Locarno68 has just opened its doors and as the im-ages that have accompanied this year of visions pass through my head, I ask myself which ones will remain impressed in the minds of the audience. As we wait to find out, I’d like to offer three types of close up, as a kind of aperitif.

1. How to start with anything other than the fresh face of Edward Norton? His presence at Locarno will surely be one for the memory album. What we like about Norton is that he is a star in spite of himself, that he is able to embody the ambiguity of this 21st century, not so much to shock the public but to encourage reflec-tion on who we are and where we are going. How not to welcome someone who claims that “the best movies – documentary or fiction – provoke questions”?

2. The black-and-white close-ups that compose El Movimiento are incisive and iconoclastic in true Peckinpah style. After introducing us to his History of Fear, a revelation in competition at Berlin last year, Benjamín Naishtat has made a “wild” film, and has found in the Argentinian pampas something similar to the Mexican desert of which the American director was so fond.

3. The international competition opens with power-ful emotions. Brat Dejan (Brother Dejan) and James White are two films stitched onto the skin of their leading characters. The first is like a basso continuo, a wave of withheld energy that vibrates in the enig-matic face of a general in hiding. The second is a work of pure kinetic energy. Stylistically, Josh Mond never tears the gaze away from his young protagonist, and clearly welcomes the challenge of making a film as though it were a close-up in constant movement.

È una chitarra d’autore a dare la prima scintilla rock di #Locarno68. Ed è facile anche capire cosa abbia stuzzicato Jonathan Demme nell’accettare la direzione di Ricki and the Flash. La sceneggiatura originale scritta da Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) aveva tutti gli elementi che Demme ama sia come regista che come artista. Il film è infatti un dramma familiare, una commedia, un cammino di redenzione ed è pure una lunga strisciata di grandi pezzi rock. E se c’è una cosa che Demme ama sopra ogni altra è la musica nei film o i film che la musica la raccontano. Suo il documentario su Neil Young e suo il film-concerto dei Talking Heads Stop Making Sense. Ecco, in un certo senso Ricki and the Flash è un

altro film-concerto, questa volta suona-to da Meryl Streep. È lei a cantare e suo-nare la chitarra – per davvero – mentre cerca di elaborare il senso di colpa per aver abbandonato la famiglia, quando aveva deciso di in-seguire il suo sogno rock and roll. Tutto questo ne fa una cattiva madre? In una scena topica del

film Ricki, il personaggio interpretato da Meryl Streep, si lamenta di quanto sia ingiusta la nostra società: “i papà possono fare quello che vogliono”, dice, e nes-suno probabilmente rinfaccerebbe mai a Mick Jagger di essere un pessimo padre. Tanto più che qui, ad aggiungere un intrigante substrato al dramma familiare, sta il fatto che a interpretare il ruolo della figlia sia Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife), figlia di Meryl Streep anche nella vita reale.

Insomma, Ricki and the Flash è apparso subito a Demme come la sceneggia-tura giusta per formare la sua band con Meryl Streep alla voce, la rock star anni Ottanta Rick Springfield alla chitarra e una coppia di vecchi amici per completa-re il gruppo: Rick Rosas, già bassista di Neil Young e Bernie Worrell, tastierista che già era apparso in Stop Making Sense. Un abbraccio tra musica e immagini per dar corpo visivo alle canzoni preferite di Demme, come ad esempio American Girl di Tom Petty, che i suoi fan immediatamente ricorderanno di aver sentito in uno dei suoi più bei film: Il silenzio degli innocenti.

Five questions to Edward Norton – Excellence Award Moët & Chandon

In your career you’ve been: a poker player, a magician, a thief, a green monster, an inspector in an Eastern Europe hotel. And you’ve always demonstrated your extraordinary performing skills. That’s why you’re going to receive the Excellence Award Moët & Chandon. What do you know about the Festival del film Locarno?

Well, it’s almost 70 years now that filmmakers have brought great films to this festival. Roma città aperta was presented at the first year of the Festival and that’s a favorite of mine. So many great filmmakers have been celebrated here and I’m honored to be a small part of that tradition.

