22 BESTE FOTOBÜCHER

22 FAVORITE PHOTO BOOKS

2007/2008

entsprechende Form finden.

The photo book has long established itself as an independent photographic form of expres-

sion. It offers space for smaller or larger stories, for extensive studies and series. Through its layout and

configuration, it can find a form that suits its content. While prices for individual prints and editions

continue to reach exorbitant levels on the art market, the photo book remains a relatively affordable

and therefore democratic medium that enables us to get a very close experience of the artistic image.

Nowhere else can photo art be collected so inexpensively — even if individual photo book treasures are

only recognized as such once they are out of print or have become very costly. To celebrate the 4th Fo-

tofrühling Kassel under the heading “Foto:Buch”, the Kasseler Fotoforum has attempted to identify the

best photo books of the year 2007/08. We have invited international practitioners — critics, publicists and

curators as well as booksellers and collectors – to nominate a book which they personally consider to be

the most successful, most beautiful and most interesting of the previous year. It really surprised us that

this altogether obvious idea of a retrospective had not yet been picked up by the photo world. This volume

contains all the nominated books together with a personal statement by the entrants. As we had hoped,

it reflects all aspects of contemporary photography, ranging from the opulent picture book via experi-

mental book forms to the illustrated theory of photography. There are many and varied approaches to the

photographic image here, but all the selected books exhibit outstanding quality in content and form. We

are very happy that this project has spontaneously met with such an overwhelmingly positive response,

and we cordially thank all of the participants.

erhielt.

It is no secret that John Gossage is a close friend of mine, and I have collaborated with him

often on his publications. But I am pleased to nominate him in this instance, not out of friendship, but

because I think this is a beautifully realized, modest little artist’s book. And most importantly for a pho-

tobook — the pictures are superb. I have known his work well for many years, but this book nevertheless

surprised and delighted me when I received it.

A dark, lively book, which connects the natural catastrophe of Pompeii with man-made cata-

strophes of the 20th century. The very well designed book presents an exciting interchange of black+white

photographs by Eikoh Hosoe of the mentioned places, together with short quotations and texts.

It’s not an artist’s book but rather a book that considers the impact and effect of new photo-

graphic technologies in emergency and war situations. It is also much stronger and honest than many

pseudo-critical artistic statements published on Iraq these last years. I also like the very modest and

efficient design.

bereichern.

I believe this is a sensitive and moving project accomplished within the highest tradition of

the humanistic photo-essay. For more than 10 years, Gervasio Sánchez has documented the life of several

civilian victims severely wounded by forgotten mines. The book is a magnificent example of an efficient

communication platform conceived with clinical austerity to enhance the photographic discourse.

From time to time over a period of seven years (2000–2006) photographer Joakim Eskildsen

and his wife, the author Cia Rinne, joined the Roma in their journeys through Europe and India. The

result is a stunningly beautiful book combined with a well-informed text — an insight into the ways of the

biggest ethnic minority in Europe.

nische Revolution; als Künstler, der in seiner fotografischen Praxis eine Vielfalt von Methoden zulässt;

This monograph on the photographer Bahman Jalali, who was born in 1944 in Teheran, ac-

companies the retrospective mounted by the Tàpies Foundation. The book impressively combines Jalali’s

various roles: as an archivist of the history of his country with an emphasis on the Iran-Iraq war and the

Iranian revolution; as an artist whose photographic practice embraces a multitude of techniques; and

finally as a collector, a preserver of the cultural facts of his country. Rarely in recent years has the life-

work of a photographer shown me in such a touching way just what the intelligence, energy and political

clarity of an individual can do not only for the collective consciousness, for one’s own country, but also

for the “distant observer”, whose view is often distorted by the “informative” images that confront us on

a daily basis.

Beate Gütschow’s landscapes generate in the viewer, that is, in me, who for over 30 years

has regularly dealt with photographic imagery, an incredibly mysterious response. They are and remain

mysterious, even after one learns how they have been created. The artist starts the process with an empty

screen and constructs countless individual images to create a new work. The most beautiful exhibition of

the year at Berlin’s “Haus am Waldsee”. The large exhibition formats lose nothing of their impact in the

book format.

