Novi Sad

“Reci me nešto o ovom gradu” entstand mit Unterstützung von MaTerra Mesto (Ser-bien) und der Platt-form für DaNeben der Kunsthochschule Halle Burg Giebichenstein (Deutschland) im Rah-men von “Artist in Re-sidence” in Novi Sad. Meine Spaziergänge fanden vom 16. Feb-ruar bis zum 01. März statt, die DIY-Buch-produktion erfolgte in MaTerra Mesto im März 2014.

Projekat „Reci mi nešto o ovom gra-du“ realizovan je uz podršku Materra Mes-ta (Srbija) i Platt-form fur DaNeben by Academy of Fine Arts Halle Burg Giebichens-tein (Nemac ka), tokom trajanja umetnic kog rezidencijalnog pro-grama u Novom Sadu. Moje šetnje kroz grad trajale su u perio-du od 16. februara do 1. marta, a knjige su principom samizdat objavljene u Matrerra Mestu marta 2014.

Die schönste Stadt der Welt ... wenigstens für mich. Bin gebür-tige Novisaderin und bin stolz darauf.

Tolle Stadt. Fürs Leben. Ich lebe hier seit 1999 in Gogolstraße. Ich gehe mit Hunden (dog) zwei mal täglich spazieren.

Perfect city for living. I live here since 1990 in Gogol‘s street. I walk my dogs two times a day.

Ich liebe so sehr meine Stadt, mein Novi Sad. Grbavica ist ein Stadtteil in dem ich wohne und die meiste Zeit verbringe. Der Stadtteil Grbavica hat den Namen nach der Bauart und nach Gebäu-den in Grbavica in Sarajevo be-kommen.

I work at the Liman Market as a trader every day except Monday. The market is the best and most interesting work place if you are able to acknowledge that. Lots of new acquaintances and loads of communication.

1. Auf dem Liman-Markt arbeite ich als Verkäufer am Tresen, je-den Tag außer Montag. Der Markt ist der beste und interesantes-te Arbeitsort, wenn man in der Lage ist, das zu akzeptieren. Vie-le neue Bekanntschaften und viel Kommunikation.

Dies ist ein Ort, zu dem ich oft komme. Es ist ein Ort der Guther-zigkeit und der Schönheit. Gu-ter Menschen und leckeren und guten Essens. Vitaminenbund und Genuss. Hier verbringe ich so-viel Zeit, soviel mich Verkäu-ferinnen und Verkäufer aufhal-ten, während ich das für mich Nötige aussuche. Ich bin hier, um mich mit Obst und Gemüse zu versorgen.

Es gibt gute und schlechte Mens-chen, aber es ist schwer ein Mesch zu sein. Ich war sehr jung, als ich in dieser Stadt ankam. Meine Geburtsstadt heißt Kula, liegt hinter Vrbas. Ich arbeitete in einer Fabrik, ich war nicht volljährig.Dieser Ort ist ein Markt. Ich habe auf einem anderen gearbei-tet. Ich kann an jedem beliebigen Platz arbeiten. Dieser Markt ist schön eingerichtet. Als ich jung war, war hier ein Bahnhof. Hier lernten sich Mädchen mit Jungen kennen, die Freundinnen kamen und warteten auf den Zug.Ich verbringe sehr oft meine Zeit hier. Sie passen auf, dass ich ni-cht weggehe, besonders wenn ich aus dem Krankenhaus zurück bin.Ich schleppe jedem mit, was er braucht. Der eine sagt mach das, der andere mach dieses, bring Möhren mit, bring das Gemüse ins Lagerhaus – dann geben sie mit etwas Ware oder ein paar Dinar.Ich bin 71, ich zeichne nichts, ich kann nur sprechen.