Your first role came in 1996 (Primal Fear). In six years you took part to some of the most memorable and iconic movies of that period – American History X, Fight Club, 25th Hour. Which movie of those years (or even later) do you remember with more affection and why?

Every film you make has different challenges and different pleasures. Sometimes the actual making of a film is very fun and satisfying while you are doing it… sometimes the process of making it is hard or feels very uncertain but the result is very satisfying. I’ve been really lucky to work on a lot of films that I felt very passionate about and very chal-lenged by, creatively. And I’ve worked with wonderful directors and ac-tors. I’ve been very, very fortunate and, honestly, I remember almost all of it with great affection. Sometimes, very rarely, you have a sensation right

in the middle of making a film that something very unique and original is happening. I had that sensation making Fight Club and 25th Hour… I had it again recently making Birdman. That’s not to say that I knew the films were going to work…more that I had the sensation that what we were engaged in was very bold and strange and was tapping into a deep vein of the Zeitgeist.

In Birdman you’re playing the role of an actor obsessed with looking for life into the world of fiction. How much does the Edward Norton-actor have in common with this character?

Ha! Not very much. I like Shiner’s commitment to “the pursuit of truth in art” and to his craft but I don’t suffer as much as he does! I actually al-most never relate personally to characters I play. I generally look to leave myself as far behind as I can.

As an actor you have to be tuned in with your colleagues on the set. Along your career you have worked with great actors, such as Richard Gere, Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, Marlon Brando, Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Naomi Watts, Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron. What’s the experience (or the set) you remember with more pleasure?

I’ve been very privileged to work with terrific actors who were also terrific people and real professionals. I always feel a strong camaraderie

with other actors. I’ve even chosen to do certain movies just to work with the other actors involved. I did The Score just to work with De Niro and Brando. I did Stone just to work with Bob again. I did Red Dragon to get to work with Tony Hopkins... and Ralph Fiennes and Phil ( Seymour Hoffman, ndr) and Harvey (Keitel, ndr) etc… The last two films I did with Wes and with Alejandro were some of the best ensemble acting experiences I’ve ever had. Both of those films were like being part of a wonderful theater company.

You’ve also been screenwriter, producer and director. What can you say about those experiences? Did your job as actor change after them? Could you tell us something about Motherless Brooklyn, the movie you’re directing 15 years after Keeping the Faith?

You certainly learn more about how to help a director once you’ve directed! After I directed a movie I made a point to stop being late… ever. And to stay on set as much as possible. Directors really need actors to trust them and so over the years I’ve really become more and more disciplined about only choosing to work with directors whose work I really admire and whom I trust to such a degree that I’m happy to explore wherever they want to go. There’s not much to say about Motherless Brooklyn yet. It would jinx it! Maybe I’ll get to bring it to Locarno. That would be fun.

Sam Peckinpah: Getaway!

Sam il selvaggio. Troppo facile chiamarlo così, giocando sul titolo del suo film cult, quello che ha permesso di trovare una nuo-va figura retorica anche ai telecronisti spor-tivi (dal calcio al rugby, “mucchio selvag-gio” ormai è ovunque). Peckinpah è stato, in verità, uno dei poeti più brutali dell’arte mondiale. Con lui non si può parlare solo di cinema, il cineasta di Fresno è maestro, filosofo, rivoluzionario, è uno che ha sa-puto percorrere l’esistenza con genialità e sregolatezza. Conoscerlo vuol dire capirlo e, soprattutto, comprendere dove viviamo. Peckinpah è forse stato il primo regista americano di genere a dirottare ogni strada che sappia di propaganda, per cercare nella contraddizione, nell’ambiguità, nel dolore, anche fisico, una verità senza catarsi. Re-gista della violenza: l’etichetta frettolosa

sperde tutta la complessità poetica che la durezza dei suoi gesti era capace di ema-nare. Con quella faccia da cowboy, con quel suo carattere anarchico e quelle immagini contro, ha pensato bene di scardinarlo il no-stro mondo. Dietro alle scene scabrose, era solo e sempre celata la lotta contro l’abuso che lui rappresentava nella sua cruda real-tà. Dietro il caos c’era l’eversione salvifica di un uomo che ha costantemente rifiuta-to schemi e stereotipi: non a caso lasciò il western, dopo cinque lavori che ribaltavano tutte le regole di questo genere (in parte in una strada parallela a Sergio Leone, con cui condivideva l’approccio a storie e uomini, ma non l’estetica e neanche i ritmi), non a caso ha girato pure Junior Bonner (L'ulti-mo buscadero), che della violenza non ha neanche un lontano profumo. Peckinpah

