Robert and Clara Schumann shared a truly romantic love story but thatwas only one aspect of their complex relationship. The many tragedies andburdens that Clara suffered are frequently overlooked: the last traumaticyears of Roberts life; the tremendous pressure to maintain a public career in

order to support her family and pay for the hospitalization of her mentally illhusband; the challenge of raising and educating seven children as a widow;the illnesses and deaths of four adult children. Throughout her life ClaraSchumann met each trial that confronted her with great courage.

Likewise of central importance in the Schumanns relationship was their mu-tual influence on and inspiration for each others music. Robert stated it most

clearly, referring to Clara as the very source of my music. It is often forgottenthat Clara enjoyed much greater renown during their lifetimes. When theywed in 1840 Robert was a relatively unknown composer while she was apianist already with an international reputation. (When Robert accompaniedClara on her concert tours it was not unusual for him to be asked: And areyou a musician, too?) Their marriage proved to be a rare partnership: they

studied scores jointly, read poetry for possible settings, shared their composi-tions for criticism and embarked on concert projects and tours together.

This CD reflects something of their unique and complex relationship from amusical point of view, uniting for the first time their two piano concertos aswell as Clara Schumanns Konzertsatz in one recording. Patricia Pagny is apassionate champion of Clara and Robert Schumanns music, performing their

works around the world, and is the choice artist for this distinct recording.

Under her fathers guidance Clara demonstrated prodigious talent as a child. She performed in the Leipzig Gewandhaus at the age of nine, made her offi-cial solo dbut there at eleven, and toured in Paris when she was twelve. Theyoung prodigy played for and was admired by musicians such as Paganini,Spohr, Chopin, Liszt and Mendelssohn. Clara likewise demonstrated great

aptitude as a composer. Throughout her early years she astonished audiencesas much with her musical compositions as by her playing.

The Piano Concerto Op. 7, which Clara began at the age of 13, is the mostoutstanding of her girlhood works. It is dramatic, innovative and quite mature,a document of her great virtuosity and creative musical thinking. Originallyconceived as a one-movement work, the original Concertsatz eventually

became the third movement of the concerto and was orchestrated by RobertSchumann! Clara already considered Robert, who had moved in with thefamily to study with her father in 1830, a close friend and experienced orches-trator. And it was most likely at Schumanns prodding that Clara wrote the firsttwo movements (which she also orchestrated herself) to complete the con-certo, performing the premiere with Mendelssohn conducting at the LeipzigGewandhaus in 1835. This remarkable composition displays the influences of

fashionable contemporary composers such as Kalkbrenner and Herz, but Claraalso offers many innovative ideas: there are no pauses between the move-ments, it does not employ any cadenzas in the classical tradition, nor does ithave the expected orchestral exposition before the entrance of the soloist.

Ten years after the publication of her early concerto, Clara Schumann began

to compose a second piano concerto. As was the case for many of hermature compositions, it was written for a specific family occasion: Robertsbirthday in 1847. The Konzertsatz was to remain a fragment, 175 measures ofa first movement with solo and tutti indications marked in the score. Thecomposer clearly planned an ambitious work as evidenced by the expansiveformal design and thematic material. Belgian pianist and musicologist Jozef deBeenhouwer completed and orchestrated the movement in 199093.

Robert Schumanns Piano Concerto, likewise in A minor, enjoys much greaterrenown and is in the repertoire of nearly every pianist. The first movement, composed in 1841, was originally conceived as an independent fantasia forpiano and orchestra. Schumann gradually realized, however, that this wouldbe more appropriate as the opening movement of a large-scale work and thuscomposed the slow movement and the finale in 1845. The work was pre-

miered in Dresden on 4 December 1845 with his beloved Clara performingas the soloist.