Rajna Maksimovic There is good and bad people, but it is hard to be a human. When I was young I came to this city. The name of my place is Kula, it is behind Vrbas. I was working in a factory, I wasn’t of full age.This place is a market. I used to work at another one. I can work at any place. This market is nicely equipped. When I was young, there was a train station at this place. Here the girls got to know the boys, girlfriends came here to wait for the train.I spend a lot of time here. They take take care that I won’t leave this place, especially when I’m back from the hospital. For everybody I carry the things he needs. One says, do this, the other one, do that, bring carrots, bring the vegetables to the depository house – then they give some goods or some Dinars. I am 71, I don’t draw anything, I only can speak.

1 Der Liman-Markt ist ein zeit-genössiches Objekt, wo Obst und Gemüse verkauft wird, sowie ande-re Ware. Hier ist immer lebendig und interessant. Es befindet sich in Grbavica, einem Stadtteil von Novi Sad. Ja, ich arbeite jeden Tag und ver-bringe hier täglich mehr als 12 Stunden. Es ist sehr interessant.Ihr seid wunderbare Mädchen. I sell popcorn in the city centre. It’s a great location for my stand, however there is a lot of work to be done I am an employee here, I work for my bosses. The wages are okay, but it would be awesome if I were registered! I spend a great amount of time here. My shift is about 9 or 10 hours long, depending on the weather … Usually I spend my time making popcorn and, when there isn’t much work, I read something for my university exams or a book to satisfy my soul I’m not very ar-tistic, but I’ll do my very best!

Ich verkaufe Popcorn im Stadtzen-trum. Der Standort ist gut, aber es gibt seeeehr viel Arbeit. Hier arbeite ich als Verkäuferin, der Raum ist privat, so arbeite ich für meine Chefs. Der Lohn ist ok, es wäre jedoch super, wenn ich an-gemeldet wäre. Ich verbringe hier die meiste Zeit am Tag, arbeite um die 9 oder 10 Stunden, vom Wetter abhängend. Meistens mache ich Popkorn, und wenn es keine Arbeit gibt, dann lese ich Literatur, etwas für die Uni oder für meine Seele. Ich bin keine künstlerische Seele, aber ich gebe mein Bestes.

Novi Sad is not my home town, but I find it lovely. The only bad thing about it is the Vojvodina Football Team. The Fortress is awesome.I work here. It’s a constant ba-ttle.

Newlyweds Square … I love this place be-cause it provides me with rest and tran-quility, especially when my child is at a workshop at the American Corner. During that period I spend my time sitting here on the benches and read … or I observe the passers-by … or I simply rest. It is really possible to do it here. This place makes me feel like a part of this city and thus connects me with it. This is inter-esting; even though I got married across the street from here, I don’t think about that when I’m here, but when I was younger and still single, this place specifically reminded me of the notion of marriage … That’s all I’ve got.

Der Platz der Jungvermählten ... Ich mag diesen Ort, weil ich mich hier entspannen kann, besonders wenn mein Kind beim Workshop im American Corner ist. Dann sitze ich hier an der Bank und lese am liebsten ... oder ich be-trachte Passanten ... oder ich ruhe meine Seele aus. Hier ist das wirklich möglich. Dieser Ort gibt mir das Ge-fühl, dass ich zur Stadt gehöre und das verbindet mich in eine einzigar-tige Einheit mit ihr. Es ist interes-sant, obwohl ich hier gegenüber ge-heiratet habe, denke ich nie daran wenn ich hier sitze. Und früher, vor der Hochzeit, habe ich diesen Platz ausschließlich damit verbunden. Ja, so viel zu diesem Ort.

I haven’t seen a worse dump than Novi Sad in my entire life, Sibe-ria is New York compared to this, to hell with Đorđe Balaševic..This is the most beautiful city in Serbia, it has bicycle tracks … which most people however don’t use … this is not the town we were born in and where we grew up … but we’re still here … We are hoping for a change to something better.