viene stranamente dimenticato quando ci sono da stilare pantheon e classifiche po-polari, eppure The Wild Bunch (Il mucchio selvaggio) e Straw Dogs (Cani di paglia, assieme a quel Bring Me the Head of Al-fredo Garcia – Voglio la testa di Garcia che lui stesso considerava il suo capolavoro) non puoi dimenticare più dopo averli visti. Sono film dal tempo lungo, sei costretto a pensarli, a ripensarci e a farci i conti. Il pri-mo è uno spartiacque: nessuno dei cineasti più talentuosi cresciuti con quel film del 1969, tra ralenti e piogge di sangue, potrà dire di non esserne stato condizionato. Si chiamino Quentin o Kathryn o Martin, poco importa. Il secondo è forse il suo lavoro più potente, lacerante, un’analisi impietosa delle istituzioni fondanti della nostra socie-tà, dalla convivenza civile al matrimonio.

Con un doppio stupro difficilissimo anche solo da descrivere. E fa tremare i polsi il pensiero che Arancia meccanica di Stanley Kubrick sia figlio di quegli stessi mesi del 1971, un opera a suo modo gemella e com-plementare.

Nessuno ha saputo raccontare la scon-fitta e i perdenti come wild Sam, forse per-ché conosceva benissimo entrambi: chi ha lavorato con lui giura che i suoi progetti migliori non sono mai stati girati, scivolati nel cassetto dei lavori falliti. E Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid (Pat Garrett e Billy Kid) fu un flop al botteghino perché gli tolsero il director’s cut, che post mortem si provò a restituirgli (la versione più lunga di venti minuti che in Piazza Grande è stata mostra-ta qualche giorno fa nella prima serata del Prefestival). La retrospettiva pardata ci por-

ta anche nelle sue incursioni televisive, va al di là dei 4 anni fatidici tra il 1969 e il 1973 e comprende i suoi inizi folgoranti e quella fine erroneamente definita declino da chi non ha saputo capirlo. Gli stessi che magari ne parlano come di un autore barocco per le scene al rallentatore e non si rendevano conto di quanto fosse essenziale. Da chi ne denunciava l’audacia visionaria e non si rendeva conto di quanto fosse concreto: lo sanno i suoi attori, da Hoffman a Coburn, passando per Steve McQueen, maltrattati e resi grandi dallo stesso Peckinpah. Sarebbe bello, ora, poter dire «provaci ancora Sam». Lo fa per lui un cinema che spesso lo imita, ma non sa neanche emularlo.

One of the first rules you learn at film school is that zooming in gives a scene greater intensity. The caveat is that overly tight compositions hinder the normal progress of a narrative, in which emotional peaks are supposed to alternate with linking scenes. With his de-but film, Josh Mond has decided to do away with this hoary but generally effective rule of cinematic gram-mar. He focuses his camera close on his leading man (an extraordinary Christopher Abbott) and never lets go. He uses editing less to connect scenes, more to draw breath between two long dives into the inner life of James White. The result is a film as off-balance, nervy and exuberant as its main character. A film that sticks to the skin of a young man, pursuing him incessantly and rendering us participants in the painful process of his return home to care for his sick mother.

We should say right away that watching James White is like living through an experience. Something that leaves a mark on the skin. The film is like a closely fought battle between the viewer’s gaze and the body on the screen. Its nerve centre is a moving scene, as long as a sleepless night, a scene made up of states of mind rather than actions: fear, inadequacy, courage, tiredness, euphoria, exhaustion. A scene that wants to extend the feelings of the character to the viewer. It is here that the image of physical conflict – on which the film had constructed its whole first part – dissolves into that of a tender embrace, which is probably the best way to describe the mother-son relationship.