I think this first Leonard publication survey gives a comprehensive approach to her rich and

evocative work. Leonard is one of the most significant contemporary artists who push photography sur-

vey into a field of knowledge, exploring and inquiring our world values.

The juxtaposition of jungle images, whose green harbors all the colors of the cosmos, with

black-and-white body images out of whose silence all languages can be heard, points to the pure soul of

creation. The photographs by Nikolaus Korab are like a mirror of this soul and lead us directly to a deep

understanding. The highest possible goal that art can attain.

emotionalen Bild Belgiens.

The Belgian Stephan Vanfleteren is a widely traveled photographer. “Belgicum” focuses on his

home country — with rather bleak images that are far removed from the dazzling metropolises of Europe.

Despite its topicality, the brilliantly designed and printed book radiates a timelessness through its b/w

images, which never seem anachronistic. Portraits, cityscapes and details combine to form a highly emo-

tional portrait of Belgium.

„The Danube River Project“ genügt allen genannten Kriterien.

„The Danube River

A good photo book is more than just the sum of its good photos. A good photo book is the

visual statement of a confident author. It follows an idea, has a message, ties together a theme following

a clear concept. “The Danube River Project” fulfils all the above mentioned criteria. As a book it portrays

an engaging as well as spatio-temporal project that has to be imagined at a junction of geography and

ecology, history and presence, demarcation and opening: The Danube as a leitmotif for an intelligent

and explosive story in images, for which the author has created a formal aesthetic that surprises. ‘The

Danube River Project’ is not Andreas Müller-Pohle’s first book, but it might be his best so far. It is proof

of how the theorist and photographer is able to constantly reinvent himself.

All dies gelingt Klich mit seiner Kamera einzufangen.

For more than 40 years the Swedish photojournalist Kent Klich has had an unusual friendship

with a remarkable woman. Beth R has had a lifelong affair with heroin and all possible relationship and

family problems, yet she has had enough pride and something else — a combined toughness and delicacy

to keep her going — that Klich is somehow able to manifest with his camera. She is a survivor. This book

brings his earlier and most recent photographs together in creative counterpoint and presents Beth R’s

life journey through all phases of her addiction to heroin to her present happiness at 60 as a newly mar-

ried woman. Picture Imperfect is an especially heartfelt book about an unusual relationship between a

photographer and his subject.

A highly original phenomenological (anthropogenical, as the author would put it) INTEGRA-

TED treatment of photography that makes it possible to compare this book with Vilem Flusser’s work,

which was probably the last of its kind. “Essentialist” views on the medium are organically amalgamated

here with those of the “functionalist” ones, that is, to be honest, very rare. This book indicates that we

should take more care to translate books from other languages into English, indeed to enrich the so far

English-language dominated book world on the history and theory of photography.

Cuny Janssen zeigt Bilder aus Südafrika – imposante Felslandschaften neben trostlosen Vorortsiedlungen,

bunt blühende Kakteen neben ernst dreinblickenden Gesichtern … all dies hatten wir schon. Doch statt

„There is Something in the Air“ begeistert mich, weil

Cuny Janssen shows images of South Africa — impressive rocky landscapes next to desolate

suburban settlements, colorful flowering cacti next to frowning faces … all this we have seen before. But

instead of turning it into an airy cloud of pretty associations, this book virtually chops up its material.

The images run wild across the double pages, they repeat themselves, they anticipate and then refer

back: a challenging, an arduous syntax. “There is Something in the Air” excites me because it ads to its

genre a bold, fresh form of speech. Those who only flick through this book haven’t taken up its challenge;

it needs to be ingested, to be digested.

Stephen’s ongoing exploration of Hackney takes a new twist with this wonderful series of

photomontages. They comprise found photos together with pressed wild flowers, all found on the market

square that has now disappeared. Self published with his usual strong sense of design, it is another great

book from this essential British photographer.