This place is very odd. You can come here and have a cup of co-ffee in the afternoon and hear about a certain comic-book ar-tist who created a new super-hero or you can come here and choke on cigarette smoke while custo-mers from the neighborhood are playing darts. Or, on the other hand, you can have a talk with Boban why there is no electricity in the neighborhood while you are waiting for a cosmetic treatment. These are the three times I’ve been here and that’s about it ć By the way, I’m not familiar with what usually happens here but the music they play is cool ć and the beer is great ć And my friend is constantly hitting this notebook while I’m writing in it … And I like the fact that they serve dark beer here.I’m not very good at drawing, so I’ll rather write something … I’ve seen a chick here whom I think doesn’t exist, a character from a television series I watch, she has huge eyebrows and she’s ec-centric. And I feel very grate-ful for meeting someone whom I perceived to be a character from a television series or a film. And I can’t believe she exists. She even winked at me ;) And she said I have beautiful eyes …

Dieser Ort ist sehr merkwürdig. Man kann hier am Nachmittag auf einen Kaffee vorbeikommen und da-von hören, wie ein Comiczeichner einen neuen Superhelden erfunden hat. Oder man kann kommen und vom Zigarettenrauch ersticken, während die Nachbarn Dart spie-len. Oder während man auf eine kosmetische Behandlung wartet, kann man sich mit Boban über den Stomausfall im Kiez unterhalten. Das sind Geschichten von den drei Malen, als ich hier in Graffiti war und das ist alles. :)Eigentlich weiß ich nicht was hier abgeht, aber die Musik ist cool. :) und das Bier ist cool :) Und mein Freund ärgert mich, während ich das schreibe ... Und ich mag, dass es hier Schwarzbier vom Fass gibt.Ich bin keine gute Zeichnerin, so werde ich schreiben ... Ich sah hier eine Person, von der ich denke, dass es sie nicht gibt und dass sie aus einer Serie ist, die ich mag. Sie hat große Augen-brauen und ist exzentrisch. Und es freut mich so sehr, dass ich jemanden kennegelernt habe, der mich an eine Person aus einer Serie oder einem Film erinnert. Ich kann es nicht glauben, dass es sie gibt. Sie hat mir sogar gezwinkert! ;) Und mir gesagt, dass ich schöne Augen habe ...

Diese Stadt durchstreife ich oft. Alles hier gefällt mir. Die Stadt ist sehr schön und voller un-terschiedlicher Farben. In dieser Stadt lerne, spiele und lebe ich. In der Stadt verbringe ich viel Zeit.

Limani was built in 70s, on place were once was a swamp, that`s how they got the name.Telep is older part of the town, with houses, and population is mainly Hungarian origin.This quay is also called ``dol-ma . In past, beach and water on Štrand was cleaner, so you could swim in it, now people are polluting...Otherwise, here we are stro-ling, jogging, driwing bicycle and rollers.Novi Sad is pleasent town! Just as town should be!

Die Limani (=Name der Wohnblock-Überbauungen in Novi Sad) wurden in den 70er-Jahren des 20. Jahr-hunderts in einem Sumpfgebiet erbaut, darum heissen sie so.Telep ist der ältere Teil der Stadt, mit Häusern und einer vorwiegend ungarisch-stämmigen Bevölkerung.Diesen Kej (Uferpromenade) nen-nen wir „Galma“ (?). Früher waren Strand und Wasser am Štrand sau-berer, sodass man darin schwim-men konnte, jetzt verschmutzen die Leute ihn...Ansonsten bummeln wir hier, joggen, fahren Rad und fahren Rollerblades.

Novi Sad ist eine Stadt nach Maß (mit der richtigen Größe?)! Gen-au wie sie sein muss!

The name of this place is Šodroš, and I found out about that just recently, although I‘ve lived in Novi Sad all my life. This is my favorite spot. I come here to re-lax, to read a book, to write, to take photos... or I ride bicycle with someone who I like, then we sit here and talk...or just sit in silence.