Sia il conflitto che il processo di pacifica-zione in ex-Jugoslavia sono stati racconta-ti in numerosi film, soprattutto dal punto di vista dei civili, prime vittime in tutti gli aspetti dei tanti fronti che avevano diviso i Balcani. Bakur Bakuradze, già a Locarno nel 2011 come giurato della sezione Pardi di domani, e allievo di Marlen Khutsiev, che il Festival premia in questa edizione con un Pardo alla carriera, sceglie un rischioso sca-valcamento di campo mettendo al centro di Brat Dejan (Brother Dejan) un colpevole dei massacri: criminale di guerra per i ne-

mici e la giustizia internazionale, eroe per ex-miliziani, irriducibili nazionalisti e no-stalgici. Scomparire è l’unico destino che gli è rimasto, invece diventa protagonista fin dal titolo, come se solo il cinema potes-se ancora dar corpo ai fantasmi. Nel mondo del generale la guerra non è finita, non si torna a vivere e a ricostruire sulle macerie, ed è questa la prima condanna: non anco-ra prigioniero della Corte dell’Aja, lo è del buio in cui si nasconde e soprattutto del re-cente passato. Fuori il mondo sembra stia cambiando in fretta, la società ha scelto di

guardare al futuro, i commilitoni di stringe-re nuove alleanze, la politica di cogliere ine-dite opportunità. Mentre proprio grazie alla scomoda scelta di Bakuradze di guardare a tutto questo dal punto di vista del suo oscu-ro protagonista, Brat Dejan diventa capace di mostrare che l’orrore non finisce, che la paura non si dimentica, che entrambi per-vadono lo spazio del film come quello del set, tanto le inquadrature quanto il fuori campo, il tempo del cinema quanto quello della storia.

Fare l’agente immobiliare richiede un movi-mento incessante. Lida si sposta di casa in casa, di quartiere in quartiere. Il suo sguar-do sembra porsi al centro di una geometria insieme esattissima e mutante. Siamo in Cambogia, Phnom Penh. Da un lato le case a più livelli, la mappa cittadina pensata come una costellazione di vetri lampeg-gianti, il vortice altalenante delle strutture metropolitane, viste panoramiche e indagini felpate degli interni. Dall’altro un occhio li-quido, morbido, epidermico: carrellate sulla città dal finestrino dell’automobile, i riflessi traslucidi della notte, l’opacità del giorno, il sesso furtivo, il ripercuotersi astratto e indo-lente delle soap opera televisive, la sensazio-ne che tutto venga lentamente a mancare.

È il cinema atmosferico di Steve Chen, che in questa sua opera prima mostra una peculiare maturità nel creare un equilibrio

fra struttura narrativa e architettura filmi-ca. Non è facile individuare una materia resistente, il dato concreto che sintetizzi l’astrale affanno degli eventi di una vita. I sentimenti per esempio mutano di conti-nuo, mentre la memoria sembra saldarsi proprio nella sua complicata rete di abbagli e dimenticanze. Lida viene silenziosamente e lentamente inghiottita dalla vertigine del-lo sguardo interiore: la noia imprecisata, la fine di un amore, la voce fuori campo che diventa mormorio dell’anima, le canzoni appena sussurrate, le lacrime inevitabili.

Dream Land disegna una metafisica dell’abitare, dove anche le mura bianche e le vetrate sul mare di una casa bellissima producono abissi con cui bisogna imparare a convivere.

Dare I say that it’s impossible to fall for a film that sets the stage with an opening title card that reads: “1835. Ar-gentina. Anarchy. Plague.” As for the scene that follows? Well, let’s just say that you won’t be able to get it out of your head. Anchored by a sensational performance from Pablo Cedrón, Benjamín Naishtat’s sophomore feature, a thematic follow-up to his award-winning Berlin competition title History of Fear, is an exciting and daring evocation of the wild, free-for-all founda-tion of the Argentine state… with maybe a slight hint of Peckinpah lurking somewhere in the background. With a piercing gaze, Cedrón charts a mysterious, shadowy figure, a charismatic, power-mad (and possibly just plain mad) leader with but two dedicated younger fol-lowers, who traverses the Pampas trying to marshal resources for “El Movimiento,” a vaguely drawn politi-cal movement that promises to lead the country out of its dark times. (Dark is the operative word: most of the moody, monochromatic 1.33 film is shot at night with minimal light.)

