that I bought

    some

    time ago to take the

place of the very rusted one on our pickup now. e took i t all apart

    to transpor t

    i t

    here,

    so

    now we

    are busy welding

    rust

    proofing,

    tarring

    up and touching up be

fore we make the exchange. e

    shall

also change from left hand drive

    to

    right

    hand

    to make

Last night, returning to school with the students and the

    tent

    the highway

    patrol pulled me off

    the

    road for a check. But

    all

    lights, signals and brakes were

working so there was no problem 1 am

    used to this for

    they often

    think

    because

    of

    the

    canopy

    that is

    on the pickup

    that

    i t

    is

    a

    private taxi being

    used by an

    African

    man

    to

    haul passengers

    for

    hire.

    For

    my

    own

    safety

    and

    the

    sa fe ty of my

    passengers, 1 try to keep

    i t

    me to

    and f rom Dimbaza .

    Some

    1

do look longingly at a or Toyota bus, which would put all the passengers inside

    of one vehicle

    and

    give them a l l good seats to s i t upon.

    Dear Ch r i s t i a n

    F r i e nd s :

    Vernita is

away in the hospital. She came

    home

    for a

    few

    days but they had

changed her medicine and i t did not

    work

    out. So we hope shortly

    now

    they

    will

    have

    t h i s worked out and she wi l l soon be home.

    We want

    to

    thank you, who have

    been

    remembering her in your prayers.

from high school at the end of

    Three

    Dear

    Chr i s t i an Fr i ends

    The

    good

    news

    is

    that Vernita

    is

    home

    again

    and feel ing

    very well . We thank

    God

    f o r

    this

    The

    third week.-Of August

    Lynn

    Stanley

    went into

    the hospital

    h_e re_.in

    Port

    Shepstone

    and then

    went

    to

    a h osp ital in

    Durban where

    he

    under.-wentrSurgery .-

    He has

    been

    home since

the 4th of September and does not nlan to

    go back to

    teaching

    at the

    school

unt i l the twenty of September which

    wil l

    1 ;

    f te r Conference.

    With his being sick and

    away

    at hospital has also

    added to the work

    that

    I

    have

    to

    do. I have been

    going to

    school

    each

    da y

    to teact:

    :

    classes

    where I could and

    to

    see

    to the general running of

    th e sch oo l.

    On Tuesday

    morning

when I picked up the nurse for

    the clinic

    day at school we

were talking of problems in the work. She said

    often

    one

    does not

    dare

    t e l l

    people

    that

    they

    have

    TB

    or

    veneral

    disease for

    they

    will

    want

    to

    beat

    you up. They

    say

    their

    sickness

    has been

    caused by some one

    putting

    medicine

    in the

    way

    to cause

    them to

    get

    si k

    On Sunday Vernita

    and

    I

    went

to preach for the Indian church there. Brother Floyd

    Stamm

    is

    planning

    to return

    to South

    Africa

    this month

    ra ther than

    waiting unt i l December

    This

    l as t

    weekend we

    traveled

    down

    to

Queenstown. On Su nda y we spoke at Hinge

    and

    Izibeleni

    which are

    two new towns near

    Queenstown.

    The

    plans are

    to move a l l the

Africans who have been l iv ing in th e lo catio n at the edge of Queenstown to Ezibeleni

    and the

    coloured people will

    move

    into

    the area

    evacuated by

    the Africans.

    Monday we went to an

    area

    know

    as

    Middlekop

    because i t i s in

    the

    middle

    of three

    koppies or

    small

    h i l l s

    The

    church

    has bui l t a church

    building

    here. This

    building

    helps them

out in two ways for they are also using ic

    o r

    a

    school.

    On the way to

    Middlekop

    we

    passed by Glen

    Gary

    Falls .

    Th e

    50

    Mtuba tuba on

    th e

n or th c oa st

    We do

    not

    expect as many of

    our

    church

    people to

    come as

    have

    come

    to

    many of the meetings

    because i t

    is

ou t of the center of our chu rches and the cost of

    travel

    has greatly in

    creased. But many

    of

    the

    brethren

are happy we can go to

    th is area

    for most o f

    the

    churches

    of this

area are new and i t will be a big help to them to have

    the

    church meeting

    in their

    midst.

    Those

    around

    them can then

see that the meeting is just

    not

    the

    people

    o f t h a t a re a a lo ne

Since our return home we have

    been

    hurrying to get a l l

    things

    in

    order for

    con

    ference. There are

    many things

    to

    be

    done so that

    we

    shall

    be

    ready for that

    time.

    Some of those

    things

    consis t o f pain ting

    th e

    poles

    for

    the

    tent typing th e

    minutes of

meeting of the African ministers to be s tenciled set t ing

    up

    and typing

    on

    s tenci l the

program for the Conference. Then we are having translated a chart that was

    published

    in

the Ozark Bib le Col lege

    news

    so that w ill

    mean

    stenci ls for about three

    languages.

    In

    addition

    to

    th i s

    Vernita has to

    make

    curtains

    for the

    Kombi

    so

    that

    we may

sleep in it a t Conference.

    ;o

c he has to prepare a

    message

    as sh e i s

    one

    of the

    speakers for the

    Women s

    Meetings.

    I

    also

    am a

    speaker.

    Some

    of the food must also

    be

    bought for seven day

    of

    Conference.

    But

    in Pondoland you never

    have

alone. Lynn Stanley and I went down together

    with

    students

    from

School. The students has classes for the young people and Lynn and I for

    the

    There

was a s pe cia l b le ss in g fo r us here. Brother Bukula has

    been

    slow in taking

his young people to the Pondoland Youth

    Somet ime ago he

    did

    not feel it necessary

    f o r g i r l s to go

    t o

    the

    Training

    School.

    But

    having

    at tended Umzumbe

the past few months, he has now a great zeal for teaching his

    young people

    and in making

    use o f

    those who

    have

    The question most often asked

    is How

are things in South Africa ? There has

been almost no problem in our area. There were s t i l l some problems in Johannesburg

    when we l e f t b ut not l i k e those o f the

    months

    b e f o r e .

    There are s t i l l many

    changes

that must be made in th e land but

    i t is

important t h at changes have been made and

    more will be

made in th e future. Many hotels

    The