Der Name dieses Orts ist Šodroš. Das habe ich erst kürzlich er-fahren, obwohl ich seit jeher in Novi Sad lebe. Dies ist mein Lieblingsort. Hierher komme ich, um mich zu entspannen, ein Buch zu lesen, zu schreiben, zu foto-grafieren... oder um mit jeman-dem, der mir lieb ist, Fahrrad zu fahren. Dann sitzen wir hier und unterhalten uns... oder wir schweigen nur.

Novi Sad is a very beautiful, peaceful family town. The kids love it. We often visit the park near preschool, because there are stairs that move and my daughter calls them ‘‘mrdave‘‘

Novi Sad ist sehr schön, ruhig und familienfreundlich. Die Kin-der lieben die Stadt.Wir besuchen oft den Park ne-ben dem Kindergarten, weil es dort „bewegliche Treppen“ gibt und meine Tochter nennt sie „die Beweglichen“.

Telep as such is the most beauti-ful part of Novi Sad. Very peace-ful and cozy for life. The postman works here every day.

Sehr ruhig und (?), entspannt ist das Leben in diesem Teil der Stadt. Jeden Tag geht der Postbote auf diesem Gebiet seiner Arbeit nach.

This place is very beautiful, es-pecially peaceful, nice for chil-dren. We often spend time here, especially with children at Li-manski park. We play and walk, en-joy the delights of the park and Novi Sad.

Novi Sad is a beautiful city, and Telep is a settlement where I work. It`s quite a calm place and the people are nice. I can say only this much, because I haven’t been here for too long. I live on quay besides Danube and that`s the most beautiful place to live. I adore quay!

Dieser Ort ist sehr schön, außer-gewöhnlich ruhig und perfekt für Kinder. Hier verbringen wir oft Zeit, besonders mit unseren Kin-dern im Limanski Park. Wir spie-len, spazieren und genießen die magische Schönheit des Parks und Novi Sads.

Novi Sad ist eine sehr schöne Stadt und Telep der Stadtteil wo ich arbeite. Hier ist es sehr ru-hig und die Menschen sind nett. Das kann ich nur sagen, weil ich seit Kurzem hier bin. Ich wohne am Kai neben der Donau und dass ist der schönste Ort zum Wohnen.Ich liebe den Kai!

I love Novi Sad. I love this play-ground most, but they don`t main-tain it properly, but the space is wonderful.

I work here on weekends, sell se-condhand clothes for a hundred dinars and shoes for two hundred dinars, but the bussines is not going very well. I hope some bet-ter times are coming, when we can buy new stuff and when we won’t have to do this anymore.

It’s given me the most beautiful moments and the dea-rest people, although some of them don’t live here anymore ... they also don‘t live anywhere else... It’s given me love and sadness, but still I can feel its depth... It’s sad because it’s not as it used to be, it‘s sad that the only things which I recognize from my town are the streets and parks... It doesn’t give me comfort and feeling of safety any-more... Now I’m alone and the streets of this town are becoming uglier as the time passes... but all of that is Novi Sad...Nemanja

Novi Sad...Die Tiefe der breiten Straßen, Haus-ruhe von 2 bis 5, voller Erinnerun-gen und Familien... Die Stadt hat mir die schönsten Augenblicke und liebs-ten Menschen gegeben von denen manche keine Einwohner der Stadt mehr sind...und nirgends mehr leben...Sie hat mir auch Liebe und Trauri-gkeit gegeben, aber ich fühle noch ihre Tiefe...Es ist traurig, dass sie nicht mehr so ist, wie sie war. An diesem Ort geschieht im Moment die schönste Sache seit Juni 2013. Heute stellen fünf bezaubernde, großartige Wesen ihre zweiwöchige Arbeit vor. Weibliche Energie – das ist Materra. Hier verbringe ich, außer der Zeit, die ich zu-hause verbringe, die meiste Zeit.Materra, gebe Durstigen zu Trinken, mache Yoga, tanze, disku-tiere, trinke Kaffee, wasche Glä-ser ab, putze die Toilette, bringe Blumen, lese, surfe im Internet, verbinde, stricke, lache, ver-bringe Zeit mit Freundinnen, hal-te Sitzungen, schreibe, schließe die Tür auf und zu.