One of the three features made for this year’s Jeonju Cinema Project, the aggressively edited El Movimiento shows how any filmmaker can, with limited means and time and complete artistic freedom, still produce a wholly unique cinematic universe. He’s made a gut-punch of a film that lives up to Hobbes’ characterization of the anarchic condition: nasty, brutal and short.

The Festival del film Locarno lasts only

eleven days, but there are many professionals involved

in the event who love to follow the evolution of the movies and

the directors who are taking part to one of its sections. One of the most

interested ones is certainly Alessandro Marcionni, head of the Pardi di domani sec-

tion since 2009. “In some way, the edition of the last year represents what the Festival is trying to

do in the last 25 years with this section: identifying young authors who can take advantage of our event as a springboard for their future careers”.

The list of talented directors met (and selected) in 2014 is long. “Martin Edralin’s short movie Hole has collected more than 40 selections to interna-tional festivals and about ten awards, including the Clermont-Ferrand festival Grand Prix. Similarly, Pi-otr Zlotorowicz’ Matka Ziemia, Masha Kondakova’s Lystopad and Mauro Carraro’s Aubade, among oth-ers, have been able to distinguish themselves world-wide after their Locarnese premieres”.

Working in the field of short movies means also to help directors to take confidence with cinema, sometimes driving them to the world of full-length films. “And we have been very happy – Marcionni says – to discover that two of the directors we se-lected the last year were able to direct their debut movies: Morgan Knibbe with Those Who Feel the Fire Burning which took part to the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and An-drew Cividino with Sleeping Giant, a project based and developed from the short movie presented in Locarno which was screened in Cannes for the Se-maine de la Critique section”.

Also this year, the hopes about the directors in-vited to the international and national selections are high. “In all the movies we selected – the head of the section admits – I can see a spirit, a common soul. They seem to feel the need to tell the reality around them, it does not matter whether it is con-nected to current events or their more intimate being. A trend which generated touching and hon-est movies, directed by young and brave directors – even if young”.

Moreover, the only Ticinese directors taking part to the Festival del film Locarno are registered in this section, yearning for the Pardino d’oro. “Yes, this year two Ticinese directors will present their short movies in our national contest. On the one hand Eleonora Marinoni (co-director with Elice Meng, from France) will introduce the animation movie D’ombres et d’ailes – a visually outstanding work. On the other hand, Caterina Mona will drive the au-dience along an intimate, dramatic and moving trip within her short movie Persi. We are sure they will represent the Canton of Ticino with pride, showing the world how much talent there is in our region and the attention paid by the Festival to it”.

Marcionni and his team have also the important task to motivate a bunch of young authors who are living their first experience in a big movie festival. “The participation to an event like ours is exciting for everybody – from the more unexperienced guys to the Hollywood directors. My advise is: take profit of this experience, you are not here only for present-ing your movie, but for finding a meeting, dialogue and exchange place and starting your future career in the world of cinema”.

Prendi un archetipo come Romeo e Giulietta e capottalo nella real-tà di un campo Rom. E quella che sembra solo una rilettura di un classico teatrale, scaraventata tra roulottes polverose, pneumatici, bambini e fuochi all’aperto, inizia a filtrare tra le maglie delle sue battute più celebri l’ossigeno scivoloso dell’attualità. Con tutte quel-le divisioni tra clan che innescate dalle semplici prove dello spetta-colo sembrano diventare ancor più marcate di quelle dei tempi di Shakespeare. Un gioco al raddoppio che il regista Massimo Coppola conduce usando l’escamotage documentaristico del film nel film. E così, fondale e soggetto si sovrappongono. Quanti film riescono a dar conto della vertigine del tempo? Non del tempo della narrazione, della messa in scena o del montaggio, ma quel tempo fatto di anni, epoche, secoli. Per farlo Massimo D’Anolfi e Martina Parenti hanno scelto un protagonista ideale: il marmo, frutto di millenni di stratificazioni, tanto duro da sfi-dare l’eternità. L’infinita fabbrica del Duomo sembra raccontare il viaggio e la storia di quelle pietre dalle montagne a Milano, dove hanno dato forma alla cat-tedrale cittadina con un lavoro di centinaia d’anni, che tuttora continua. Eppure tutto quello a cui assistiamo, i gesti dei manutentori, i movimenti delle macchine, l’apparire degli insetti, i rituali dei religiosi, il brulica-re dei turisti, tutto sembra essere l’accidentale interfe-renza occorsa mentre la camera era impegnata in un interminabile piano-sequenza il cui solo oggetto è la pietra. Unico coprotagonista possibile un albero, testi-mone longevo abbastanza da assistere alla trasforma-zione della montagna in gigantesca chiesa. Capace di incarnare lo sguardo eterno delle statue, ma vivo come legno, il film sembra volersi dare la stessa natura e missione di quell’olmo: crescere, aspettare, praticare il tempo, mentre si succedono papi e imperatori, si con-sumano i fregi, e la cattedrale non smette di trasfor-marsi in sé stessa.