Danny Lyons „Like a Thief’s Dream“ ist die spannende Geschichte seiner Be-

in Texas arbeitete, woraus das Buch „Conversations with the Dead“ resultierte) und Rentons Komplize,

Dinker Cassel.

My nomination for the best contemporary photo book of the year is not even a photography

book, per se, though it is illustrated with photographs. Danny Lyon’s “Like a Thief’s Dream” is the rive-

ting story of his relationship with two convicted murderers, James Ray Renton — first encountered when

Lyon was doing his work in the Texas prison system, which culminated in his book “Conversations with

the Dead” — and Renton’s accomplice, Dinker Cassel, as well as an unflinching portrayal of prison life in

the 1980s and 1990s. This book offers extraordinary insights into the mind and methods of one of our

This fascinating and troubling book describes the macho domination of Nigerian males over

extraordinarily powerful African animals. Pieter Hugo couldn’t have captured the African male bravado

in any better way. His simple technique of rendering the background of his pictures monochromatically,

while muting the colors of the portraits themselves, produces a work that has the subtlety of fine portrait

painting, while revealing a realistic, documentary yet entertaining view of the African street performer

trade. The book itself, through its straightforward design, lets the work speak for itself without getting in

the way.

etwas erahnen, was man gemeinhin Aura nennt.

How do we know if a book is outstanding? After the unwrapping follows a strangely sensual

moment. A quarter of a minute later, even while quickly flicking through the book, one can sense what

is commonly called aura. An increased pulse rate signals that this book definitely has to be obtained. In

the case of “Soul and Soul” by Kiyoshi Suzuki, who passed away in Tokyo in the year 2000, it is initially

the cover, the binding, the paper and the print, the individual elements of the book, which immediately

attract interest through their delicate interplay. The images of “Soul and Soul” are somehow fragile and

deeply personal. The team at Noorderlicht took care to print the pictured designs on soft paper using a

deep black tonal range to achieve the highest possible authenticity. A superb book.

It is a book entirely compiled by Franco Vaccari, one of the most important contemporary

Italian artists who, since the late Sixties, has chosen photography as a tool of art, and the major Italian

theorist of photography (the best known book written by Vaccari is “Fotografia e inconscio tecnologico”

— “Photography and technological unconsciousness”). The pictures include both his works from the late

Sixties up to now and his artist-books. The layout is deliberately very simple, black-and-white and color

interlace, concentrating on the essentials.

was eine ungeheure Sammelwut begründete.

Peter Pillers job in a media agency was to thumb through regional newspapers with wonderful

titles such as “Allgemeine Zeitung der Lüneburger Heide” or “Hinterländer Anzeiger”. Searching for ad-

vertisements he discovered the meaningful banality of documentary photos in local rags that instigated

an enormous collecting frenzy. After numerous single volumes a cross section of his archives has now

been published. “Zeitung” is a mighty omnibus of nearly 1.600 photos, categorized with titles such as “In

Löcher gucken”, “Rekordernte” or “Autos berühren”. A photo book that reads like a novel.

schen abgehandelt. Bemerkenswert.

I find this publication interesting because it appears to have only found a temporary form

— a cleverly constructed artistic hybrid between imperfect book (binding!) and ephemeral magazine.

Furthermore, the authors have dealt with a number of complex contemporary themes (China, poverty,

large cities, resources, environment, globalization), using the example of the profane treatment of empty

plastic bottles. Remarkable.

To begin with, SilberLicht is an artistic examination of traditional photographic technology.

Amin El Dib arranged exposed Baryt paper into still-lifes and photographed them. Torn paper edges and

reflexes of the richly contrasting lighting reveal the pure materiality of the traditional photo paper. The

deepest black usually underlies this, which bestows on the still-lifes a fascinating depth, reminiscent of

the view from a foreign planet into the expanse of the universe. But it is certainly not just a matter of tech-

nique. The motifs on the photo paper fragments are sometimes more, sometimes less easily deciphered.

Visible are skin surfaces. The human being is fragmented, torn into pieces, his image re-arranged and

presented through fine aesthetics: This is how a photo book with the potential to become a future classic

can look, thanks to a tight interlacing of form and content.