At this place currently the most beautiful thing since june 2013 is happening. Today five wonderful great Human Beings are presenting theyr work of two weeks. Female Energy - that’s MaTerra. Here I spend most of my time, apart of what I spend at home. I give to drink to the thirsty, make Yoga, Dance, discuss, drink coffee, Clean glasses, clean the toilet, bring flowers, read, surf in in-ternet, connect, knitt, laugh, spend time with friends, make meetings, write, open and close the door with key.

Ich würde gern schweigen und mich selbst fühlen, nachdenken über mich, bestimmte Zeit.

I would like to hush and feel myself, think about me, for some time.

Novi Sad, the city of invisible women who dream.

Novi Sad used to be the city that loves people. Now, it’s a city loved by only few people. Or, people have always loved Novi Sad made from Novi Sad what it once was. But, those things are none of my business.

But, what does concern me in this city?

Only the scent of a legend about women’s sky. Also, a cloud where women rest their dreams. As for the dreams, there is her quarrelsome wild-ness; she manages to escape even when I dream of her. She exists in this invisible way, really. And you think of her, instantly, as if she had existed, once. No one truly understands what is said when they mention her. She forgets you, herself, so you could forget her… And in her wild manner, she disappears in the space bet-ween clouds and dreams… You tell me whether you understand why this city has that very sky, on which there is that could of hers, intertwined with the dreams of the women who are intertwined with this city. Yeah, it’s unclear why the city is even here, right beside her.

Novi Sad, die Stadt der träumenden, unsichtba-ren Frauen.

Novi Sad war einmal die Stadt, die Menschen lie-bt. Jetzt ist es eine Stadt, die nur vo wenigen geliebt wird. Oder, die Menschen haben immer das Novi Sad geliebt, was aus jenem vergangenen Novi Sad gemacht war. Das ist alles, was mich nicht angeht.

Und was geht mich eigentlich in dieser Stadt an?

Nur der Duft der Legende vom Frauenhimmel geht mich etwas an. Am Himmel geht mich auch die Wo-lke, an der Frauen ihre Träume ausruhen, etwas an. Von Frauentäumen geht mich auch ihr jähzor-niger Rasen an, dass sie wegflieht, auch sogar wenn ich von ihr träume. Sie existiert eigent-lich nur so unsichtbar. Und man erinnert sich gleich an sie, als ob sie einaml war. Und nie-mandem ist klar, was über sie gesprochen wird, wenn man sie erwähnt. Sie vergisst dich selbst, damit sie sie vergessen könnte ...Und so rasend verschwindet sie im Raum zwischen den Wolken und den Träumen. Jetzt überleg´ mal, ob dir überhaupt klar ist (wenn sie wegflieht), wieso diese Stadt gerade den Himmel hat, wo sie gerade die Wolke hat, die die Frauentäume angeht und Frauen, die diese Stadt angehen. Ja, es ist unklar, was diese Stadt überhaupt hier neben ihr macht.

I think it’s very dificult to talk about a hometown, because besides the fact that we simply love it, we also simply hate it and always want to escape from it.For me this town is important because of people and because of books. And every time I leave, those are the things that make me come back. I can‘t say that I love it because of Danube and smells or because it is built in a way that suits people, cuz nothing of that is like that anymore. I often feel there as some kind of inside emigrant and I blame this town for everything .I think it’s very hard to talk about a hometown, we are cruel to it , like we are to our loved ones. I like that people there(here) ride bicycles and despite the poverty in which they live, they didn’t lose their spirit, they laugh and fight, cross trough red light, pretending that they are still alive.