Potremmo apertamente dichiarare che non esiste un italia-no, dal Dopoguerra ad oggi, che non abbia almeno una volta sentito la voce o visto il volto di Elio Pandolfi. La quantità, il volume dei lavori teatrali, radiofonici, televisivi e cinema-tografici di Pandolfi è tale da rendere quasi impraticabile una qualche forma di sintesi della sua carriera, e il lavoro di Caterina Taricano e Claudio de Pasqualis è difatti più una cavalcata attraverso il lavoro e i successi di un artista che ha attraversato la cultura popolare italiana.

Mescolando materiali d’archivio e ricordi diretti, A qual-cuno piacerà cerca di raccontare una meravigliosa carriera da affabulatore, da indefesso lavoratore pronto a leggere co-pioni davanti al microfono, partire in tournée verso la provin-cia – in quel momento d’oro della ormai fantomatica Rivista – doppiare una quantità enorme di film, e poi semplicemente proseguire, ad ogni mutazione dell’industria, rimanendo un working actor che non si è fatto mancare nulla.

Pandolfi piace a tutti

innamorati sfortunati; solo che in un lampo la realtà corre più ve-loce della finzione e la sorpassa sulla sua stessa corsia. Il bacio tabù porta alla luce i rancori tra le famiglie dei ragazzi rom e i vecchi con-ti in sospeso sembrano riaggiornare, in modo spiazzante, lo spartito d’odio e rivalità tra Capuleti e Montecchi. E se l’arrivo di un Valerio Mastandrea pare assolvere al ruolo di cerimoniere dello spettacolo, è in questa continua ripetizione differente che la storia d’amore più famosa del mondo riesce a trovare il suo più sbilanciato equilibrio: da una parte, assorbe a sé i racconti di una contemporaneità che arriva a toccare le guerre di terre vicine e lontane, dall’altra rompe i tendi-ni del tempo e per un momento lascia tutti nell’illusione sospesa di rivivere per l’ennesima volta il mito vietato dei due giovani amanti.

Tra i molti obiettivi di un Festival non può mancare il desiderio d’ispirare i giovani re-gisti e di sostenerli nella loro passione per il cinema. Per farlo al meglio, Locarno de-dica per la quinta volta una giornata alle realtà formative in ambito audiovisivo at-tive nella Svizzera italiana: il programma Scuole senza frontiere, che si svolgerà il 6 agosto, presenta i lavori degli studenti del CISA, della SUPSI e, ospite per la prima volta, dell’Accademia d’architettura di Mendrisio. A questi istituti attivi sul territorio elvetico si affianca, dall’Italia, il Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – «una delle più prestigio-se scuole al mondo», commenta Domenico Lucchini, direttore del CISA e coordinatore dell’evento.

È un programma, quello di Scuole sen-za frontiere, che nel corso delle edizioni è cresciuto avvalendosi di sempre nuove collaborazioni. «Due anni orsono – raccon-ta Lucchini – abbiamo ospitato la Scuola specializzata superiore d’arte applicata;

quest’anno l’Accademia, che presenterà dei brevi filmati scaturiti dal workshop Filmare l’architettura, con due tra i più sorprendenti cineasti europei: Ila Bêka e Louise Lemoine». Un’ottima occasione, dunque, per scoprire, attraverso i corti proposti, approcci didattici diversi al mondo del cinema.

Si inizia alle 10 al PalaVideo (l’entrata è libera) con i lavori degli studenti di SUPSI e CSC; alle 14 si passa ai filmati dei loro col-leghi del CISA e dell’Accademia d’architet-tura. «Per gli studenti è un’occasione per ve-rificare la bontà del proprio operato, sia con compagni, docenti e tutor, sia con il pubblico e gli “addetti ai lavori”». E, almeno per gli stu-denti del CISA, le possibilità formative non terminano con la proiezione: «i nostri allievi partecipano da protagonisti anche alla piat-taforma virtuale del Festival». Una locomotiva. E una ragazza che vi si getta sotto. Ma niente paura: nella favola rosso-crociata Hinter den sieben Gleisen le cose tendono ad andare per il meglio, e così Inge, emigrata tedesca incinta e disperata, trova rifugio nella stazione di Zurigo, dove tre bar-boni, inteneriti, decidono di vincere la loro avversione per il lavoro pur di aiutarla.

Per questi toni ottimistici il cineasta, re-gista teatrale e televisivo, docente e persino canzoniere svizzero Kurt Früh (1915-1979), i cui film riscossero grande successo tra la metà degli anni Cinquanta e l’inizio dei Sessanta, si era attirato le critiche dei polemici anni Set-tanta ed era stato lentamente dimenticato. Oggi invece si sottolinea come le sue opere, nonostante il tono da commedia, dipinges-sero un attento ritratto della Svizzera degli anni del boom economico; e così quest’anno, in occasione del centenario dalla nascita del cineasta, anche il Festival gli rende omaggio nell’ambito di Cinema svizzero riscoperto.

Due le pellicole, presentate in versioni re-staurate. La prima è Dällebach Kari, opera celebrata da critica e pubblico che racconta di un leggendario parrucchiere nella Berna del primo Novecento. La seconda è, appunto, Hinter den sieben Gleisen, opera predilet-ta del regista, che permette di sbirciare una Zurigo d’antan e dove si segnala la presen-za, nel ruolo del macchinista, di quell’Han-nes Schmidhauser che il Festival aveva già omaggiato nel 2012. E a riprova che il cinema di ieri si riperquote su quello di oggi, basti dire che tra gli allievi di Kurt Früh alla Kun-stgewerbeschule di Zurigo, dove insegnò tra 1967 e 1969, c’era anche Markus Imhoof, che nel 2012 fece volare Piazza Grande su ali d’a-pe con More Than Honey, film di chiusura di quell’edizione.

The glorious evening screenings in Piazza Grande here at Festival del film Locarno have always been a prestigious theater for both experimental and mainstream cinema. This year for example we could see in Piazza Grande the Signs of Life, a section dedicated to the most important and innovative movies, together with an ‘80 classic like The Untouchables, a screening which even today could give the audience more than a surprise…

In Brian De Palma’s career the 1987 gangster movie starred by Kevin Costner, Robert De Niro and Sean Connery and a newcom-er Andy Garcia – awarded at Locarno 2015 with the Leopard Club Award – is an essential step toward Hollywood and its mainstream rules: for the first time the genial director puts his vision into a nar-rative structure capable of rising over the genre in order to become something more. More than other previous De Palma cult movies like Phantom of the Paradise, Carrie or Blow Out, The Untouch-ables is in fact pure cinema, a powerful show which contains several legendary sequences like the opening one or the shooting scene at

the Chicago train station, which is much more than a simple hom-age to Ėjzenštejn: after almost thirty years in fact it still represents an unequalled, perfect match of editing, stunning cast performanc-es, hypnotic Ennio Morricone’s notes and Brian De Palma’s idea of cinema.

Why is The Untouchables a masterpiece totally incapable of aging? Because behind the shining surface such a great movie re-flects on themes like the sense of duty, the loyalty to ideals and the difference between law and morality. Through this opera Brian De Palma showed the mainstream industry that he wasn’t only an author for a small audience of geek movie lovers. With more than seventy-five millions earned only in U.S. and the Academy Award to Sean Connery as best supporting actor, The Untouchables con-firmed Brian De Palma as one of the most important directors in contemporary American cinema.