Ich denke es ist schwierig, über seine eigene Geburtsstadt zu schreiben, weil außer dass wir sie auf natürliche Weise von Natur aus lieben, hassen wir sie zugleich und haben ständig das Bedürfnis, aus ihr zu flüchten. Mir ist diese Stadt wichtig wegen ihrer Mens-chen und wegen der Bücher. Und immer wenn ich weggehe, komme ich ihretwegen wieder zurück. Ich kann nicht sagen, dass ich die Stadt der Donau oder der Gerüche wegen liebe oder auf menschlicher Ebe-ne, denn nichts von dem ist mehr so wie es einmal war. Ich fühle mich hier oft wie irgendein „inne-rer“ Emigrant und dafür beschul-dige ich diese Stadt. Ich finde es schwer, über die Geburtsstadt zu sprechen, denn gegenüber ihr sind wir unbarmherzig wie gegenüber den nächsten Freunden. Ich mag es, dass die Leute hier Fahrrad fahren und dass sie trotz der Um-stände, in denen sie leben, nicht die Lebenslust verlieren. Sie la-chen und streiten sich, gehen bei Rot über die Straße, tun so als ob sie noch leben.

Ich bin nicht aus Novi Sad und auch nicht aus Serbien.Ich komme aus Berlin, aber ich bin nicht ganz Deutsch, ich bin auch halb italienisch, aber ich identifiziere mich nicht volls-tändig mit dem einen oder ande-ren.Ich bin ein Kind dieses Planeten. Ich mag es hier zu leben, dies ist die schönste südliche Stadt, die ich kenne. Ich spaziere gern an der Donau oder umarme mein süßes Mädchen, oder gebe Yoga hier im Materra. Dieser Ort ist wirklich sehr schön, er ist voller Leben und ich unterrichte gern Yoga hier. Für mich sind dieser Ort, diese Stadt und dieses Land sehr interessant, es existiert ein großes Potential und ich mag wie die Leute glücklich und unglüc-klich sind, wie die Stadt gleich-zeitig so arm und so „reich“ ist.

I am not from Novi Sad, neither from Serbia. I am from Berlin, but I’m not totally german, I’m half italien, too. But I don’t identify myself completely with one or the other thing. I’m a child of this planet. I like to live here, it’s the most beautiful southern city I’ve ever known. I like to walk belong Danube River or to embrace my sweet girl, or teach Yoga here at MATerra. This place is really nice, it’s full of life and I enjoy teaching Yoga here. For me, this place, this town, and this country are really interesting, there is a huge potential and I like how people are happy and unhappy, how the town is at the same time that poor and that “rich”.

Novi Sad

“Reci me nešto o ovom gradu” entstand mit Unterstützung von MaTerra Mesto (Ser-bien) und der Platt-form für DaNeben der Kunsthochschule Halle Burg Giebichenstein (Deutschland) im Rah-men von “Artist in Re-sidence” in Novi Sad. Meine Spaziergänge fanden vom 16. Feb-ruar bis zum 01. März statt, die DIY-Buch-produktion erfolgte in MaTerra Mesto im März 2014.

Projekat „Reci mi nešto o ovom gra-du“ realizovan je uz podršku Materra Mes-ta (Srbija) i Platt-form fur DaNeben by Academy of Fine Arts Halle Burg Giebichens-tein (Nemac ka), tokom trajanja umetnic kog rezidencijalnog pro-grama u Novom Sadu. Moje šetnje kroz grad trajale su u perio-du od 16. februara do 1. marta, a knjige su principom samizdat objavljene u Matrerra Mestu marta 2014.

“Reci me nešto o ovom gradu” was reali-zed with support of MaTerra Mesto (Ser-bia) and Plattform für DaNeben by Academy of Fine Arts Halle Burg Giebichenstein (Ger-many) While an Artist in residence Program in novi Sad. My Walks trough the city took place between 16th of February and 01st of March, the books were DIY produced at Ma-Terra Mesto in March 2014.
